QUESTION TIME!

So Boo Boo's is about fully grown, he just has some filling out to do.. Well, he's extremely hyper....It's taken me over ten minutes to write this much.... He's constantly jumping at my face or on my hands..tries to hump my hands a lot as well, and bolting across my room... this goes on for hours and doesn't seem to end... is he ever going to calm down...or is this him? I feel like I need to sit in the living room to get things done...because he free roams my room...(hates to sit in his cage...) He is like a cat or dog, free roaming.. just my room tho.. So, that's that... is it just because he's young? Or is he just...this hyper?

I try to play as often as possible...and he's outside the cage 18 hours a day.... My face is getting cut up ahaha...Should I force him to spend more time in his cage?

LOLOLOL.....its because he is a red squirrel. Like a little fuzzy bottle rocket right?? What you are seeing right now is calm.....give him a month and he will be shooting out of all places and leaving vapor trails behind. Now times this by 5 and you will get a glimpse of the goings on in my house.

You can do it!!! Your skin will toughen up....and your heart will become softer. I think thats whys red squirrels are the cutest....its their defense!
Just wear long sleeves and jeans....and yes...he can spend more time in his cage as long as its good size.

Is there ANYTHING I can do to calm him... in ANY way.... He bites my eyelids... tries to climb my face... I'm all scratched up everywhere... I can't type for more than a second before he jumps on my hand... I have to throw him under a blanket to type a word... Ah... how I can't help but love him regardless of this...

It's a large cage...guinea pig sized...connected by a tube to a tinier cage that he was in when he was younger....-__-''' I'm dying.

Im not going to lie to you....its not going to get better. He does have the ability to learn though....so when he is being too rough there is nothing wrong with a little time out. Put him back in the cage until he calms down a bit.
These little reds are just sooooo active.....soon he will start launching onto your face from a distance greater than 5 feet. Now THAT hurts!

Oh goodness... Well, I know he's smart... I'll play the "upset" squirrel sound and put him in his cage... He seems to really pay attention to the sounds I play...maybe that'll help. I love the little booger to death. No matter what, he's easier than a child... I'd prefer him than a real baby haha.

I raised two reds together when I was in high school. They had a large cage but when I was home or family was home, they just had free run of my room. You'd think having so much room to roam and the two of them playing 99% of the day together would wear them out. WRONG! Reds are just CRAZY! With greys, they will snuggle, play, tire out, play, relax. I cannot think of a time with our two reds that they ever calmed down. We were not even caretakers to them, we were just TREES for them to climb. They'd just chase each other in circles around us, totally disregarding that we have FACES that don't need to be scratched up!!

I attached a photo of one of the reds....on my head. Trying to get a pic but obviously, they wouldn't sit still. So I got one of them in mid jump to get the camera! Ignore my "I'm cooler than everyone" 15 year old mug :D

Aww haha, that's sweet. I wish I had a grey squirrel as well, I'd get the calmness and the hype...and maybe they'd play TOGETHER and not in my face... or more or less, MORE together LESS in my face ;)

PS. Eye scratches? Nope! That's why I had my sunglasses on!!! Also, after we released them, when winter came around, I went to grab my coat out of my closet. Put it on, put my hands in the pockets and pulled out piles of walnuts and poop hhahahah. A cool little side note, they would climb inside an acoustic guitar....and when we released them I would play it on my porch and they would come! This went on for a few weeks til they took off for good. It was neat :)

I can't, at work and no speakers on this computer....I'm sure someone else here has sound! Squirrels can make a whole lot of weird sounds. My last release would do this strange pause and then long squeek that would fade out. Almost like a warning alarm. I'm sure the noise is normal...I'd wait til someone else responds though!

I'm just hoping he didn't eat something in my room that he shouldn't of... which is whats causing the sound, possibly.

Thank you! Yes he is a bit difficult, but I love him to pieces... Even his chirp-farting...

When he gets too rough I play an "upset pine squirrel" sound and he calms down.... he actually looked ready to sleep... Not sure if this is a perfect training method, but it's helped... I'm trying to make it seem like I'm mad at him when he does certain actions... if anyone has a better sound clip for me to use, i'd be grateful. This is what I've been using-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1f5GLrJLCA

This sounds more territorial...but Boo Boo's and I share this space so I don't want him feeling like he can't... What do you guys think?

Hey BooBoo,
I was wondering where on the internet you could play the squirrel sounds??
Thanks!

Aw, he's just fussing and talking. The little reds that come to my feeders b*tch me out like this all the time. The little reds are VERY vocal, and once they get going they don't shut up! Hunters up here hate them because they will sit and call warning for HOURS after spotting a hunter in a blind :D :thumbsup

LOL, Thanks Ghostie, How is Boo Boo doing? I have a grey, his name is Shades, I thought maybe you found a website that plays squirrel sounds and tells you what each of them mean. That would be awesome! I havent found anything like that. Maybe if someone else has they could let us know.

Thanks

:wave123 Hi Ghostie
I think you need a bigger cage if you are going to leave your little Red in side of the cage for any amount of time. Do you have a Stealth Wheel? All the Flyer people use them. The cages liked the best is the small wier Parrot type cage. Hear are a few to see.
Have you looked at Cages, nestboxes, suppliers, materials and ideas... Take a look at Critter Nation for $115 by skylavaulter.

Henry's Pets sells a large cage for about $150.
