Look in the forum for "List of Wildlife Rehabbers" (by state); there are several lists; I am sure you could find someone who can help Snaggle. I know Nature Girl has at lease one list.
:multi
Other 'great resource people are" Island Rehabber, Jackie in Tampa, Pierre, 4skwerlz, Rhapsody, and mugzeezma. All have invaluable advice to share here.

Snags is sort of tame. A lot of times I can go right up to him depending on how he's feelling. He will come when called by me. I have never picked him up. When he was at his worst before he broke off the tooth last time he came and sat on my lap ( I really thought he was going to die that day). Right now he's sleeping on a branch right outside my office window with a belly full of peanuts and ice water. I would assume trapping him would be easy but how bad would he freak once in a cage? I don't want him to hurt himself. I would hate to see him go but if it ment he would live it would be worth it. I would have no idea how to get him to Tampa and do his breed of squirrels live in Florida? If you want to see more of him and the rest of the family go to their FB page Bandit Squirrel Thornton. BTW there's a viedo of him there you would LOVE!

Jackie is the perfect angel for Snaggles....we just need to get him there.
If you trap him, have a dark cloth or towel on hand and IMMEDIATELY throw it over the trap. Keep him covered! It will calm him. If you can get some Bach Rescue remedy (at any health food store or good pharmacy) put it in a plant misting bottle with water and mist him every 15 minutes or so.....this will also calm him.

I just looked at a map. I am willing to drive to Toledo, Ohio, which is 8.5 hours one way from me to pick up Snaggle. I will be in Woodbridge, Virginia (outside of DC) on August 6, so I can get him as far south as Woodbridge, if someone can meet me there to take him on the next leg of his journey.
Depending on the timing, if he needs to spend a few days at my place he is very welcome.
If the situation requires it I know how to trim teeth (I do it every 2 weeks) and I've got an abundance of good healthy squirrel food on hand at all times.
Leave me know if my assistance is needed.

:wave123 Just please don't give him to any wildlife centre and/or rehabbers unless it is someone proved from TSB.
Squirrels with such teeth are considered non-releasable and are put down.
Let's try and see if we can work something out through TSB.

I have a wedding to photograph on the 6th that I must bE at by 4pm on the 6th. I could be in Toledo with Snaggle at 2 on that day. With that being said that means I have to trap him that morning. What if he does not show up? Some days he does sleep in :)
Do I get him the day before and keep him in a cage? I am new to this whole thing. I really don't have any idea on what to do. He's just this cute little guy that showed up in my yard one day. (Infact I used to be afraid of squirrels)
I am so glad I found this site everyone is SO helpful!
I am so going to miss Snaggle BUT it will be worth it to keep him alive and healthy!

I think I better clarify...I have an appointment in Woodbridge, VA at 8am on August 6, so I am leaving my house at 5:30am.
If Snaggle's route is going to be thru me, I would need to pick him up no later than August 4. After I pick him up, I need to drive home, which is 8.5 hours, so most likely, I'll only be getting home on August 5 in the very early morning, then I will leave for VA very early in the morning on August 6.
Since I am a marathon driver (IR can vouch for me!!) I would do the round trip drive to Snaggle & back home in one day. However, if there are any members in Ohio that would be able to assist it would be greatly appreciated.
I know we have at least 2 members in Ohio.
Would I be out of line to suggest trying to trap him as soon as possible? When he is trapped I'll start driving...this way we know we've got him and I can clip his teeth/tooth and make sure he's well fed for a few days (however many days it is before 8/6 and his next hand off). Just thinking out loud since we've got some time constraints.

I don't mean to be the one who asks ... for fear of being stoned to death :dono but has anyone thought about having that nasty ole tooth removed and then giving him back his freedom to run in the trees and be what he has been used to being?
I think is it awesome how quickly everyone has jumped on board to get him to a forever home, but does he need a forever home or does he need that tooth removed and set free once he is healed? I just don't know that freedom would even be an option in Florida since that is not normal stomping grounds for his species.
Maybe I am talking out of place and if I am then I will shut up. I am simply trying to think things through and possibly give little Snaggle the best of both worlds .... no more nasty ole tooth and still have his freedom.
I am not trying to step on anyone's toes. I think TSB is amazing and I love how eager everyone is to help a critter in need. :Love_Icon
EDIT: MM ... maybe Snaggle could stay with you and have his tooth removed. Then once he is finished convalescing he can make use of that release pen you have. Just a thought.

