Russ went and picked this guy up for me today who was found in a bucket of oats left out for a horse.
He has obvious mange and mites and is being treated. He also looks very very thin. He doesn't care much to be handled.
He is hydrated and warm and gaining energy....almost hard to get a pic of him. His ears are full of some sort of light brownish matter...almost looks packed in and he is urinating on himself. He also appears to have a back injury....moves a bit funny.
I guess him at a few weeks younger than the Rockers.
He has some pretty runny stools....but then again the only thing he has had today was pedialite and watermelon. He has two white spots on his back that look like pimples.
Should I start him on some FV? His teeth are white....not orangish like they should be. He moves around pretty well...but you can tell it hurts. He doesn't have the strength to grip tightly.
I just got home so I need to look him over much better....Im letting him rest in between.
Poor Little Guy!!
We have named him Flash.
I kept the pic big so you can see him better..... hard to get him to stay still.

Oh Jo! That poor baby! I'm no expert, but FV seems to always be a great start. Revolution for the mange? I am sure one of the experts will be along soon. (((Flash))):grouphug

Thanks SM!
I sure hope someone who knows what to do sees this.
Poor guy pees himself whenever I touch him.
I want to get a better look at the sawdust looking stuf packed in his ears...but....well...he is a RED...which means even when he's not up to par...he's super fast.
I wish he would calm down.
I tried some RR....hasn't helped yet.

Here are some better pics of him.
I am washing him down with some water and a soft cloth now and he will get his Revolution when I am done.
He took 1 cc of FV out of a syringe.....but then refused. I soaked some wheat squares in it and he ate it all.
last pic is of the white bumps.
omg!!! i'm so sorry no one has seen this until now....
i don't know what he is.....
i was thinking a real baby but he seems older .... (i know ... duh for me....!!!)
so apart from maybe back/spine injuries and ear infestation and skin infestation too ... what do you think ???
i've never seen anything like this....
jo_schmoe
08-05-2011, 11:46 PM
He's a Red squirrel...probably about 3 weeks younger than the Reds I already have.
Im pretty positive its mange...so he has been washed down with a warm cloth and he just now had his dose of Revolution.
He will get another in 2 weeks.
Im going to leave his ears alone for tonight....poor guy has had a pretty traumatic day already.
If you know of anyone that can help guide me in what to do....I would be so grateful!
i think everyone has gone to bed....
but he's comfortable...??? he's eaten ...peed, pooped and now he's nice and warm?
you've started the revolution and now you can't do much but wait....
but as far as internal injuries ... we've no idea....
i was thinking those pimples could have been teeth marks ... or something... ?
he's skinny but it'd make sense too because of the mites etc...
so exactly how old do you think he is...i've no idea how old your rockies are and if they're reds or greys.....
and if they're reds then that makes you one of the few people on tsb who is a red expert....
:grouphug
edit...you said you had reds.... that makes you an expert on reds....:grouphug
when nancy sees this she'll probably have some suggestions....:grouphug

He is all of the above. Fed, warm and medicated. He is probably around 12 weeks. He weighs 74 gms. I wish he would have eaten a bit more FV...but even what he did eat is probably better than anything he has had since he was an infant still nursing.
I will patiently wait till morn and see if anyone has any ideas.
well at least he ate something and on his own...which is an excellent sign....
as you said he's had diarrhea all day ...so he's probably slightly dehydrated... so maybe he doesn't feel like eating ... but you've already used pedialyte....
maybe a little bit more just water with some apple juice etc... (although it hasn't been 24 hours yet....pedialyte... maybe some watered formula and then some pedialyte during the night.... ):grouphug

I just now got a response from another rehabber.
She said its the worse case of mange ( mites ) she has ever seen.
On a good note the fact that he's eating well and his eyes are nice and glossy means he has a good chance at beating this.
He had the Revolution and now I am going to dose him with some Abs ( sulfatrim)....in case of any other infection.
Sounds like it could take a couple of months for his fur to grow back....uhhh....in a couple of months it will be in the 30's here and snowing off and on.

