View Full Version : Picking up baby squirrel...

Someone I am friends with on facebook (haven't seen since I was 12 lol!) posted this picture of a squirrel and said it had been wandering around his job site all day and kept going on the road. He decided to take it home, and I saw the post and of course said I am good with squirrels. Not sure where the job site is, or how long he has been out of the nest....but can anyone give me a rough idea of how old he is? I still have the FV formaula for squirrels 4 weeks and up (20/50 I believe) and have the boyfriend out getting pedialite.

I'm excited but also trying to decide if we can raise him/her here and overwinter (since fall is already creeping in here in New England) or to find another place. Well, mostly the boyfriend needs to decide if we can overwinter obviously I think we can! ;)

Age identification would be great! Picking the bub up as soon as I am out of work.

Between 5 and 6 weeks I think. Aw. I am glad he is getting the help he needs, poor little bug.

The guy said he took him home because he wouldnt be there again, that is when the siders come in to work on the house and shingles would be falling all over the place and he didnt want it to get hurt. Cute :) I'm very excited!

So the little man is asleep in my built in bra (I'm thinking these were invented specifically for this reason!) and besides fleas and being a bit cold, this guy looks good all over! The last squir I had destroyed my syringes/they all got stuck, so we are waiting on those to rehydrate with pedialyte/waiting for him to warm up. Can't wait to show pictures!

Is there a favorite flea remedy? Or will most pet store 'flea and tick' 'flea and mite' spray for kittens/small animals work?

I know nada about fleas but oh my gosh - that is one adorable baby! :Love_Icon :Love_Icon You are so lucky on two accounts - fall weather? Really??? And an adorable baby to overwinter cause you know, you have to keep him til the spring.......it's a TSB rule.:poke

A small drop or two of baby shampoo in slightly warmer than normal water.
Rinse a couple times with equally warm clear water.
A gentle bath followed by a nice soft cloth dry.
Brush gently with a toothbrush.
Preferably somebody elses.

He's flea free, dubbed him Max. Rehydrated and moved on to diluted formula, now regular FV. He LOVES it. Doesn't quite know what to do with eating, seems to think it is best to put formula on his hands, ignore the syringe, and lick his hands. He has peed one small pee and one BIG pee...no poop? Although he had a piece of crusty poo stuck..ew.

I am trying to convince the boyfriend we can overwinter him but he works on an on-call schedule and it is quite hectic....lots of going between my house and his house which is 30 min one way...I work a crazy schedule, too. I guess we're suited more for SPRING babies...Luckily, we have two options.

Our vet rehabs, but I am curious if she will try to release before winter (which I am not okay with) or keep him through winter....I know she is crazy busy with her actual patients so I feel like she wouldnt have time...

The other option is our good friend Doc. He is my mother's friend and has actually raised squirrels alongside with us since I was 15. I know he has done multiple reds and flyers, but not sure on greys. I figured I could give him Max along with the bag of FV formula I have and he would be in SUCH good hands. And since I know him personally, I feel more comfortable with this option. Although neither actually appeal to me, I've already fallen in love. What do you guys think?

(As you can see...Max, although young and wobbly and generally unimpressed with me so far, LOVES armpit scratches already!)

I will ask my mum if she has already contacted Doc. They may have already set up a time to do a pick Max up today...but just in case anything seems to not be working out..I am in Southern NH, about 30-40 min from Boston on the MA border!

And yes, pictures! I brought my nice camera with me to take photos! Soon! :D

I'm still waiting to hear from my mum, I believe she is at the gym so no phone. I'm not sure if our friend has any squirrels currently or not (hope he does!), or if they've already planned a meet up. If they have, it might be out of my hands and up to my mum and Doc to talk about changing plans :/ We will see what happens, Max would fit nicely with Pappy but I would not be worried if he was raised with Doc, even as a single squir, I have seen his success stories as well. I'm very lucky to have all the choices I have! Phew, I was getting worried it would be straight to the vet with no updates and uncertainty!

As long as he is safe, that is the important thing! (And with this storm looking like it is heading straight for us.....I will be walking the woods after. I just pray the four craziaks hunker down (or come in....they can come right into my bathroom if need be right off the bulkhead roof!)

Yes, and he will be safe! I so wish he could stay with me, but I'm happy to know that either way he'll be going somewhere awesome! Oh no! A storm?! I am out of the loop! Jeez, I didn't know we were expecting one! Am I totally living under a rock or what!

Quite the trek! I'm closer to the seacoast! But I think if I get a negative from our friend, then Pappy and I will work out a plan! I'll keep you in mind just in case! Thank you!

Hi LittleBecky :wave123
If you have some Dog or Cat Revolution Flea Control? Just put 2 drops on the Skin, between the shoulders, just below the head.
Hold him for a few to let it dry. :thumbsup3 That will take care of the Fleas and any Mites he might have picked up.
Boy! Oh Boy! I am in Love! :Love_Icon What a Sweet, Lucky, Little Angel you have their. Wish I Lived closer. :D

PS
Tell your Friend on FaceBook Thankyou for caring so much.:thankyou

I couldn't thank the guy enough, he didnt strike me as the type to help a critter out. On a job site while he was busy, too! He's so amazing, totally his own squirrel...eating very, very well and just making me so happy :)

I am VERY happy to say that Pappy and I arranging a pick up. Sweet lil Max will be SO happy to be with such great people and in a great environment :)

Who knows, come springtime, maybe I'll get that spring baby(or babies?!). That I can do!

He's snuggling in my shirt right now. He's THAT squirrel who isn't content in the shirt but wants to wiggle into your armpit haha oh Max!

I'm very excited about where Max is going and who he is going with. He will have such a great life!

This hurricane, ugh! I'm hoping it's not going to be as bad as they say (that is, unless they close my work! Then I'd be stoked!) but I have a release who was coming back regularly until the first week of august...I hope all the squirs will be okay out there!

Good morning! Yes, I have moy four out there, (plus previous releases, inc. the possies), so I am very concerned for them.
