There was a hurt squirrel in our yard. It just stayed still, or ran slow circles. I have him in the garage now, but he isn't doing well. He holds his head sideways, and seems very tired (dying???). I gave him some dog food, and tried to give him water through a syringe. I don't know what else to do until morning. I have a call into the local wildlife rescue. What could this be, and what should I do?
Thanks

hi: thank you for trying to help him.....

stop trying to feed him.... he might have internal injuries... and at this point if he is dying then giving him food or water won't help him.....

(and i do know how much it seems the right thing to do... it is hard ....)

where in nebraska are you ...near which city ... it's possible we have people near you that can take this little one....

if not... and he survives till morning then other rehabbers can come on to help you....

right now he need dark, quiet and warmth.... also it's night time ..they don't eat at night.

is the garage is totally safe ...no rats/dogs/racoons can possibly get in?

(rats would try to kill a squirrel especially if they know he's injured ..they're natural enemies).

do you have a heating pad with a non shutoff cord? ... if you could put that under half the box you have him in (i'm assuming he's in a plastic carrier?)

(by the way when/if he's feeling better he'll be able to chew out of plastic carriers....)

ok ..this is all i can think of right now....

(ps: if you have rescue remedy drops or spray it can be helpful to put a little bit on thier ears to calm them down)

pps: he needs to be on heat because his body is probably in shock and that makes them cold ... if you don't have a heating pad ... do you have fleece so that he can snuggle under it? ....

ppps: his bedding needs to be old tshirt type material ...nothing like towels they can break their nails/fingers.... when it catches....

and pppps: :D no dogfood.... i'm not even sure they can have it as a treat.....

maybe in the morning some apple... or blueberrys etc... but come morning others will tell you what to feed him/her....

Best thing to do at the moment is to keep him warm and try to give him water for hydration..... if he seems ok after becoming warm with a blanket and drinking some fresh water and there is no visible signs of injuries, then and only then, give him some fresh vegetable and fruit to eat.

Here is a list of safe food he can eat:

One thing I'd like to add is if you don't have a heating pad, please make him a rice buddy. Take a clean sock, I use my husbands white athletic socks, and fill with dry rice. Leave enough room at the end to tie a knot. You can then warm this in the microwave. May take 30 seconds to a minute. For the first few times, you can heat it for 15 seconds at a time, checking in between. You want warm, not hot. I take a piece of fleece fabric or t-shirt and wrap the rice buddy in it. Then place the rice buddy in the box with the squirrel. He can snuggle up to it or even lay on top. Will need to be re-heated every couple of hours. I would even use a rice buddy with a heating pad as long as there was plenty of room in the box to get away from the rice buddy but still be on heating pad!
