The "Navy Hymn", one of my favorites:

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy Word,
Who walked on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and power!
Our family shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect us wheresoever we go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

IR, I hope you and your babies are evacuating, maybe to Milo's Mom's place. (Nice of me to volunteer her though, isn't it?) Apparently this storm could be lethal to thousands. I have no babies inside, but my wild guys have them out there in the yard somewhere, not to mention their own little selves. I am worried, but if it is a cat 1, I think we will be alright here because we are about 5 miles inland from a protected harbor.

Yes it is nice of you!! :rotfl Thank you for doing it though!!! I was thinking it and trying to determine if I should post it or simply call IR...

Okay, I'm gonna call her now. EDIT: DONE!!

We are supposed to have some heavy wind and some (A LOT) of rain and some more wind and A LOT more rain, but in comparison to others...I'll be having a day at the beach as long as none of the trees come down...

I think they are saying that the storm surge is supposed to be 11-15, maybe 20 feet...how protected is the harbor? 5 miles inland...this monster is nearly 500 miles wide!

Hopefully this dies down some before it hits our way Milo's Mom! Let me know if you need any help - I know I'm new to this, but more than willing to help in any way I can. Since we're not too far from each other, keep me in mind :thumbsup !

I'm already being forced to evac.. :shakehead

I know on many occasions, people had to evac without their pets... I guarantee everyone here, if I was ever "forced" to evac, it would be with me AND my pets, or not at all... I'd stay with them till the end if I had to, even if I had the chance to survive... if they couldn't, neither would I. It's just terrible. Our pets are just as important, maybe more so, than us humans. :Love_Icon

Hurricane's lose strength when they encounter land. Land acts like a brake. We are 50 feet above sea level and 5 miles inland where I am. The harbor is surrounded by land masses, not just storm jetties or sandy barrier islands. Also, I am on the third floor, so that gives me another 25 feet above the flood water.

We've got lots of big ol' trees around here, though.

Me and the menagerie are staying put unless forced to leave or this thing grows bigger. I'm on the Seaport in NJ across from SI and Bayonne. I'm more worried about the roof blowing off this old place then flooding.
I know there will be a lot of needy animals after this so count us in for helping if needed. We will take any Sqs, and any small wildlife including birds needing help as long as we have the room, up to 2 opossums ( unless babies we can take some more until we can get them elsewhere). I don't have the housing for coons unless babies either. Just in case there is no electricity Please text me me instead of calling. Island rehabber, Nancy in NY, and Jackie in Tampa have my new #.
To all my tri-state friends stay safe !!

Thank you. I think the hardest and scariest thing is ieven with all they are saying no one can know for sure what will happen in there particular area. The wind scares me the most, although the ocean is no joke either (although we are a bit away from it). We are all praying everyone will be safe...and hopefully not too much damage!

I'm really hoping everyone stays safe, especially our pets and the babies we are taking care of. I'm so worried about everyone located below (I'm up here in Maine). I know everyone here will take care of any animals, babies or adults, in need once the storm has blown over. I hope everyones outside babies are okay, Squirrels are extremely smart, so I don't doubt that they'll be okay, but my thoughts are still with them. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

:thankyou Praying we all weather this storm! I really don't know what to expect here, the river is already high and over the banks at some points with all the rains we've been having. Flooding is a given for many homes, power outage is definitely expected. More concerned with the wildlife, the forest floor is a marsh land in a lot of areas already. I just pray the "homed" trees can stay upright and intact as well as the towering trees most of us have over our homes on the island.

:grouphug Safe from this storm, I will be praying for the safety of all in Irene's path of destruction, both human and creatures. May the damage be less than expected and the storm and resulting weather not linger. (I have a friend who lives on one of the islands off the NC coast. She and her family had reservations to leave on the ferry this afternoon.) Blessings for all.:grouphug

I'm on the MA/NH border about 20 min from the seacoast. Hurricanes are hard because the forecast for a specific area can change all the time...my boss is calling me trying to decide if we should stay open on Sunday....trust me, I don't think people will be too bummed that they can't come paint pottery during a hurricane!

Good vibes and thoughts to everyone! Now, I can't overwinter but I sure can take in babies and get them warm, fed and stable until I can hand them off to more equipped hands.

I have outdoor squirrels that I have been feeding for years and some live in a hole in the tree by my house and I'm not sure where the others go... I am so worried about them with this hurricane... Are they able to make it????

SammysMom
08-26-2011, 09:07 PM
The outdoor guys are so well equipped by Mother Nature that they will be fine. I am worried about mine too, but they really are so smart that we should trust their instincts. Here in Connecticut we are bracing too, but it seems surreal at this point. I am pretty close to being on Long Island Sound but hopefully up high enough to be out of flooding worries. Prayers to all others who are worrying right now and a reminder that "this too shall pass".:grouphug

The rain is here....in very large buckets, I might add! I got Bean and Frankie back in just in time before it started. Once this passes, they will go back outside and will be released in a few days (as long as we got good weather and we don't have a mess out in back....have to make sure they will be safe.) They are SO HAPPY to be back in.....rubbing on all the fleece, pancaking on everything! lol Dear Lord, please keep my four craziaks safe...

