View Full Version : Think he's got pneumonia!!

I have been licensed to rehab many years in NC.STARTED WITH AN ORGANIZATION, AND HAD ACCESS TO ALL i NEEDED. THEN went into equine rescue, and was away from itfor several years . I've accepted a baby squirrel, apx. 4 weeks old. I have had him for one week, and today, think he may have pneumonia, and I have no antibiotic to give him. Need quickly!! Any ideas? He is weak, "clicking", and won't eat. Been on a regement of Esbilac, which has been successful the past. Help me help him please!

I will PM our NC rehabbers to see if anyone can help you with meds -- in the meantime is there any way you can get hold of human ABX like Cipro? You'll eventually want to get him off the Esbilac, too -- it has changed and is no longer recommended for wildlife. We all use the Fox Valley Day One products for squirrels, www.foxvalleynutrition.com.

I will gladly switch formula. Is Cipro over the counter?
I can't do anything until tomorrow. He is very weak, and I'm very nervous.

No Cipro is the brand name of an antibiotic [for humans]. All antibiotics are prescription. Go and look for any leftover antibiotics you or a family member or any friend might have. Even pet antibiotics. Someone here will help you dose it but you must makes these calls and look now. His life depends on it.

If all else fails, I will try to seek out a vet tomorrow, early as I can, that can work with this little fella.
I hate to hear the baby cry like he is doing every so often.
Should I try to feed him, or hydrate before then? I gave apx 2.5cc pedialite in 3 hrs.

Another success story so far! Petnzoo let me bring little Peanut home with me so he would have some siblings. He's doing great so far and is already eating like a little piggie. Pics to come later.
