Wildlife Response, Inc (WRI) is sponsoring “The Effects of Oil Spills on Wildlife” , a Tri State Bird Rescue seminar on March 3, 2007. This day long course will cover the following topics:

CLASSROOM TOPICS
*The effects of oil on wildlife: illustrations of internal and external effects on wildlife, and basic treatment guidelines
*Initiating a response: a mock “response” to an oil spill. This will help identify key people, how the State and Federal governments are involved, and just how much is involved with a spill response.
*Special Considerations in Treating Wildlife: the effects of handling and captivity on wild animals, and disease concerns
*Non Petroleum Contaminants
*Treatment and Techniques for Non-Avian Species
*Oil Spill Jeopardy

LAB TOPICS
*Medical Care and Husbandry: handling and treatment, housing and nutrition, criteria for release techniques
*Cleaning and Rinsing Techniques

Wildlife Response, Inc will also be holding its Annual Wildlife Rehabilitation Seminar on March 4, 2007. This seminar satisfies the VDGIF criteria for Continuing Education for licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators.

This year we are excited to have Janice Hughlett from the National Opossum Society. Janice will be presenting a 3 hour long class with topics including everything from neonate care to diseases of the Virginia Opossum.

Additional sessions will include:
“You can lead a horse to water….” (Fluid Therapy & Techniques for Wildlife)
“Totally Tubular” (Nutritional Support and Gavage Techniques for Wildlife)
Other classes TBA.

We are happy to announce that the Virginia Living Museum http://www.thevlm.org/ is welcoming Tri State and Wildlife Response, Inc.

Where can I stay if I’m coming from out of town or just want to spend the weekend?
We will have a block of rooms reserved at the Country Inn & Suites

The cost of each room is a discounted $69.00 a night. Please mention "Wildlife Response" to get the discounted room rate. If you plan to stay Friday and Saturday nights you will get the discounted rates.


How much does it cost?
The cost of the Oil Spill Course for licensed wildlife rehabilitators is $75.oo.
The cost for the WRI Annual Training Seminar is $25.oo for non-members, free for members of Wildlife Response, Inc.

Tri State Bird Rescue brings raptors to festivals in my home area and it is awesome to see these birds so close up. Seeing the birds is the only reason DH and I go to the Chestertown (MD) Wildlife Festival. TSBR usually brings a Golden eagle, a Bald eagle, an owl or two, and a hawk. Where else can you get a chance to see (and sometimes feed!) these beautiful creatures closeup with out cages? The handlers are always so friendly and obviously love what they do.

I believe I took that course -- or one very similar to it -- at a NYSWRC conference a couple of years ago. It was SO interesting...and I have a newfound respect for Dawn dish soap as it is the best thing to use on oiled wildlife. :)

You are invited to the 2007 International Education Symposium of the
International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC). This year s
symposium promises to be better than ever, bringing full-day, skills-based
training classes to wildlife professionals like you.

Workshops will be taught by nationally recognized groups, such as the
National Wildlife Health Center, the Humane Society of the United States,
and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Course and
workshop topics include wildlife disease, fundraising, nutrition and
feeding, pain management, bat rehabilitation and more.

In addition, the symposium will provide many opportunities for you to
network with colleagues and ask questions of wildlife experts. For example,
you can get your questions about federal regulations answered by U.S. Fish
and Wildlife representatives during a panel discussion on Saturday.

The education symposium will be held January 18-22, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.

This course is an hour and a half accelerated course and lab in the selection and techniques of fluid maintenance in wildlife. During the lab portion avian, mammal, and some reptile specimens (deceased) will be provided. Gloves will be provided, however, please wear or bring a smock or other old clothing for the lab.


“Totally Tubular” (Nutritional Support and Gavage Techniques for Wildlife)
Another accelerated course and lab in the selection and techniques of nutritional support via gavage (or tube-feeding) for wildlife. During the lab portion avian, mammal, and some reptile specimens (deceased) will be provided. Gloves will be provided, however, please wear or bring a smock or other old clothing for the lab.

White Tailed Deer – Fawn Rehabilitation
Topics include: Natural History, intake, feeding, common and uncommon problems with captive fawns, reuniting techniques, etc.

New class of possible interest


The Opossum Society of the United States (OSUS) is sponsoring a beginning orphan opossum care training class in California. Hear about the latest recommendations. Subjects include laws, supplies, diet, medications, diseases/illness, wound care, restraint, housing, euthanasia. Speakers include OSUS President Leslie Bale and other experienced opossum caregivers. Newbies and experienced rehabilitators welcome.


Date: 2/25/07

Time: 8 am – 12 pm

Location: Hampton Inn in Garden Grove, California (Orange County)

Cost: $20 (both members and non-members)
