Hello Squeeps,

I transported a few baby birds to a wildlife rehab center a few weeks ago and met the cutest, most adorable sweetypie of a flying squirrel ever. She was missing half her tail so they couldn't release her. I was disturbed by her living conditions so offered to adopt her (for Chickenlegs) but they declined and said she gets attention and is great for education and outreach with children.

It was mid day but at the sound of voices, she popped her head out to of the most pathetic tiny wicker finch nest. Completely awful for a flying squirrel and the worst is that there was nothing else in the cage!!! No perches, no fleece, no pouches, no wheel, etc. There was a dirty food dish at the bottom with what used to be a green vegetable but was unrecognizable and surrounded by fruit flies and the dish was full of sunflower seeds.

I almost grabbed the cage and ran. I was so upset that this cute friendly little one was living in such an inappropriate habitat that I made it my mission to get her a proper tricked-out cage. I found a wonderful cage on Craigslist and I have a few Crown Royal bags and pouches that Cocoa and Chip don't use. I am looking for donations of pouches, cubes, tents, perches, hammocks, corner hammocks, hanging stuff, food dishes, etc. What is most desperately needed is a wheel that is flyer safe, such as Wodent or Stealth but any wheel is better than nothing.

I'm also going to bring a selection of foods that Sugar should be eating, some educational lists, boo-ball recipe, etc. I want to be careful not to offend these experienced rehabbers but they usually release the animals and I sense they really have no idea what they're getting into with a captive flying squirrel. But I want her to have the best life possible.

So please friends, if you have something lying around that your kids have rejected, send it my way. PM me for my address and thank you in advance on behalf of Sugar (I know, a super creative name since she's not a sugar glider!)

Thanks!
Miriam

Thanks Jackie. I knew I could count on you. Will touch base via PM.

And I HAD to help. She looked so cute and lonely and providing her with a better habitat is more politically correct than squirrel-napping her in her terrible little bird cage.

Even though the rehabbers I met the first visit weren't very friendly and were too busy with their scheduled feedings to talk to me much or pay attention to Sugar, I was later assured that Sugar does get plenty of attention. It was partly the latter that made me worry so much but I kept reminding myself that they had baby birds and bats to feed and I was just interrupting their schedule.

Could you use some of the branches I make? Will they fit in the cage? Sent a picture so you could take a look.

Hi Jake,

What a lifesaver! I was just wondering what to do about perches and your branches are the perfect solution. They're beautiful too. Are they expensive to ship? I don't have a saw but I'm sure I could go find a branch in the woods and drill the hole and buy the hardware to make something similar. I wish I had a mini-saw. And a mini-wrench. And a mini-wire-cutter. All for squirrel purposes obviously :D

I like Nancy's saying about taking a village to raise a squirrel. You guys are fabulous.

Shipping is ok, I can use the flat rate box. I just have to bake some more wood and drill some holes. Let me know how many you want. They are all different sizes. Usually between 6-12". They have 3" hanger bolts, 1 1/2" washers and wing nuts for attaching.

You bake the wood? This is most interesting. I assume to kill of anything living inside? :dono

If you can fit three perches in a box, two corners and one that sticks straight out would be great. It's a huge cage and needs something in the corners, along the back wall....basically everywhere.

This is the cage BTW. The humans said they only had horizontal room but it is still two feet tall. Sugar will be the happiest flyer in Virginia.

Yes, baking them is to kill anything that might be on/in them. I also scrub them down before and after baking them. Bushy has had them in her house for almost a year and loves to pancake on them and jump from them. I take them out at least once a week and scrub them down. They all stick straight out. I also have a little fleecy hanging hideaway that Bushy can't fit her fat butt into so I will send that as well. I will bake the wood tomorrow and hit the hardware store for some hanger bolts. You can PM me your address and I will ship them to you when they are done.

What is the measurement of the door (or can the cage be opened to get a wheel in?)

it's a wonderful idea...
... my concern is... will these ppl actually let Sugar use all this great stuff, or will Sugar end up staying in her terrible conditions, while these rehabbers use all this gear as they deem necessary?... You know what I mean?...

I know stories of things and things having been donated for some orphans and such, who never actually got those things. The latter ended up being used either for the supervisors' private needs or for what they felt was more important.

Is there a way to kind of "adopt" Sugar so as to check up on her regularly?...

Since they have kept her in these conditions so far and were ok with that, they might not think it's necessary to upgrade her conditions...

Just wondering what kind of rehabbers they are... even if they don't necessarily "specialize" in squirrels, still there are certain basic concepts that do not require previous experience... such as, say, creating a certain habitat to target the animal's basic natural needs (a flying squirrel without a perch?... a squirrel "nest" without any nesting material?... )

Squirrel-napping to be considered...