Another possibility...Detroit is a little over 3 hours from SR&BT in Perry, Ohio. She is a great rehabber and does squirrels all the time. I know she works some crazy hours and she is jammed packed full of babies right now, but if Snaggle can make it to SR&BT, I can pick him up there...(I owe her a visit anyway). This would save me several hours of driving and it would get Snaggle into the hands of an awesome rehabber fast.
OF COURSE, THIS NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED WITH SR&BT FIRST...I AM JUST SHARING MY THOUGHTS...

I would pick up a fair sized sturdy carrier - try to find something all wire so he can't chew out - and make sure the openings in the wire are too small to stick his head through. Fill it with a nice big piece of fleece or old t-shorts so he can root around and hide under them. I would trap him at least a day ahead of time - or two, so you make sure you get him. We will help you devise some soft, easily eaten food for him that he should like - heck, I will send some to you for him.
He will want a place to hide - even a small cardboard box in his carrier with some t-shirt pieces will work.
If you go to a health food store (many drug and grocery stores carry it now in their health food sections) you can buy some Bach's Rescue Remedy in a little glass spray bottle. It is an herbal calming agent that works topically. If you can spray a little on the bottoms of his feet he will calm down nicely in a few minutes. It is harmless and can be used as needed.

That was my initial thought, but then...what's going on with the tooth that the "bad" tooth is supposed to be meeting? If he has the "bad" tooth removed will a new issue be introduced? Maybe?:dono

That would be wonderful, EXCEPT for the fact that he is a Foxer and we do not have Foxer's in my area...well, there is one, but she's a Princess and she lives in a castle! :D

a sq without a tooth should never be released as his lower or upper opposing tooth would continue to growtinfoil
this sq will be NR DEFINATELY!

I was only asking questions. Obviously if Snaggle is not going to be able to released then my original thought would be null and void.
I didn't want to cause trouble ... I was simply asking since I would hate to see a him loose his freedom if at all possible.
I am sorry ... my inquiry was in the squirrel's best interest. I will graciously bow out of this conversation.

I do not think anyone said any date specifically yet. It just been brainstorming to see if and how we could get him to you.
I only mentioned the 6th because that is the date that I will be in VA, which is closer to FL than my home and we have other members that are in VA, which might be able to get him further south.

If you come to get her from me and someone brings her to me, I can babysit the squirrel for a little while here. How old is the squirrel? I can trim teeth. I don't really have vet care available and wouldn't be able to get anyone to remove teeth for me. I think if you remove any teeth, you will make the squirrel nonreleaseable anyways. I definitely can NOT take on any more nonreleaseables right now.
I do currently have a squirrel with pox, though :shakehead. This is my first poxy squirrel and I am working on setting him up his own private room to make sure no other squirrels end up with pox.

Thanks JIT. I thought you were upset by my questions. I didn't want to rock the boat but my mind was twirling with the thought of this little guy first being trapped (= stress) then traveling (=stress) then being captive in a strange place (= stress) ... Ok...we might have something here...temporary, but it will rectify the emergency...
Barbt - Could you catch Snaggle and get him to SR&BT in Perry Ohio...it's a little more than 3 hours from Detroit?
If you can, she is willing to babysit for a little and she can clip his teeth/tooth. I will drive to SR&BT's place and get Snaggle and keep him here with me and keep him clipped as needed until we can figure out how to get him to FL with JIT.
It's not the best solution as there are still some unknowns, but it gets the little guy on the road to a better life and will remedy that darn tooth until we can get him to JIT & her vet.
This is ONLY if the Rehabbers think and agree that this is the best course of action.

I'm confused now. If the tooth is removed Snaggle can't be released into the wild? If that's the case why not? I know so little about squirrels. I want to do whats best for him, and if there is any way for him to stay in the wild I know he would like that. By the way he is eating. I am giving him food he has put on weight, he look better than he has in weeks, it's just the tooth has started growing again. He gets nuts, peanut butter, dried fruit, and ensure. If I could catch him I could get him to Ohio on the 25th or 28th. I'm just real unsure on what/how to do this and would need help from all of you with it.

