Found two baby squirrels, did great for the first week. Male had formula come out of his nose a few times and I'm pretty sure he now has pneumonia. Will not breathe thru his nose, makes speaking nose with every breathe as he breathes with his mouth open. I had some liquid antibiotics, gave 02ccs. Have them in a large rubber made container with a heating pad. Not sure how old they are, but I think the tree squirrels eyes will be open soon. I've never done this before was desperate to save their lives. Now I'm desperate to find a rehabber ASAP! Any help would be great. Located in Lakeland, FL

I have contacted Rhapsody, a member here who lives in Lakeland and asked her to help you find a rehabber. She may be able to help but if not, hopefully she can find someone close to you that can.
I don't know when she will get her message but hopefully there will be some other experienced rehabbers come on that can offer advice.

Thank you! I hope he makes it thru the night. His breathing is getting worse. I will keep checking the forum for updates.

I do too. Below is copied from information on this board regarding Aspiration Pneumonia:
ASPIRATION PNEUMONIA
Aspiration occurs when fluid or food travels into the airway. This is the same as if you swallow and it goes down the wrong "pipe" or laugh and shoot your drink out your nose. In baby animals, this is usually caused by feeding too fast.
Symptoms of Aspiration:
-Sneezing
-Bubbles from the nose
-Coughing or choking
How to Prevent Aspiration:
-Use the proper tools: a quality 1-cc o-ring syringe (never use bottles or large or cheap syringes!)
-Feed the baby in an upright position, with the tip of the syringe pointing up to the baby's mouth
-Feed slowly! Go drop by drop for a smaller baby
-Please see (NEED LINK) for proper feeding techniques
Aspiration can can introduce bacteria into the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia, which is fatal if not treated with antibiotics. However, not all aspiration leads to pneumonia.
If you believe the baby has aspirated:
-IMMEDIATELY stop feeding
-Wipe the nostrils and mouth with an absorbent tissue
-Use an ear or nasal bulb syringe to suck out the nostrils
-Turn the baby head down and tap gently tap its back
-Wait until next feeding to resume feeding
-Next time, FEED MORE SLOWLY
If the baby has aspirated, watch carefully for the following symptoms.
Symptoms of Aspiration Pneumonia:
-Loss of appetite
-Lethargy
-Clicking sound when breathing
-Inability to maintain body temperature
-Open mouth or "guppy" breathing
-Raspy breathing sounds coming from the chest
Treatment:
-Place on a heating pad set on low in a PLASTIC container
-FIND A VETERINARIAN OR REHABBER ASAP
-Antibiotics must be started immediately or the baby will die
Aspiration pneumonia is a life-threatening illness. Contact a veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator immediately. Also, start a thread in the "Emergency (Life Threatening) Help Needed" section of TSB so we can assist you in finding medical help.

If you can't find someone closer and can get them to Gainesville I'll take them. As you have judged on your own the boy needs immediate medical attention. Hopefully the member who's been contacted will be in touch. Is his nose blocked with mucous? I've had good success using one of those soft rubber infant bulb syringes to gently suck the mucous out. It's just a stop gap measure to allow for easier breathing. Let me know if I can help. I have access to antibiotics.

Long night........but I do have good news. He is breathing out of his nose again. Still a lil congested. But no where near last night. Poor lil guy scared me so bad. He just ate and used the bathroom and was very active during the feeding. I just gave another .02cc but I only have snuff meds for two more doses. I'm going to pm Rhapsody right now. So thankful for this forum!

Jackie....
I did get two other squirrels in today as well (males - about 2 weeks younger) than the boy and girl I got from twisham and I think one of the boys may have a tooth issue :( --I will watch him and see how it look in another week and when I bring Marven over for his next trim I will bring this little guy for you to look at IF he seems to have developed an issue.