Squirrel-napping to be considered...

LMAO. I thought all of these same things during the 1.5 hr drive home and wish I had just grabbed the bird cage and ran. I called a few days later to ask if they'd like to adopt her out and they said no but gave me some background.

She's a spring baby so probably about six months old and was living with another flyer in a cage with accessories that belonged to one of the volunteers who stopped working there and took the better stuff with her. Not sure if it's true but the nice rehabber did recognize that the cage was bare-bones and said she'd happily accept anything I could come up with as long as it fit in their small room.

It's supposedly a great wildlife rehab organization run by an actual vet. They have a great website but I was surprised to see how small the operation was when I got there. (Sound familiar seasoned rehabbers?) There were three women in one room with at least fifty cages and they were busily feeding orphan bats and birds. I know they take skunks, raccoons, possums, deer, squirrels, hawks and everything else too. I think they were just super busy when I got there (a Sunday evening) and that gave me sort of a bad feeling on top of seeing Sugar in the empty cage.

They usually release animals and I bet it hasn't quite sunk in that they are now responsible for providing a high quality of life and home for an animal on a permanent basis. When I saw the gross dish of food, while the bats were eating mealworms, I asked if I could feed her a few mealworms. They responded in puzzlement and Sugar happily took some mealies from me.

I've already packed a giant ziploc bag full of frozen wild foods to bring with me along with lists of foods and care information. I plan on forcing a pimped out cage on them for Sugar and driving out there periodically. I transport wildlife out there when the city rehabbers become overburdened so it will be an opportunity to check on Sugar. I certainly will be careful in my delivery because I don't want to offend them but she needs to be cared for properly. I'm very persistent.

And if it comes down to it, I will just grab her and run! :icon_devil

Pappy, the cage door is 9 inches which should allow for a junior stealth or wodent wheel. The cage lifts up quite easily, though so getting a bigger wheel in shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have some old larger wheel lying around. I have an old hamster wheel which should be safe for Sugar but I think it will have to rest on the bottom. Haven't sorted that out yet.

Jake, I'm learning so much about making these wood perches! And we will happily accept the pouch that Bushy can't fit into. You reminded me about my friend whose cat was so fat she had to back into her litter box. I always imagine the beeping of a truck in reverse when I think of this story.

I hope you'll be able to...:)

... it's just... I don't know... I understand that they are busy etc etc, but a food dish as gross and filthy as you described?.... they might be tight with resources and all that, but how hard would it be to put a box of tissues for her to make a nest?... These are such basics of the basics... ok, you can be busy and can't get to clean the dish today after her meal... ok, you weren't able to get to it the next day and the day after, but for how many days did they neglect that food dish to look like that?.... this sounds not just as lack of time, but neglect, improper care... and they say she gets enough attention?... I wonder how much and what kind of attention she gets if they can't do so much as at least wipe down her food bowl...

I hope, your idea will help improve her living conditions...
and if not... grab and run ;-)

:thumbsup Astra. Having just heard the story, you're going through the same traumatized trains of thought that I went through. Exactly the same. I was upset for days. I really am totally in agreement with you and think they've been plain old negligent. That said, I'm trying to be positive.

The urban wildlife rescue league I volunteer for has a close relationship with this rehab center so it's a dicey situation. And if I were to squirrel-nap Sugar, they know who I am and could potentially cause problems for me and my babies.

I'm not usually a glass half full person but this time I have to try to educate them on how to keep a flyer. I am hoping that once they realize how much work is involved in keeping a flyer responsibly, they'll change their minds when I tell them about the rehabber I know that would love to adopt her. Or perhaps I can tell said rehabber/flyer fanatic where to find Sugar and she can squirrelnap her, leaving me out of it. :icon_devil

You may or may not want to mention that the fact that she is missing part of her tail is no reason not to release her. It won't slow her down at all. She will learn to glide and jump and never realize that she's not just like the other flyers! Also, tell them that if they want to continue to use her for 'education', they will need to spend a LOT more time with her so that she will be tame and friendly with the public. By now she should be tame enough to stay in someone's shirt while they go about the business of cleaning or whatever they do.

I really suggest that when you go to decorate her new cage, you slip a little stuffed flyer in her new pouch and take Sugar home with you - it'll probably be weeks before they even notice!!!

Once again Muffinsquirrel, you've CRACKED me up and I never saw it coming. :bricks What a hilarious idea. And brilliant.

I wondered about them saying she was NR because of her tail but since I didn't know, I couldn't say anything at the time. I will raise the subject next time I am there...though a fancy new cage won't provide much encouragement.

