Okay, I have a 400 gram baby raccoon that I got on Monday. He's been doing fine until yesterday. The guy who gave him to me had him on Nurturall - C, a kitten milk replacement formula that he got from the vets office. I have kept him on that until I got the Fox Valley yesterday and I have mixed it 50/50 Fox Valley/Nurturall until now. He has had what I call "soft serve" poops since I got him so I dewormed him yesterday as well w/ pyrantel pamoate. Now the little guy has bad diarrhea after his feedings. After the first episode I cut the formula W/ water & now I have him on homemade pedialyte. I think I will go back to the Nurturall, as Nick said he had been getting complaints about a change in the raccoon formula. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Hi Baxied :wave123
I have 7 baby Raccoons that I am taking care of right now.
This is my first year rehabbing them so I am very green.
The first three I got were in the 700 gram size.
The last four I got in were in the 400 gram weight.
I did one day of electrolytes when I got them..then got them on the
Fox Valley Day One Formula 40/25 Raccoon.
I had some trouble at first with some diarrhea it was soft serve then it got messy..went through lots of newspaper.
I backed off the mix a lot...I think I was mixing a pint of water to a 1/4 cup Fox Valley Day One Formula 40/25 Raccoon
of Fox Valley Day One Formula 40/25 Raccoon...It was too much for them doing the 1 part mix to two parts water..they were pooping almost white.
I did do a couple of electrolyte feedings while they had Diarrhea...then got them back to the weaker FV Mix.
I always offer them formula mixed with Purina dog food in a bowl to get them chomping on things.
I got them wean now or they kind of wean themselves.
I feed them Purina dog food in a bowl once a day for breakfest for lunch it grapes and watermellon and one fig cookie each ..dinner they get some cooked chicken and a little bit more dog food.
If you have any bait Shops around they love crawdads.
Give them lots of clean pans of water.
Wash your hands like Crazy :crazy
Good Luck :tilt

Thanks Steve!! Yeah, my hands are already VERY chapped. I feel like a germaphobe with this little guy. I will dilute the formula and see if that helps. I may have more questions for you in the future if you don't mind.:)

We raised our first coonie on Nutrical-C and she did great with that formula. Our vet had given it to us as well...they said they preferred that over the KMR. The last few coonie we did we also did the same formula and we ended up having 1 with soft serve poop.
Good luck with your little one...these guys will steal your heart!

Yes, I am definitely in love. I even catch my husband, who prefers not to be involved in the rehabbing, stealing looks at little Ray and asking about him. I have been following the protocol set out in Wild Mammal Babies and we are now back to soft serve - a little softer than I would like, but better at least. Funny - I have been thinking about what I would give to have a nice solid turd at this point!!!:shakehead

Middle of night feeding & diarrhea was back. UGH!!! I am staying within the 5% of body weight rule but maybe feeding too soon after last feeding? :thinking I am just thinking and trying to come up with a solution. He seems to be doing well though. He is walking much better and becoming more active. He is teething also, and I did read somewhere that they can have diarrhea when teething. :dono

Can we give the little guy some thing (ex: Kaopectate) while we try and figure this out? - so the tummy doesnt have to suffer in the mean time.

I am going in just a minute to get some. I am hoping that it buys me some time.

Upon investigation I am not sure that I can give kaopectate to the little guy. Has anyone given it to a raccoon before?