In order to keep their teeth at the proper length squirrels top teeth and bottom teeth must meet (like ours do) and then they are able to keep them ground down by grinding them together and by using them to chew on things to grind them down.
If you remove one of the bottom teeth, then that tooths corresponding tooth on top will have nothing to grind and will also grow to be too long and the same issue will occur again.
However, I am curious as to why it only appears to be one tooth. What is going on with the corresponding tooth? Is it missing? Which would explain the issue he is having now. Does he have a cross bite? If so, there should be another tooth that is too long on the opposite side and on top.
Squirrels use their teeth for protection as well as eating. They also use their teeth in building their nests (chewing/cutting branches). I think the question about the corresponding tooth needs to be discussed before it can be said with certainty whether or not he can be released with one less tooth. BUT, HE NEEDS TO HAVE THAT TOOTH CUT NOW OR RELEASE WILL NOT EVEN BE A TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION.

this type maloclusion will never fix itself...
if extraction is done...the opposing tooth will continue to grow and would need to be clipped every 3 weeks for life...if both the upper and lower matching teeth are extracted...chances are the other teeth will shift and we are back to square one with new teeth issues..
IMO...my honest opinion...this sq needs to be captive forever. That may sound sad to you, but there are a few of us who make sqs their life...I seldom leave home...I am a sq caregiver...a sanctuary for the ones that cannot be free...
very few peeps can take this type situation on... vet care is needed, good diet, proper housing...etc...
most do not want to get bit,.
wild sqs will sometimes get very happy in captivity...
good nutrition makes for a happy sq...outta cage time etc...
I have a house full of adults that I have taken in...everyone is great and love life.
It is not jail, it's a posh retreat!
the other option is to watch him pass...
he may get lucky and break that tooth, but then he may not...
and he is facing that scene every month forever...if he can get rid of that snaggle tooth.
hope this helps, I am not good with words.
EDIT....and a slow typer...Betsy is much faster!

That makes me feel better. If I can catch him I could get him to Ohio on the 25th or 28th. I'm just real unsure on what/how to do this and would need help from all of you with it.
Who would have thought fixing up a 3 legged squirrel would be so much less work. Now I wonder who's gonna show up in my yard next.

TP is in Southern Ohio, probably much further from Detroit than me, but probably more in line with a direct route to Florida.
The 25th works for me, I have the day off work :wahoo. Wednesday and Thursday I work, so the 28th will work, but I need a time so I can plan my sleep schedule :). I work 8 PM to 3 AM Wednesday through Friday then 8-4 on the weekends, so it will have to be before 7 PM if you don't come on the 25th or 26th.

I will have hubby take a picture of Tipsy's teeth but from how it looks to me she only has one upper tooth and both her bottom teeth seem to be fine. She once had a malloclusion with regular teeth trimming a necessity. She hasn't been trimmed since she left Anne's almost 3 months ago. Her teeth aren't any longer than Meggie's. I am not totally convinced that a squirrel with teeth problems will always have problems. I know some will, but what gives with Tipsy then? We've not done anything out of the ordinary for her teeth. There has been no medical intervention. I don't know ... it makes me scratch my head :thinking . I'd love to hear what a vet like Dr. Emerson would say about Snaggle's mouth.
Has anyone seen a tooth problem correct itself, with or without medical intervention?

I have not seen, but I've been told that young squirrels with a malocclusion may "fix" themselves after a trimming or two. However, I think that Tipsy & Snaggle are not within the "young" stage anymore.

Very, very strange. Tipsy is over 2 years old. I will hold Tipsy's mouth open and have Joe take a picture of her teeth. This way you can see what I am talking about.

I have offered to pick him up in Ohio, either Toledo or at SR&BT's house (SR&BT's is my preference, but I will go as far as Toledo) to bring him back home with me and then take him to Virginia with me on August 6 for someone else to pick him up. The someone else has not yet volunteered.
I believe we are trying to determine where in Ohio you are located, so it can be determined if there is someone able and willing to get him from you and further south towards FL. (see barbt's post above)

I have had to trap one of my releases a yr later because he was hurt. I trapped him 3 days before his appt at the vet. for the same reason, he was unpredictable on when he would show up. he did not like it but I kept his cage covered and threw in food that would fit between the bars. if you keep him in a quiet room he can be uncovered in the day time unless he is aggitated.. but tell your self it is for the best for him.. you can throw him nuts stuff you know he will like to eat.. it will be ok for the time he is with you. just do not put your hand to close..lol he will bite and it will hurt.. I know from experiance lots of it..hehehe good luck..mjs

I will need link(s) to what I need to buy (hope to rent or it's cheap) to trap and transport. Then how do I get him from the trap to the cage? I worry Bandit or one of the other guys will get in the trap and not Snaggs. Trying to figure that one out. My 16yr old son who btw thinks I'm crazy will help me make the drive. My husband just shakes his head. I hope to catch him a day or two before I plan to head out and keep the cage in my office so I'm sure I have him. Honestly, though, I think it is looking better and better that he may be headed in a more so direct route through TinyPaws and then southward.