I'm keeping all my TSB friends in my thoughts and prayers. I have a sister in Suffolk, VA and one in Keyport, NJ that I am worried about. We have been texting back and forth and during one of those exchanges, I told them how, after the storm is over, to look for injured wildlife or downed nests. My husband got on to me cause I forgot to tell them to watch for downed power lines! Anyhow, you all are in my constant thoughts this weekend.

Jesus My Lord, Saint Medard served as a bishop during very difficult times, and his long life of spiritual leadership created a tremendous impression on the people. Because of his patronage against bad weather, I ask him to intercede for me during the storms of my life as well as the storms in nature. Protect me and my home. And Lord, help the victims of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Send in more helpers and multiply the supplies that are needed for their aid. You calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee; deliver us from the storms that are raging around us now. Saint Medard, pray for us. Amen.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want;
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.

TSB, Paul and I could use your wonderful prayers and energies between now and 2pm EST.....the storm surges are expected starting from around noon and the tide is already SO HIGH....we fear the added water level will lift our marina right off its pilings, reducing it to rubble. Not being a drama queen here -- this COULD very well happen under present conditions. Although my insurance is paid, that's not the point.....it's our life's work and our boats are here, too.....I don't want to lose everything. :(

Hey Guys UDoWhat needs some of our awesome prayers!!
She lost power around 3am and the generator died around 5am. She is making due right now. She has some alternative heat sources for the babies she has, she also is able to heat water for formula. BUT, she has a well so whatever whatever she was able to collect before the generator died is all she's got...no electric...means the pump for the well is out too. She does have some bottled water too, but not a whole lot.
Her hubby is working on the generator trying to get it working again.
She needs our prayers! Her phone is ringing with baby calls too...

Prayers going out that generator will be fixed asap! Been w/o power since about 9"30 am, but it just came back on...whether it will stay on, who knows. Raining quite a bit, lost some branches, but all trees so far seem to be hanging tough (although doing quite a bit of dancing!) Everyone please stay safe! And so glad to see IR is ok! was so worried with where she is with what was coming at her. I know it isn't over, but I 'think' we dodged a very large bullet!!!!

We hardly got anything! Very surprising - I've seen worse winds in a thunderstorm :dono . Lots of hype for this hurricane but it jumped right over our immediate area - I'm glad the babies around here *should* be ok. We didn't even lose power, and we lose that for evvvvvverything :shakehead !

Thank you all for your prayers. We have been sheltered by God's mercy from anything awful here in Brookline. Thank you Lord! All praise to You!

There are a few big branches down, but otherwise no reports of any tragedies. My backyard guys were here this evening, minus Jimmy again, darn! Every time he does this I get so anxious! Then when he shows up, I'm like a big goofy puppy, I',m so happy to see him. Please everyone, pray that my Jimmykins is OK.

I will note that there is an ailing tree out front that lost two BIG branches in the last six months. But it came through fine, and a drey in its branches rode through OK too. I'm hoping that means everyone out there is OK. I know we have at least three litters somewhere in the neighborhood: Fatty Mama, Baby Pie, and Bandi (Bandita). One of them is in one of my nest boxes, but they are determined that I'll be the last to know whose it is!

:wave123 Finally got power back this morning, we did o.k. with no serious damage. No real flooding on the island but a lot of tree damage and trees uprooted, many were still falling Sunday and Monday. Been out on searches, checked all downed trees I came across, listened for cries. So far so good, all the drays I know about were still intact save one but the area was empty. My "regulars" have all been back around.
I've always been a hard core camper so weathering the storm was no big thing but house "camping" is not nearly as much fun. :shakehead Hardest part was trying to keep my 150 gallon aquarium babies (19) alive without power. I had to hand pump air, rotate and heat water and lose a lot of sleep... Still wound up losing two huge Parrot fish. I'm exhausted but headed out again for a woods search...

We were fine here in Southern NH. Lost a few trees, specifically the tree we had a pulley with a food basket for our releases tied up in.... Time to find a new tree for that! Generally did not get hit hard at all, loud winds and on and off rain. We did lose power but only for the day. Lost power around 10am Sunday. Stayed at my parents, who had power, and by Monday we had it back in Sandown.

Hope everyone is doing alright!

Just got back from California late last night.
We are so fortunate here, because some of our surrounding communities are just devastated.
We lost power, our basement flooded, and a tree fell into our pool area.
My son in law came and cut the tree and had the heavy pieces removed before we got home...Now how lucky am I?