No...I got him to be calm...( with the help of a pecan) and they are scabs....probably from the mites Im thinking.
I am going to try in the morning to wash them out a bit....better get my pecans ready.

That's one rough looking critter. So pitiful :-( We have no reds in FL so I have no specific knowledge of them. I'm concerned about the matter in his ears. It sounds like fly eggs which really need to be cleaned out asap. They hatch quickly and maggots can be deadly. I usually use betadine diluted with warm water. You may have to pick them off with tweezers. Look for maggots in any orafices. Do you have septra? I'd probably start him on this assuming infection is likely. So much going on with him it's hard to know where to begin. He may not want FV if he's an adult. See if he'll go for veggies or rodent block to get some nutrition in him. That's all I can think of at this time of the a.m. Sending you and Flash healing energy.

I got a pretty good look at them and they are definitely scabs.
I know what fly eggs look like....last year I plucked what seemed like 100 of them out of the eyelid of a squirrel. Probably the grossest thing I have ever had to do. :shakehead
When I checked him over real well...I didn't see any signs of fly eggs or maggots.
I am not familiar with septra. I have him on Abs as a just in case infection.

Good to hear no maggots. Scabs might be from scratching mange. All you're doing sounds right. I'm sure others will come on in a.m. with more ideas. Night.

Oh My!
Poor little baby. Joe call me!
Which Revolution are you using? I use 10 /20 LBS. I would use half a tub every 2 weeks for 6 more TREATMENTS!!
On November 4 I would use 1 Whole Tub of Revolution for 3 months. I would skip Feb and see if there is any new egg Hatching.
Remember when you open the Revolution it has to all be used on something. :shakehead It is no good to cap it and use again in two weeks. :nono
You might use the rest on your little ones you have at home. So there is no surprise buggies traveling. :D The mange mites will lay eggs down in the skin where the hair follicles grow. By the look of the ears, they are eating away. Hope they have not penetrated the ear drum.
(Mites can lay Tons of eggs inside the ears!) When the ears start to heal. Watch for scratching the ears till they bleed. There is a med you can put inside to stop the itching During the Healing. (You might need a EColler if that happens.) If you are going to clean the ears out,
try not to get the spot wet where you put the Revolution. I would use a Damp Tip. Try to just get the scabs off. Careful, Careful, Carefully if using a Bobbie pen. Do not go down into the ear canal. You can massage the ear canal. Just a little under the opening of the ear. This will help break up the crusty gunk. The Antibiotics are a great Idea. I would treat for at least 15 days 2 Times a day! :thumbsup3.May be more if the ears don't clear up.
Are you feeding some FV? Remember the Yogurt for his little tummy.
Ronda

awww what a little trooper.... Prayers for Flash :Love_Icon
I use mineral oil to break up crusty gunk in ears ..if you are able to massage a bit into his ears I think it can be soothing too. Might be a lil hard to do if you can't really handle him. Another thought might be to use neosporin or whatever abic ointment on the ears...just to help ward off infection. His immune system has to be seriously compromised right now - so any prophylactic treatments might be a good idea.
Just tossing these thoughts out there..I have never handled reds - so of course all deference is to the rehabbers and red experts:bowdown

OMG that POOR baby! He must have been suffering for a long time. I am so glad you got him, Jo. What you are doing sounds just right. Before you go after the scabs in the ears, first use a q-tip to saturate the mess with some oil - olive, coconut, mineral, whatever. Let iy sit for a while, then sarurate it again, Give it time to really saturate all of that residue - it will come out a lot faster and should prevent it from bleeding and hurting when you do. Not that you need to because of the revolution, but the oil will actully smother the mites, too.
Make him some "weaning slop" - grind some squirrel block and mix with FV and a little bit of almond butter and warm if and see if he will like the semi-solid better than the syringe.

