Woo hoo!!! I just had my first Squirt sighting and I couldn't be happier! My little escapee was at the edge of our property and the woods, running around under the hammock. :D I went out to call him and he went up the nearest tree...not tearing away from me like his squirrel buds did, but not coming to me either. That's ok. :) He looks very healthy and very happy! I put some food out and I can see that I'm going to quickly become the neighbor that feeds the squirrels (as much as or more than the birds.) SOOOOO HAPPY!
Thanks again to those of you who have given me advice from that first syringe to his escape/impromtu release last weekend. You're all the best!

Sooo...can I take the cage down now? It's been 6 days since he left and he clearly has not been back at all. Thoughts???

Leave it for 1 to 2 more weeks. Be sure he has a nest to sleep in before removing it. Glad you got to see him:wott

Did you say he has squirrel buds? That's the best. Your little man is accepted as one of the boys. Very important for a singleton.

So glad your "baby" is having a wonderful time. I would leave the nest a little while, just in case. Are you sure he doesn't use it at night? Sometimes my new releases don't come back until later than I like. I usually go out after 10 p.m. or so and check by shining a flashlight on the box. Many times a little sleepy, yawning face will peek out of the box.:D If after a few nights of checking I would put it away and get ready for the next occupant . The next season will start soon! :rotfl

Fairly certain he hasn't been using the nest box at all, but who knows if he will now that he's back? I'm going to keep it available to him. I even got to spend some time with him this evening! He just came right up to me and climbed up my leg like it was the most natural thing to do. He didn't want to be pet or held, but he was very happy to take a couple of boo balls from me (and pellets which he promptly buried). I guess he's pretty content with his new life!
Getting teary seeing those pics. I'm getting ready to release my babies and am so worried for them. Makes me so happy to see that your little guy is doing so well. :)

He is a handsome boy. I would leave the nest box for at least a while. He may want to return closer to home. I am so happy he has made contact with you. And of course, remember to always have a fresh supply of boo balls on hand.:rotfl

Squirt is a cutie pie!! I so wish we had black squirrels here. You are not that far from me, but too far for the black beauties I guess!!

I have only seen a handful of black squirrels ever, and Squirt's possibly the only one I've seen around here. Makes him easy to pick out. :) He honestly sticks out like a sore thumb in the backyard! My neighbors & friends are amazed...many didn't even know they came in black. ;)
