Hi guys, I am still pretty new to this board, and it's great. I have raised a few different litters of squirrels and released, but I have never had this many at one time (4) and this young (2 weeks when I got them.)
Things have been going great, they are about 3 1/2 weeks now. They eat well (puppy milk, cream, little bit of plain yogurt) about 4cc every 3-4 hours, and peeing and pooping just fine.
My question is that my little girl squirrel has 3-4 very cloudy drops of urine at the end of emptying her bladder. Her stream starts off clear, but for the past day, the last few drops are as opaque as the puppy milk.
I didn't see this on the list of symptoms for a UTI, but it doesn't seem normal. She doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything and acts fine, except for the cloudy urine.
Has anyone seen this before and if so, what should I do?
hello sundog...:Welcome
i don't know the answer to your question but considering how young she is i'm putting a new thread for you in emergency ... it might be moved to help needed non emergency ... but usually for such young squirrels it's a better place to be ...more supervision.....
i'm glad that you're in jackson ...i think we have tsb members there who will be able to help you with vet recommendations etc... (just in case)
as well i'm thinking you are using esbilac at the moment but unfortunately in the past year or so they've changed the formula and now they no longer recommend esbilac for squirrels.... (plus baby squirrels were getting sick)....
we have an amazing formula made by nick at fox valley that we use and i'll go and find you the contact address....
we also have a member here ... leigh who owns henrys healthy pets and she also sells the fox valley squirrel formula as well as squirrel supplies....

sundogdayze, do you have any sulfatrim or SMZ-TMP on hand? I would give this girl a dose for a week just in case. Cloudy urine can be a symptom of UTI, and you don't want it to get worse. It could also be protein deposits that have not digested properly (saw that on WebMD) and that could be due to the Esbilac. I would transition them to Fox Valley 32/40 for squirrels as soon as possible.
:thumbsup thanks IR...

Sqs are legal in florida...if you have a vet ask him to write a RX for the medicine Island Rehabber suggested..SMZ-TMP, sulfatrim, bactrim, septra {all generic names} It is a human childrens anti biotic, oral and sweet..
and can be filled cheaply at any pharmacy.
:poke We love pics...and we really love pics of baby sqs!:D

Hey, great that you are helping those guys out. We used to use the esbilac puppy milk replacer as a staple, but have since switched to the fox valley. If it is all you have, please make sure you are mixing it correctly with the cream and yogurt:
Esbilac mix (this is what we found after they changed it)
1c water
1/2c esbilac
1/4c heavy whipping cream
1/4c all natural vanilla yogurt
If nothing else, use jackies recipe - it works great!
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt
i think rescueo4 also used to let the mixture sit for a while/several hours (in fridge) because of all the bubbles ... (you don't want bubbles in formula cause that's inviting bloat)
(then you warm it back up to feed :D)

Thank you guys so much! I'm sorry it took so long to respond, it has been a crazy few days around here! My 7 year old daughter got sick, and then I found out that I am going to have another baby...a HUMAN baby. :)
Anyway, the same day I originally posted this, her urine ran clear again. It hasn't been cloudy since, although I am keeping a close eye on it.
I wasn't aware that Esbilac was no longer a good choice. I started raising squirrels about 9 years ago, and it was the best (only?) choice then. I will definitely be replacing it with your suggestions.
Anyhow, the babies are doing great so far. Still closed eyes, but bottom teeth are in. They already have their own little personalities, I love it. Thank you guys for all your help!