Sounds like you are getting great advise and know what you are doing.
I agree...mineral oil and q-tips...
Poor little guy..
smz-tmp, good idea
I would start with very dilute formula with yogurt and a wee pinch of extra calcium if you think he has spine injury...Up the amount each feeding, adding more FV than water slowly each feeding. I would hydrate between feedings with pedialyte.
Also dilute molasses water a couple times a day, keeping his blood sugars up. The mites have his immune system very low on top of whatever else is happening. Wet poops are probably from his weak system too, cocchidia is treated with the Sulfa based AB that you are using, perfect:thumbsup
Seems like you have covered your bases...
please continue to hydrate, diarhhea causes dehydration.
Adding low heat is also suggested. Keep him toasty.
Poor little naked Flash:Love_Icon
are you thinking ant bites??
If he continues to itch/scratch, maybe tomorrow if he is hydrated , you can give him some benedryl.
Good luck...

Thank you stosh and gs1 -- I did not see this thread last night! :dono I had the same reaction as Ms oakley: looks like fly eggs in the ears. I would get those off quick, and if that's indeed what they are then some Capstar would really help in case they are also internal.
No expert on reds here, but I know they love pine nuts. Possibly something you can whip up with pine nuts in it that wouold really encourage him to eat?
With no fur and so debilitated he's going to chill easily (I know you know this already :D) so warmth is essential, especially if your place is air conditioned....
The ABX are a very good idea. :thumbsup

Well....he is definitely feeling better. He chattered and charged my hand when I reached in to feed him.
Last time I checked on him was 3 am...and I placed some FV mash in his cage then. At 7:30 this am it was all gone.
He just now had another 5 ccs of FV....and he is letting me syringe it ( sorta just laps it off the tip almost like a water bottle)
I am out of water bottles....( the rockers have been through 7 of them :shakehead )....so I have to run to Fargo and get a few more.
Today we are going to try some veggies and more FV.
Im thinking Booballs will be great for this guy. ( my reds LOVE LOVE LOVE them)
I will be trying to oil those ears up today....just remember he is a Red....a WILD RED....so it could take a bit of time. Also I will add some yogurt as it can't hurt and will probably help with any yuck in his gut.
He is on constant heat and you can really tell he is comfortable.
He is maintaining heat and his appetite is great.
Maybe when he gets used to who has the goodies....he will take to me a bit more.
I am using Revolution for cats 5-15 pounds....he is getting a dose of .05-.10. I will follow up with another in 2 weeks and do so for the next couple of months.
I dont see any fly eggs in his ears....they are scabbed over....but who knows what I will find once the scabs are slipped off.
I LOVE the mollases idea and will try that when he wakes up again.
Most of his time is spent sleeping and eating....but can you blame him??
Id like to get a better look at his gait....and see if he does have a back injury or if he is just weak and walking funny from being so sick. But he really just wants to be warm and sleep.

There is one more problem. This guy was found at the release sight for the Rockers. Good thing is now I know there are other females out there besides their mom....but man ....do they all have mange??
I wonder if I can dose up a few nuts with revolution and peanut butter and treat them all.
The Rockers are being moved out there next weekend.

See what the experts say, but I don't think one with mange means it is epidemic. I have seen a litter of puppies who had it but mom didn't have it nearly as bad if at all. It seems to be something that some don't get or that is worse if nutrition or immune system is somehow lacking.
I defer to the experts here for sure though! Hhhmmm...a red might make a nice addition to your holiday decorations...:jump :jump :jump

Cat Revolution is more Concentrate. This is a lot stronger then What I use. I still would dose the same amount of time. Something you might want to pick up, Aloe Juice (nature food stores should have it). Add some to some water, and if you will let you, soak a cotton ball in that (warm water and aloe juice) and gently pat his body with the cotton ball (not soaked, squeeze it out, just leave it damp enough to get on his skin.) Aloe will help his skin to feel so much better while the revolution is doing its job and the meds. Make sure he has lots of fleece to snuggle in after so he won't get chilled. Poor little guy....I am a Flash fan, too! He is very lucky to have found his way to you!!!

