I am new here but I hope that someone can help me. My Hobbie girl who is a grey squirrel just turned 4years old this month. During this time she got a UTI. Had her on Baytril. Since then she has been on a down hill slide. Started loosing weight, letharigic, not eating very much. Every now and then she will shake her head like it's her ears. Her teeth are fine also. She has been on fruits, veggies, rat blocks. She has always had a very good appetite. Got her on Tums. I have taken her nuts away for the time being. She is still drinking water and she nibbles at her food. I have also gave her some Nutri-Cal. Pee and poop are normal. Here is her history, when she was found she was comatos, bleeding out of her nose and mouth, and the left side of her head was swollen. I know it wasn't a car that hit her because the day that she was found there was an art show going on and the streets were shut down. I do have another squirrel and she is going strong. The vet she seen when she had her UTI has since left. I have call other places but to no avail. Could someone please help me out. It is killing me!! Thanks!!

You said she is on tums? How often and you also mentioned nutri-cal I am no expert but it seems like that is a lot of calcium not including the calcium that she is getting in her diet.... I know to much calcium can be toxic
experts will be here soon prayers are being sent your way :grouphug

Thank you. She has only had 2 doses of the Nutri-Cal. I think I wore most of it.
:grouphug
some questions for you ...where are you near which city ...in case we have a tsb member that can help with vets etc... (not to take her away from you)
when was the uti treated????
was the baytril expired/old etc.. or did the vet give it to you....
is she still on baytril?
how much tums does she get? how much nutri cal? for how long has she been getting this....
does she eat the blocks?
when you found her, that was four years ago? ...when she was comatose....
(i'm not a rehabber but hopefully someone will be on soon)
as for the vet... maybe you can find out where he's gone to ... if you want pm me the name and initials and i'll see if i can google him and see if he's available elsewhere.....

We live in the Atlanta area. The UTI was about 3 weeks ago. She got better then took the turn down hill. The vet that she seen gave her the Baytril. She's not on the Baytril anymore. I started a couple of day ago giving her 500mg. Tums crushed, mixed in water during the day and night. As for the Nutri-Cal she got 0.3mg. last night and earlier today. But like I said earlier I wore most of it. She nibbles on her rat blocks. She has always been picky. I've had to watch her because she is sneaky with her food. She was comatose when we got her. But sometimes I think she was more stunned. I don't know how long she was out before she was brought to us. As for the vet that she seen, she left on really bad terms from the hospital that a friend of mine works at.

Is it possible for you to call your friend and explain the situation and ask for any info as to where the vet went?
I am trying to reach some of our rehabbers right now. I wish I had more to offer you. Hang in there...there are many of us trying to find help for you.:Love_Icon

OK, I apparently cannot send a private message. Maura, I'm going to pass it along to you. Can you get it to her?

If possible, you may need to adjust your profile so members can email you. PM's (private messages) are not available to you just yet. If you are comfortable posting an email address here on this thread, AtlantaSquirrelGirl can then email you.

Sometimes she will get out of her bed and drink but most times here of late it is me giving it to her.

Can you give us some more background? Sorry for all of the questions but the more info we have the better we can help?
How long have you had Hobbie?
How long ago was the head swelling?
Do you have her on a heat supply? (a heating pad set on low? if not, do so, so she does not need to use energy to maintain body temps)
Did you have her on any probiotics while she was on the Baytril? She may have an upset tummy?
How long was she on the Baytril...how many days and what was the dose? UTI's are hard to beat and normally require a longer course of meds.

Just wondering if the Baytril may have upset the natural order of bacteria in the stomach.:thinking
Thought's anyone?

:wave123 Hi Never 2 Many
You might think about putting her on some Yogurt. That will help with her tummy being upset. I always give my Squirrels Cranberry Juice, or CranGrape. They love it. It all so helps with the Kidneys. Do you have any frozen cranberry? :thinking They work grate and a good treat.
I hope your little one gets to feeling better soon. :grouphug
PS
You might wont to back off the Tums.
If she is not eating the right foods.
This will stop her from metabolizing the calcium like she needs. (""Unless you think MBD for some reason!"")
Is Hobbie still Peeing? Is she straining? Is their any blood in her Pee?:thinking Could all so be Kidney stones! I will send you a PM.
Try this and get back to me with the results. :thumbsup3

Just wanted to give everyone an update on my Hobbie. Yesterday I heated some baby food that I have and gave her some of it. She went to town eating it. When I put her back to bed I noticed she came out and started eating her food without me having to offer it to her. When I went to feed her and her sister this morning lets just say my little girl is getting her attitude back. She was fussing at me because I woke her up! That's my girl! She then came out and started eating her food. YEAH!! She is still a little weak but it's like she is coming out of whatever was going on. I will continue to keep you posted. Thank you everyone for the prayers!!!