Sunday, July 31
Monday, August 1
Wednesday, August 3
Thursday, August 4
Friday, August 5 (I MUST BE HOME BY 9PM AT THE LATEST ON THIS DAY)

Barb, maybe someone has mentioned this possibility regarding traps, but I'll post it just in case...
Back in Phoenix, there was at least one feed and pet store that would rent hav-a-heart traps out. They did require the cost of the trap as a deposit
(80$ for about a 4 foot long[?] trap in that case). The deposit was refundable and the rent a few years ago amounted to 5$ for the first day and 1$ for each additional, or something like that. Maybe there's something like that in your area. If you're looking to buy one, I know the tractor supply in my town has them for sale. You might be able to borrow one from a vet or a spay/neuter clinic. You could tell them you're trying trap a feral cat for spay and release. When you bring the trap back but don't have a cat for spaying, maybe you just haven't seen that darn cat anymore. :dono
Good luck. :)

Maybe I am crazy (actually there's no maybe about it:D ) , but if the squirrel is very friendly and used to being fed, would trapping it in a cage be possible? Many times with kittens I used a smallish cage and just put the food inside and sat with it. When the kitten entered the cage to eat I closed and latched the door. I like the process as it takes the whole transferring from trap to cage out of play.
Anyone else ever done this with a squirrel? If not, what is different about it than with a kitten outside of the obvious speed an agility issue?:dono

I don't know if I could get Snaggle in a cage. When I set out a new water bowl he freaks and it takes time for him to get used to it. It's not like I can pick him up. The only time I could pick him up was when he was very sick and was almost dead. Thats when I gave him some of my dogs meds. I'm not even sure how I'm going to get him in a trap.
Right now he's in the yard trying something new trying to break off the tooth!
I took half a walnut shell and put a dab of squirrel crack (aka peanut butter) in the bottom and he's going nuts tring to get it out. He's got that tooth in there just nawing away because it's the only one long enough to get the job done. With any luck it just might do the trick and by us some time.
I have to go do another photo shoot now and if he's in the yard when I get back I will check it out and report back to everyone.
Fingers crossed!

Ok I'm back. No idea how it went it's way to hot for Snags to be out to see it I was able to break his tooth with the walnut shell peanut butter trick.
BUT NOW I HAVE A WHOL NEW PROBLEM!!!!
The people I went to photograph told me out of the blue they found a baby squirrel in their yard that fell out of the nest 2 days ago and the mom never cam got it. It's sitting at the base of the tree in a carboard box in their yard. It's yuong doesn not have it's eyes open yet. It's moving around. I would think it only has a do or so left without help. They called around and nobody wants to do anything.
I told thim I would see if there was anything I could find out. Why do injured squirrels turn up on my doorstep? What if anything can I do?
The little thing has fur but does not have it's eyes open yet.

Take the baby in! If it has fur, give it some old T-shirts and (preferably) fleece to snuggle in and put it in a warm, dark, quiet spot. Get yourself a 1cc syringe (no needle) and make up some homemade Pedialyte:
2 cups warm water
1.5 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
a little apple juice or fruit flavored ANYTHING just to give it some taste....
EDIT: if the baby is pink -- no fur -- you'll need a heating pad placed under half the container he's in, set on LOW.
Drop by drop, get the baby to take as much fluid as you can. He must be VERY dehydrated by this time and dehydration will kill.
OK do that and then we'll go to the next step. :D

:peace coz good things happen to good people...
:poke sqs have a way of getting in your heart and yours was easy...:D
I agreee...get that baby asap!
:Love_Icon
If solo and with fur, I still use a heating pad as IR has mentioned, NO auto shut off, Walgreen $15ish.
Rice buddy...need anytype dry rice and a sock...very accepted by baby sqs as a cuddle/heat source used in conjuction with heating pad...
Will also need fresh goats milk found near cold milk in refridgerated section of most markets, Meyerburg is nation wide wonderful brand, if not, get canned next to evaporated milk at market...both are about $3-4 dollars...
small container of yogurt, any flavor, I use vanilla Dannon All Natural,
small container of HEAVY CREAM, next to half and half.
I like fresh GMilk best and it can be frozen into cubes and thawed as needed...
also a 1cc syringe without needle, also from pharmacy or baby isle sometimes....3cc syringe will work, but nothing bigger...no baby bottle/pet nursers...:shakehead
list~
heating pad
goats milk
dry rice
syringe
heavy cream
yogurt
plastic small container {the shoe box type is the smallest I recommend, I use the boot box size, as they will stay in it until time for small hamster cage....}
:poke OK girlie...get busy and save another precious fuzzer:Love_Icon
A rubbermaid tub {with holes drilled in lid and around tubs upper area}...
is better than a cardboard box, cardboard sucks the moisture outta them, causing more dehydration...they are fragile at this age:Love_Icon

