View Full Version : Making noises when hungry!?

I have read that little clicking noises that the squirrel makes is a sign of sickness but he looks and acts completely healthy. It's just, whenever he is hungry he makes a sucking or clicking noise. Is this normal? He stops once he is fed and continues with it's soundless routine.

:wave123 :Welcome LL, It sounds like this just maybe "normal" sounds. Put the baby's chest up to your ear and listen to hear any clicking in his chest. If no sounds, then it most likely is just baby sounds. This sounds like a tiny baby. What is his story? He will need some special attention. I am in Maryland too. If you need help, please let me know. What formula is he on?? How much does he weigh? Babies need to be stimulated to pee and poo. They can not pee on their own. BTW, I am in Howard County. Glad you found TSB .

Yesterday, I saved this little guy from my nasty cat. He was squealing and making a lot of noise so we got my cat off of him. He was bleeding a little but after washing him, he seemed to get better. He's very active and healthy looking. As I said before, I am guessing he's around 1-2 weeks old.

He makes that noise whenever he's in my hands, he starts sucking on me. It sounds sorta like that popping or clicking noise people make when they have a sinus infection (lol, not sure if you know what i am talking about) so I am wondering if I should worry about it. I am pretty sure it's coming from his nose or mouth... or perhaps his throat.

We went out and bought him some Esbilac for puppies and he liked that a lot more then water. I only fed him a little though because i don't know exactly how much to feed him and I am scared to feed him too much. his stomach looked decent.

As far as weight, I will see if I can find the letter scale

I want to name him, but I know I will get too attached hahhah (it's not really working, he's just too cute)

I have been trying to stock up on all the knowledge I can and have performed all the necessary procedures during eating and after. Any advise is greatly appreciated

As far as handling goes, how often can I handle him? is there a point when it's too much or is it good to frequently handle him?

Can you post some pictures of this baby and his wounds. Cat Caught babies need Antibiotic Immediately. Baytril is the best Squirrel Choice.
If this baby has scratches or cuts from the cat, HE NEEDS TO BE ON SOME ANTIBODIC. We usually put them on Baytrill! He will DIE in 3 or 4 day from the Cat Bacteria left behind from the bites, and Infection. ""It can even be a small/pinhole, cut/puncher. This need ANTIBODIC immediately!!! Please get this baby to a Vet or a Rehabber. They can be doing fine one minute and Dieing the next.
I will post some information about the formula and feedings. :thumbsup

I would say @ 1-2 weeks old handling him is not needed to much at this age..... keeping him warm with fleece and a heating pad & well feed is more important.....
there will be plenty of time for holding him when he opens his eyes and he is able to better regulate his own body heat around 4-6 weeks old. :thumbsup

He NEEDS antibiotics or he will likely die. Period. Please right now go look and ask everyone you know if they have any left over antibiotics, either for themselves or a pet. Once you gathered these, come post which ones and someone here will help you dose it.

Baytril is good, also Cipro, or Bactrim, Septra. Just please right away go look. He life will probably depend on it.

Thanks Marty and everyone! Can you guys give me a list of easily-accessible antibiotics perhaps at drug stores? I have CVS right near my house and my sister can go get whatever is necessary. I know this a little selfish but we are trying not to give up until it is completely hopeless. Won't a rehabber or vet take our squirrel away from us?

Hear are 3 cites you will be needing to order the wright Formula Syringes, Nipples, A Heating Pad that DOES NOT shut off. This will be half under the container and half off. This will let the baby crawl off if he gets to warm. It needs to be on low. Add towels to the heat Pad to make it cooler. You also need to put Some Fleece or old T-Shirt inside the container for the baby to cuddle with.:thumbsup

http://henryspets.com
http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/
http://foxvalleynutrition.com/main/prod.asp
The Formula you need is FoxVally 32/40 He will be eating the 32/40 until he is weaned. Any of these places can help. You all so need a 1cc syringe and Silicone elongated nipples. They will have a hole in it already. You need this Formula next day or in 3 days.
ESBILAC Is no longer Recommended. They changed the formula and we have had Baby's Dieing from Diarrhea.
If this baby is only 1 to 2 weeks old he needs to be feed every 2 to 3 hours round the clock. (Every 24 hours) You all so need to add Heavy Whipping Cream and a Full Fat Yogurt. Spring Vally makes a Vanilla full fat Yogurt called YoBaby. This will be in the Organic Department.
Mixing Instruction.
1 TBS Esbilac
2 TBS Water
1 tsp Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1TBS HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM
Mix Esbilac, Water and Yogurt. Mix Very VERY well (Shake it in a container to mix all chunks.)
Then add the Heavy Cream Last. If not, the formula will come out looking like Butter. :D Remember the formula is only good for 24 hr. Keep The formula refrigerated, Keep the can of Esbilac Powder in the freezer and dip out how ever much Powder Formula you need. Get a ceramic Mug or a Glass. Heat the water just till barley hot. Dip the Syringe in the hot water for a few seconds. Check the Syringe to the top of the lip and under the nose. Should be Very Very warm! Almost hot. If the baby will not eat. It might not be warm enough. You need to keep this baby warped in Fleece to keep him warm. (Wrap him like a Burrito.) He will not eat is he is cold. Feed every 2 to 3 hr. He might eat 1/2 cc to 1 cc of formula. THIS IS WITH OUT KNOWING THE WEIGHT AND SEE THE PICTUERS OF HIM/Her. Please remember to stimulate Be for and after feeding, each time you feed. You need to take a wet paper towel or wash cloth to clean off the formula that gets on his face. Always feed this Baby laying flat on a table or your lap. NEVER Feed him on his BACK!:nono Please Remember raising a Baby Squirrel comes with a Big Responsibility. The Cost are High. You might need to read up on the Nutrition and need of a Squirrel in your spear time. :thumbsup3 Keep posting so we can help you Help this Baby. Good Luck With This Little Baby.
PS
Antibiotic Needed for a cat bite is Baytrill!! That is the best.
SulfaTrim is not as strong.

