You came to the right place.
It may take a bit before someone in your area shows up, so please be patient.

I emailed Rygel1hart, who is in north central Arkansas, to see if she can help since she is closest. I haven't heard back yet but I am certain if she can help she will.

Fingers crossed for this baby. Meanwhile Zack ... continue the care you are giving. TSB is working on a solution.

I can take him but the problem is you are at the bottom of the state and I am at the top, almost to the Missouri line. I wouldnt be able to do anything for you til Tuesday as I work the next two days til 4:00 pm. Here is the link to rehabilitators in Arkansas so that you might be able to find someone closer and sooner. http://www.agfc.com/species/Documents/rehabilitators_by_county.pdf If nobody can help you I am the one listed for Marion county so you can get my phone number from it to see what we can do to help get this guy to me or someone on the list. Good luck and please keep us posted or call me tonight after 4:30 pm. Stacey

With a torn rotator cuff, will most rehabbers PTS?:dono

rygel1hardt
08-28-2011, 07:11 PM
Well I cant speak for other rehabbers. I can say they got into rehabbing to help animals, as it surely wasnt for the money. As we have seen time and time again baby squirrels have amazing healing capabilities so given time who knows what the outcome may be for this little squirrel. Any good rehabber is going to give this little guy time to possibly heal. Stacey

I posted on your other thread in the non emergency section...also tried to PM you but it wont work. Anyway, I am in Western Arkansas(Fort Smith), I am currently doing a 6 week old as is my mentor...I also have a non releasable juvenile from this years first season. My mentor is good about being able to drive most anywhere after she gets away from work so I'm sure transport can be arranged. If you still need help with baby call or text at 479-806-6246...I manage a small animal practice and may not always be able to answer but WILL call you back as soon as I can. If you can text all the better because I can usually answer.

Is it a 4 hour one way trip or 4 hours both ways? So, at the most, to save this one, someone needs to drive a full day. Is that correct? I will chip in for gas money......"trains" are almost non-existant these days on TSB.

would it help if we tried to break up the trip in legs...
like say...getting the sq to a friend in Pine Bluff as a start...
and then looking for a ride to LR etc...
can you both call peeps and see what you can do like that...
Michael, do you know anyone ANYONE in PB?....
or anyone willing to drive to PB...
If you can get the sq to PB, I may have a way to get him to LR
{my wicked crazy lunatic southern baptist over educated, non critter oriented aunt}...
thinking she MAY drive him to LR...Dipty Dan would that help you?
can you get to LR?
let me know...my aunt may drive that far...it's all I got {a small hope and a prayer}

Ill check my end.

Sorry it has taken me so long...Ive been trying to find out all day WHEN a ride was coming from LR to here and JUST now heard it will be first thing tomorrow morning....so basically...there is not enough time to even get him TO LR before then. I was hoping it would work out where he could get to LR, then ride with the pinkies from LR to here but it isn't in the stars. Back to square one I suppose....Michael??? How is baby??? If eventually we CAN get him to LR, I'm pretty sure the rehabber there could even overnight him a day or two before he got here..I think she's too full do do anthing longterm or he could just stay there..I think the hardest part will be getting TO LR.

Does anyone know what I should do for that knot under his arm ??

grinn75
09-01-2011, 04:50 PM
I think somebody before mentioned an abscess. Is that the knot you are referring to?

grinn75
09-01-2011, 05:06 PM
Oh I see it now. I thought that was your finger! It's huge. Could be swollen lymph node if not an abscess. Definitely need antibiotics either way. If no antibiotics then good food, fox valley or comparable formula, heat, and immune boosters and probiotics.
For the lump a warm compress can help bring down swelling just make sure it is not too warm, don't want to burn the skin.
Poor baby looks to be in rough shape from the pics. Hope we are able to get him to a rehabber soon.

DipityDane
09-01-2011, 05:06 PM
It kinda doesnt look like an abscess but so hard to tell in the pic.....it looks as tho that limb is atrophied...I wonder if during the dog attack there was a laceration and perhaps a foriegn body like dirt...gravel...grass...etc could have gotten trapped and is causing an inflammatory type response?

grinn75

Yes that back leg does not look good. DD are you contact with michael? Can he get antibiotics and is this baby on a good diet?

zack62001
09-01-2011, 07:47 PM
He does not have full use of his back legs i don't think , what i mean is he can use his back legs to crawl around OK but he kinda acts a little slow not in speed in the head , Then again aren't we all sometimes . It kinda looks like some of his hair is coming off on his back feet on the inside

DipityDane
09-01-2011, 07:51 PM
Hmmm well....he may be a bit behind in development....he looks a bit undernourished in the pics which may be because of his rough start....his lump....etc. What formula are you feeding?

zack62001
09-01-2011, 09:34 PM
Its a puppy Milk replace esbilac not sure if thats spelled right . I have been feeding him at least every 4 hours

grinn75
09-01-2011, 09:52 PM
Should be on fox valley or similar product. Much more complete nutrition for squirrels. Esbilac doesn't seem to absorb as well and can give them diarrhea. It can be ordered from either of the sites below. If you can't order on-line there may be somebody on here that can send you some until you can get him to a rehabber. Get the 20/50 formula.

Are you feeding with a syringe? And how much are you feeding each time?

4 per feeding every 4 hours , 1mL size

Where is the nearest person with access to a great vet that can help?

DipityDane
09-01-2011, 10:38 PM
Michael...no one is sure it IS an abscess right now, it's hard, at least for me, to say just by the pic....antibiotics would be good regardless if you can get some from your vet? I'm so sorry it's so hard getting him here. I just don't know anyone that far south who has means to bring him...actually...I don't know anyone down there. If he can get to Little Rock...or esp Hot Springs....it would help a lot. It just isn't working out.

Sorry not sure if you saw my previous post. Other than antibiotics like dipity Dane said a warm compress may help with pain and swelling. I sure wish there was something I could do. Jackie in Tampa has a relative in Arkansas. She will call her to see if she can transport. Bit of a longshot but we'll see.

Anyone else willing to drive? Gas money will be provided.

This baby has had his arm almost wrenched from his body. That swelling is probably lymph fluid. He must be suffering horribly.

perhaps, the members who live close to Arkansas should be contacted in person both, through e-mail and private message.

We understand Michael.....you are doing great caring for baby while we try.....dont hesitatr also to give him a feeding of rehydrating solution if you feel he needs it here and there....dehydrated babies cannot digest properly and some times its hard for injured or sick babes to not get too dry.

I am Irrel's (found out yesterday it's Irrelean's) foster mama. I so appreciate you meeting us to get her, and I pray she makes it, she's had a hard life so far. (born disabled, falling or being pushed out of a nest, in a dog's mouth, broken arm, infection). No one in our area does this kind of thing from what I've found. I'm so glad we found someone who could get her some medical attention or at least ease her pain. My car is hopefully fixed now and although I teach school full time if there is ever a need for transporting a baby half way or caring for one until help can get to him, I would be willing to help you save these babies all I can.