You can all check out the website, it's quite impressive and professional, partly why I was so surprised at the situation.

This is the email I just got from the head of the wildlife center. I'm kind of frustrated. I could swear they told me they needed a long cage not a tall one.

Hi Miriam,
You are so nice to do this. The cage Sugar is in right now is 18 inches by 18 inches by 3 feet tall. I'm afraid we cannot fit a cage in our house that is 3 feet long and we want to keep Sugar in our reception area where she receives a lot of attention. I'm sorry the cage you found won't fit in there. The taller cage may be more fun for her anyway. She loves running up and down the log that is already in there. I'm sure she would love more toys and a wheel. Thanks for your help. If you can't return the cage you found, we can use it on the porch for other squirrels.
Thanks again, Belinda

I wrote a very long email sharing my concerns and received this email. It appears things aren't as bad as I thought, though those pouches were definitely not there when I was. And there were no twist ties on the cage door. And I don't recall the branches and the "basket house" is 2 inches. I'm relieved that she took the time to write back without just saying ":madd OFF."

Interestingly, the cage I'm offering is not as tall but only six inches longer than the stand she refers too. Am confused about next move to take. I think write a nice email back, collect the pouches and perches people are offering and take them out to the wildlife center with the cage, hoping she'll take it when she sees how awesome it is.

Hi Miriam,
First, I guess you didn't notice a lot things about Sugar and her cage. Those doors on her cage that push up are closed with twist ties (we've had a permanent flying squirrel resident before, and as a rehabber, I've raise lots of these little escape artists, and I also had one as a pet when I was growing up).
Also, Sugar does have a basket house hanging on the back wall of her cage about 2 feet off the floor that she lives in, and fleece pouches on the bottom of the cage that she like to put her food in. She has two logs positioned vertically in her cage at a slant that she climbs and chews on. The food in her cage was probably leftovers, She receives rodent block, monkey biscuit, whole nuts - we have acorns and hickory nuts in the freezer, chopped veggies, mixed seed (probably has some sunflower), and small pieces of fruit (hence the flies). We also give green branches to chew on. I do keep an eye on her diet because sometimes volunteers do not follow the ingredients in her diet book closely. And yes, Sugar is out of her cage frequently during the day.
I am not offended by your suggestions, just disappointed at the what you did not notice when you were there and that you think we do not take proper care of her.
If I could build her a cage for that room (and we probably can this winter) it would be 30 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 36 inches tall. That size cage would fit on the stand there.
Please don't worry about Sugar. We take very good care of her.

I'm thawing out the nuts for you and came up with a good idea. I'm going to bake the nuts that were frozen for just a few minutes to make sure they're dry before I send. That should really prevent mold from developing. The heat between DC and Tampa will ensure you receive a mailing of "roasted chestnuts."

:wave123 Friends! I wanted to give everyone an update on Sugar the poof-tailed squirrel. The lovely cage pictured above ended up getting used by the Hurricane Irene squorphans. The chocolate babies :D

The rehab center wanted a cage with specific dimensions so they got a cage and I finally got out to visit Sugar a few weeks ago to deliver all of the goodies. I actually surprised the rehab center so they weren't expecting me. In I swooped, ready to squirrelnap Sugar but really it worked out great. They were much friendlier this time and I was happy to see that Sugar's cage was nice and roomy.

They had stuck a couple of big branches in as well as a fleece pouch but it was still pretty empty. Apparently Sugar prefers to hang out in fleece at the bottom of the cage, where her dishes of food were...looking not so appealing. So I decorated! :wahoo

Sugar couldn't have been sweeter. It was bright and sunny and her cage is in front of the window but she came right out to investigate and was super friendly.

AAAAAAAK! I am SO in love!!!!! Since I brought my computer out of my--er--the girl's room, I have to use the laptop to get on TSB and the laptop is hubby's and he shares--but not enough. I mean--it IS his. Even so--how did I miss Sugar! Oh yeah--Sugar would absolutely dissapear into my bra--if I wore such things.

Trust me CL, it was tempting. She was sooooo super sweet. Perfectly named. The vet clearly cared about her and was asking me if I thought she was too fat. We had a nice conversation about what Sugar should be eating and also about her getting exercise and out of cage time.

I think the vet didn't want to quite admit Sugar, the "NR/educational" flying squirrel, needed to be treated as a pet now. She really was nice and gave me a mini tour and it turns out she is overwintering four flyers in an enclosure outside. I might actually bring Sootie out to live with them.

It was a good experience overall and admittedly, while I was fully prepared to take her if she was still in a bad situation, I was terrified of doing so!