Good posting. If you want to take a look at the "All Squirrels go to Heaven" section, it's filled with people who also wanted to raise their squirrels without turning them over for the help they needed.
It just happened last night with a cat caught baby squirrel....:shakehead
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=107

And then a new member had a baby squirrel also in trouble last night, he kept it alive and got it to a rehabber today. Even he said that if he hadn't he knows his little one wouldn't make it without her help....:shakehead
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29841

Again, not wanting to be mean, but his life is in your hands; I pray that you do the right thing.

If we can find a member here who would be willing to help, they may give him back after the crisis. Last year I took in one that was in trouble...the girl asked if I would give him back, I said yes, let me get him through the crisis. She had done a lot of research and knew a lot about squirrels. She later decided that she would leave him here where he had buddies.
Thank you for doing what is necessary....:)

Cat caught squirrels is a death sentence without the proper meds and care.

Laurels Lilacs - PLEASE allow Marty to help you and your little one. She is AWESOME and she has the prescription medications that your little one MUST have to survive. If at the very least, allow Marty to get the baby stabilized for you. (you need to discuss this with Marty, but it MIGHT be an option) As many have said before, being caught by a cat is a death sentence for a squirrel.

Hi All, I want to thank Laura and her Dad for bringing little Mikie to me. I know it is a hard thing to do. Laura held him for me while I worked with him. He is 24 grams and about 1 week+ old. I worked to stabilize him and he did respond. He was losing his color and seemed to be losing strength and was slowing down. About 45 minutes later he pinked up and had more "wiggle" in him. He seems to be losing a little color again but has more strength than earlier. His lungs are clear. He has a loose stool but I believe that is most likely from the Esbilac. He is on Baytril and I cleaned his cat bites again and put a little antibiotic ointment on them. Laura and her family had already cleaned them yesterday. I am going now to feed all babies and will continue to watch, feed and hydrate him through the night. As we all know, with these tiny ones it is hard to know for sure what all is going on with them. Thank you all for your prayers. I will post as I can later. Please continue to pray for Mikie. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

For what you have done to help my little friend, if you ever need an extra hand in the house, I can come right over Marty. And in the process, learn a little myself.

I am sorta obsessed with wild animals, the way they behave psychologically and how they mature. My friends would actually make fun of me because they would ask me "what are you doing?" and I would always say something like ".... watching a wildlife show" or a "beg cat diary show" and everything else lol. And even if this is just "one little life" out of thousands of squirrel lives, it's still a life :). And if he goes down, i know he went down with the help and effort, as one of you said, that I would have wanted if it were me. Now I can't stop thinking about him lol :(.

I do pray for him. And maybe one day, I will be another one that knows what to do when someone tells me their baby squirrel or any other animal, is in great need of help.

I am feeling a little bit poetic, but it really was something seeing such a young helpless animal in my hands :grouphug

:thankyou , NIN, Last night was one of those "don't put him down" nights. Seemed to stay pinker if I held him and just hummed softly. I do believe in many cases this is what must be done to keep them going. I am always a little worried too, if we caught the bugs in time. She's acting very angry at me, it's actually quite funny. And you can just hear her making her way around our yard, alerting every little animal that lives close. All the birds start squawking at her and she has no other choice but to either come back inside, or just sit there. While we wait to see if Mikie has gotten better, does anyone have any good stories to tell us about their animals? I love to hear the stories :)

What an amazing thing you did by giving Marty the chance to save Mikie.

Had this little one not encountered a cat we could have helped you through raising and releasing a baby. There will be more opportunities for you. Until then, read many of the threads on the squirrel board and see how to properly take care of a new baby. The stories you want to read can be found under all of the catagories and many wonderful stories are there.

I really good read is in Success stories called Rama Rota King of Costa Rica. Stosh and his wife found a baby and the entire thread chronicles everything they learned to successfully raise a baby squirrel.

Check out nutrition section and how to raise a baby squirrel. Gosh I could read on here forever and ever.

Bless you for you unselfish act for Mikie. He is in the very best of hands with Marty and this very dangerous situation regarding a cat bite.:grouphug

Hi Laura , Mrs Skull and all those who have prayed for me and for Mikie. I will admit I was a little worried . Mikie came in at 24 grams and by Wed. morning he was 22.8 grams. Not good for a pinkie but he did seem strong and was staying pink. I added some cream to the formula on Wed and by this morning Mikie is weighing in at a monster size 28.8 grams. I believe that all of your( our) prayers were heard and I was guided as to what to do with this delicate little angel. I am so thankful for all of the support I have had. I will give a better update later as ... you guessed it... It is time to feed again.:Love_Icon MIKIE ROCKS!!!

(Mrs Skull, :thankyou :thankyou for your continued prayers and faith in me. I am so thankful for your concern and kindness. :Love_Icon The other little pink was DOA. He took his last breath in my hand.) I have taken in 2 others since Thur. Tomorrow will bring many others, after the storm.)

thanks for updating us! my family likes to hear all about Mikey and it makes us all happy that he's doing great. How does he look now, is he getting bigger?
