The Princess Scrat has had a problem with her eyes the whole time we have had her (she is 16 months old now) - when she wakes up her eyes are glued shut.. there is no ooozing, no drainage, no goopy stuff and no irritation around her eye lids. We have eliminated things from her cage one by one, thinking it could be an allergy- so there is no care fresh litter, no newspaper, no paper towels etc. just her blankies and a large wooden box (we have considered removing the box, it is partially made of plywood) The problem does not change whether we have pine cones, branches etc in there or not. It is not always both eyes glued...usually one or the other, but not always the same eye. Usually she will get them open herself eventually...but on occasion she can't and we have the help. I hate "helping" her because I don't know why they are glued shut or if there could be some dried matter there that could scratch the eye. I don't know if using any kind of eye drops would help or be safe or even what to use. I feel so bad for her because she is scared and blind if they are both shut...in the wild I think this would doom her.

Has anyone got any ideas on this? This is her only issue..she is healthy and active and doed not act ill at all. Since this has gone on for so long it seems to be nothing illness related...but it certainly is not good for our Princess.

I would be very curious to see what other's have to suggest about this also.
I do know plywood is pressed together with some type of gluing substance if maybe it is an allergy to that.

Do squirrels get conjunctivitis? This sounds just like what happens to humans when they get it (pink eye)...

if there is no goop and her eyes aren't red or do not have any indications of irritant...I would do nothing...
Fred my human and sarah his sq , both have sleepy eyes every morning...
you say it's always been like this...and it may always be.:)

Ronda, just a dumb idea but do you use Glade air fresheners or scented candles? My own eyes are super-sensitive to those things and will tear, and then get glued shut if I sleep in a house with them anywhere near me :shakehead. (Soy candles seem to be ok, but those Yankee Village things...omg)

I do have 2 Yankee candles in the room...and they will be removed immediately! Good thought! We will see if it makes a difference.