I don't know if this will help you, but here's how I caught my wild squirrel . . .I used a Havahart trap. I tried both the smaller one made for squirrels where both ends of the trap open and the larger one made for coons and cats. The larger one only has one end that's open. I had my success with the larger one. I started out with the smaller trap and left the auto spring in place and caught every squirrel in my yard except the one I wanted, so I went to this technique with the larger trap and it finally worked. I worked for 3 weeks trying to catch my squirrel. So with the larger trap I disabled the spring mechanism so it wouldn't auto spring and catch the wrong squirrel. Then I tied a thin wire about 30 feet long to the trip mechanism. Test it to make sure when you pull on the wire the trap will spring. Then put the trap where you want it. Fill it with goodies, sunflower seeds, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanut butter, grapes, avocado. Make sure to put the food at the far end (by the closed end). I used a chair and placed it about 30 feet from the trap and wrapped the end of the wire around the arm of the chair so it was fairly tight and just a little tug would cause the trap to spring. Make sure and test it from that distance to be sure it will spring with just a little tug. If you leave the wire on the ground and try to pick it up and pull it when you see the squirrel, that might give the squirrel enough time to escape the trap. So now you have the trap set up. Then it's a waiting game. Think of the trap like a feeding station. I left mine set up that way all the time. I feed the squirrels anyway, so I just put all the food I would normally feed inside the feeder. That way the squirrels get used to going in and out of it. Then sit in the chair and wait. Mornings and evenings are your best times to catch a squirrel. When the right squirrel enters the trap, make sure it's in there far enough, tug on the wire and you've got your squirrel. Good luck and please keep us posted. :grouphug

Now I have an issue of catchin Snaggle and transporting him to Ohio. First my son has to have oral surgery this week so that puts everything out of wack. He will of course be fine but I'm going no where. And now with the new baby squirrel that also puts a twist in it. I'm trying to find a rescue toat will take him. As much as i would love to raise and release him I really don't know if I can do all that it takes. I will of course do whats needed till I find a rescue. I'm still working on breaking on Snaggles tooth and my husband is working on the sandpaper lined peanut butter fillled tooth gizmo that might help do the trick. So everyone cross your fingers for us!

I did this with a young wild squirrel that kept getting into one of my release cages. I kept food in it for my released ones, even left the nesting box in there. Sure enough, the little injured guy got in it and I locked it shut. He got in the nesting box, which made it even easier for me to treat him. I just shoved a towel in the hole, then took the box out of the cage, and treated him in the bathroom. After 2 weeks of treatment with antibiotics, he was on his way. :)
Having said that, not everyone has a release cage permanently on their porch.:D

Sanggle was in the yard today, still mad at me for trying to catch him would not even come close to me. Up side is his tooth is broken off some so it buys me time. Still trying to figure something out.

Tie a trap open and leave food in it for a few days so he can go in and out freely. Even putting branches or something over it to disguise it a bit might help. Having it tied open to get him used to it is the most important thing to do though. :grouphug

I think that is a great suggestion...Even maybe starting with putting food on the floor near the cage at first and each day move it closer, then putting it into the trap...It will get him comfortable being around it till finally he won't fear it or see it as something alien...Covering the cage with branches is good too as it will blend into the surroundings, but don't over do it because squirrels like to be able to see what's going on around them...

Yeah, that is always a problem when there are a group of whatever your "quarry" is! :sanp3 Just try to get him to come closer to you and you stay close to the trap.
Good luck!!!:grouphug

Anyone know if Snaggle's guardian angel is still looking to get some treatment/tooth extraction/trimming for Snaggle? Saw a post on Facebook that seems to show that he's (she's?) not out of the woods? Squirrel Train still being considered at all?

I sent your idea to her as a message on Facebook. Was trapping one of the issues here too? I wonder if the person leaving on the 25th (is that Fred?) could help with trapping if need be? Just a thought. Thanks for the info.:thumbsup
