Large bleeding sores on tail

My 9 month old grey Riggs has some large bleeding sores on his tail from about half way down from the tip. I first noticed it yesterday and thought that he may have just cought it on something and pulled some hair off but today it is much worse. I tryed to get a pic but he is in pain and wont let me mess with it so the pic dosent show much. It looks like large bleeding sores evenly spaced runing down 1/3 of tail to the tip.

Poor baby! :( I don't know much about what the sores could be, but I know in dogs that moisture can make them worse, like if he is chewing or licking it. Have you noticed him doing that?

Hopefully someone with more experience will be here soon...

Does he have sores any place else or any where else on his body?? I would clean the sores with warm water. Let them dry and then apply neosporin. I see you have the right bar spacing on his cage. Sometimes however a cat can get just one claw on the tail and pull it. Do you have a cat??? If that happened you will need to start Riggs on an antibiotic. If no cat then just apply neosporin. (The kind that does NOT have ZINC in the ingredient list. Most antibiotic ointment/creams do not contain Zinc but lately I have noticed some are now including it in the ingredient list.)

Is he kept inside or is he an outside squirrel?

I dont have any cats and Riggs is a indoor sq. I dont see any other sores on him and he is acting normal. He did have some wounds on his tail in that area when I got him but they fully healed. I have noticed him lick it a few times but havent seen him chewing on it.