He is doing really good. Just getting ready to offer him some more FV.
He's nice and toasty....I hope not too warm.
He feels warm to the touch....Im just not used to one that feels this warm. Im chalking it up to having no hair as he wont move from the heat.
He didn't want much to do with the veggies and fruit I offered ( avocados, blackberries and nectarine) He did eat all of the FV mash though.
He has gained 5 gms since yesterday.

If he was too warm he would move off the heat. It probably feels good to him with not feeling well and all. I know when I don't feel well (and I am naked) I like to be kept warm. :D
Nice steady gain every day is the way to go. Good nutrition will help him heal. Can't wait to see what a beauty he turns out to be.
Nice job, Joe! :thumbsup

I thought 5 gms was quite a bit for a day...but I suppose when you are starving and dehydrated....5 gms is nothing.
He hasn't wanted as much to eat today as yesterday....took about 12 ccs of FV all day. He did eat some FV mash and a pecan or two. I noticed last night that he likes to eat at night when the house is very quiet. I made up some more mash and veggies and fresh water. Im hoping by morning most of it will be gone.
He is getting used to me a bit more. He's letting me reach in and pet his head now. :D :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

The special needs squirrels always get me too! I have a head-tilt girl (Ruthie) right now that has completely stolen my heart. She too was a totally wild squirrel (hit by a car). She came to me through Anne. These little guys totally wrap me around their little squirrel fingers. I could squeel just thinking about how much I love them.
Ruthie likes to get up at night and eat too. I think they are wired for their own protection. Safer for them to not be out foraging in the day time when they are injured or sick. :dono Just a thought ... have absolutely nothin' to back that up. :thinking

That makes so much sense. The Rockers are all passed out by 8 pm....and not much will wake them up. They never ever wake up at night and eat......they have nothing to fear really. But 5 am rolls around and if breakfast is not there within 5 mins....they will shake their cage and start throwing dishes.
Little Flash spends most of his day hiding under his blankets and only mostly when I reach in and get him. He always has food...but I have to bring him out and offer it to him by hand or he wont eat unless its at night.

I wish I could have gotten a pic of this....but its too dark.
He crawled up to my hand and let me rub him....then b-lined for a pecan and sat up and ate the whole thing. He then went to the water dish...splashed a minute with his paws and gave himself a bath.
I want to get a look at his teeth tomorrow....and Im dreading it.
He eats kinda funny....like he cant open his mouth all the way.
Any hints on how to do this? When I think about it I shake. LOL

When I trimmed MIRA's teeth...RamaMama burrito-wrapped her in fleece holding her secure, while I slid an ice cream stick in from the side, behind her teeth. It gave us a perfect view to INSPECT her teeth.

Thank you Stosh.
I will be checking teeth today.:osnap
Flash is doing GREAT!
I am concerned about his diet though....he wont eat anything but FV, FV mash and pecans.
I am limiting the pecans to 1/2 per day and see if he will take to some veggies or fruit. I kinda let him have whatever he wanted just to get something in him. Now he's holding out for pecans and not touching the good stuff.
Maybe there IS something wrong with his teeth.....and he cant chew the veggies. Not sure....but when I see a squirrel turn down fresh kernels of corn....I have to wonder.
Trying to upload some new pics but its not letting me. :dono

slow introduction to food is best anyway.
Has your baby gained any weight?
I am sorry I haven't been following every post, I also have babies and emaciated sq...
I have no clue what normal reds weigh and know that others are helping that have experienvce with them...but wanted to share that with all emaciated mammels, it is best to go slow with food...
baby steps...

I dont...but I have a food processor and a blender.
Im going to try and just remove the pecans. He just now was given a dish of broccoli, cabbage, and a few chunks of watermelon.
He is having plenty of poohs...( you should see my shoulder)...and plenty of pees too....( again...look at my shoulder)
He is getting plenty of nutrition with the FV mash....and he loves it.
When he is finished with his ABs....he gets to try yogurt.
He is 79 gms....not up from yesterday but no loss. He has gained 5 gms in 2 days.
He looks so much better....
Lets try these pics again.....
Nope...still wont work.

So check this out.
Bear with me here...I got the "new mommy syndrome" going on so I worry a bit much for the moment.
Look at his nose...notice no black stripe?
I looked back on the Rockers pics when they were naked pink beans...still had their belly buttons. They all had the black stripe...like its pigmented in their skin. I remember someone who had worked with reds making a comment how they never knew they had the stripe on their skin.
Flash doesnt have that stripe.....makes me wonder.
I know he didnt scratch it off.....im just baffled I guess.
Look at the comparison.
It was mentioned to me earlier through another that he may be a mutant squirrel.....I screeched like a 3 yr old and have no clue what that means.

You can add Multidophilus to his mash to help with good gut bacteria. It comes in the refrigerated section of a health food store. Just open a capsule and sprinkle it on ... mix and serve. I add Multidophilus to the Boo Ball recipe.

The pet store sells lava like triangles for critters who like to chew. I have given them to my girls who have a tendency to grow longer teeth and it has kept me from having to clip them. I also give apple orchard sticks to chew and the occasional whole walnut/filbert/brazil nut ... they have a harder shell than the pecan or almond so they have to work a little harder to get through. I also toss plain Harlan Teklad rodent blocks for them to gnaw on.
As long as you don't see a malloclusion they should be able to keep them at a reasonable length on their own. Keep and eye on them though ... should they need a little nip from time to time you'll be on top of it. :thumbsup

THANK YOU STOSH!!!!!
Im going to see if he will wear them down a bit by himself first. He should...I see no signs of malocclusion.
Im thinking his immune system was suppressed....that would explain the mite infestation....and he probably didn't feel much like chewing anything. Im hoping the Abs will fix that.
I will give it one week and if he hasn't started chewing....then your video will be my guide.
He is starting to venture out of his bed during the day......before we had to take it away for a bit just so he would come out and eat. He REALLY likes his bed...warm and cozy.
Just now got home from work.....went to say Hi....he was out...eating some broccoli......:jump .....and he didn't run away when I said Good Boy!!!!

Honestly.....I haven't a clue! LOL
He moves like a Red....has the white eye ring like a Red....small like a Red....has a similar attitude like a Red ( he lets me burrito him but the other Reds would rip my hands off.....so he is a bit nicer).....but no black stripe. :dono

I PM'd Squirelgirl, who helped me a lot with MIRA and her teeth trimming. She looked on your thread, and agreed that FLASH could definitely use a little trim. She asked me to post some pics of her little one, FRICKY, ( see BELOW ) to show proper tooth length-- compare above the gum line. Her photo is a tad uneven-- because of finger pressure to fricky's gums.

Awwww, thank you Uncle Stosh...says Fricky.:flash3
Its hard to see that Fricky's teeth are much shorter, unless you can zoom in....but keep in mind that Fricky is older also...and larger.
Flash needs a nippin'.
I am actually shocked that Flash does not have a runny nose and teary eyes yet, unless they are curling back.
Fricky never needed a trim, which I am surprised at, as he came in older and debilitated.
Stosh is VERY coorect...look at the shorter toof on Fricky. They are both the same length, but the one on my finger pressure side is the best seen.

I would think boiling water for 2 or 3 minutes and the rub down with alcohol. You need good cutters to do a good job.
The blades should not have ANY nicks in them... not even small ones. They should close completely...for the full length of the cutting surface. No light getting thru.I bought mine just for MIRA...so I was sure they were "sharp". They were never used before ( or after...)

Jackie in Tampa poste this a while back:Odontomas are very possible if you clip with bad tools, if your sq moves while clipping...
if the tool you use doesn't cut like butter, quick, easy and quiet...throw it away.
A squirrel with malocclusion -- teeth which do not grind themselves down normally, and grow too long -- will need clipping every three weeks.
Odontomas are dangerous and can kill your squirrel.
Dremels scare sqs, but many use them.
The cheapest trim I have ever paid for was $18.. the most expensive was $78...same sq, different doc.
Wire cutters are not what I use, although that's what they look like. Do not use cheap chinese junk.
You must file afterwards, males can slice their penis while grooming.Clipping must be done with nothing else going on, in a well lit quiet atmosphere when the sq is in a good mood perferably.
NORMAL uppers grow toward throat, close to roof of mouth. Long teeth can allow food to get stuck between roof and teeth and the sq can choke to death. Lowers can grow into roof of mouth, puncture sinuses and cause sever infection.
overgrown teeth will stop a sq from eating and lead to pain and possible septic infections...this is a serious matter.
I do not like to clip teeth, and am scared everytime, and I do it every three weeks for seven years...point, never think you're good at it, never relax, it needs 1oo% of your attention and dedication.
Good LUCK...You can do IT...

THE TEETH ARE TRIMMED!!!!!!
It had to wait a bit because the Rockers decided they would chew another hole in their cage....and threw a party in the squirrel room. :shakehead
He did great....as soon as I put the stick in his mouth he started chewing like, "I PROMISE I will chew.....I PROMISE!!!!"
They snapped off pretty easy....almost too easy. Kinda has me a bit concerned...but I suppose they would be since he was starving and so sick.
I wanted to get a pic of the after....but he's kinda stressed out so I let him back in his sleepy sack...( Thanks to his new Nana Nancy).
I did however before the trim notice this....not a great pic but his ear is seeping....yesterday he has a big goober in that ear and I slipped what I could out with oil and a qtip.....now today he has gotten it all out...but scratched himself raw.
Neosporin?? Or is there something else I need to do.
He has been on ABs for 5 days now...2x per day.
He also had the Revolution about a week ago.

LOL....my heart is still pounding! I think he was more mellow than I was by far!!! Russ was crackin up cuz I kept taking big breaths and looking up at him for some comfort and reassurance.
For some reason I thought they(teeth) would be a lot harder than they were....they are very very brittle.
Now....I am pouring a big glass of Merlot....and trying to catch my breath.
Flash....you are so brave!!:Love_Icon :Love_Icon

Me too Nan.....me too!! He loves that sack so much he never leaves it. The pic is him in the sac.
He is getting quite the belly!!! I hope some of that turns into muscle....cuz right now he looks like a squirrel that needs Sally Struthers...and an 800 number.:osnap
So is there anything wrong with keeping a squirrel on some means of Fox Valley for a long period of time?? Im kinda worried ( imagine that) about the brittleness of the teeth. If they are that brittle....can you imagine how his bones must be??
Right now he REALLY likes the FV mash...he will take that over fruit anytime. He picks at veggies....he adores Boo Balls and he nibbles at block. But by far his favorite is his half a pecan night time snack.

Rama Rota gets his Fox Valley syringe ( 8-10 cc) twice a week...every week...and Boo Balls ( with Fox Valley) every day.

Little guy has GOT to feel better. Poor ears. Is he itchin cause of mites or cause they itch. Would Cortisone cream help if they just itch or do we take up a collection and order an e-collar?

Well....he had mites....but was treated. I think the mites were inside his ears....and either they chewed on them....or were just so irritating that he scratched himself raw....leaving huge scabs inside his ear. I noticed last night that he still had a scab in one ear so I tried to ease it out a bit. Im pretty sure he finished removing it today.....and just over did it with the scratching. I dont see him scratching himself at all anymore ( only this ear and only today)....so I think the mites are under control.

As rough as the little guy is right now--imagine the suffering he would have endured if you hadn't been there for him.

Jo, check your tube of neosporin and see if it has zinc in it - if not. put a little dab on his poor ear - it eill help with any infection and alsp keep it soft and moist. If he keeps scratching at the wound and opening it, I can give you a benadryl dose for him to help with the "healing itch."
He is so terribly malnourished, I would treat him like a baby and just pretty much start over, so yes, go for it with the FV and his FV glop. I bet that good food and protection and warmth and lovin will reboot his little body. Of course you have a winter boarder there...
