Our baby Richardson's ground squirrel Sophie broke one of her top teeth a few days ago, it seems to be doing fine now, but her other top tooth is now loose:( its being pushed back by her bottom teeth so she's having trouble closing her mouth right. We're not sure if we should cut it, pull it, or just leave it alone.... She's been a real grump when we've tried to look at it. Has anyone else had this problem? We just want our Sophie to be happy and healthy again.

I have not had any experience with ground squirrels. However, I would say like with most squirrels, if her teeth are causing her not to be able to close her mouth properly you should clip them evenly. I would aslo check her mouth to be sure that nothing else is wrong. Jaw? Lip? Tongue? Do you have a Vet that would see her? How old is she? What is her daily diet like? If you can we would love to see a picture of her. Try to get a close up on her mouth.
BTW :Welcome to TSB. Glad you found this sight. I hope there will be someone along soon to help specifically with your Richardson's gr. sq.

Sophie is 10 weeks old, no other injuries we can see. Her tooth fell out though:( it looks like it was broken off just past her gums, there's not any roots attached to the tooth, but it broke off inside her gums:( the vets here refuse to treat them, they're wild and considered pests here. she eats nifty nuggets from this site, http://www.pet-pro.com/prodindex.html, we we're told it was what she should be getting. She also eats fruits, veggies, and we still give her formula. She doesn't seem like its bothering her now, but we feel awful:(

Like I said , I don't know ground squirrels, but I do know rodent teeth. Watch her teeth and you may have to clip the one tooth as the other one grows to keep them even. That will be most important. If her teeth are too uneven they will prevent her from being able to eat and keep them ground down as she normally would. Even if the injuried tooth broke off below the gum, it still could be ok. Watch carefully for infection? Is she eating now? If it smells bad or red, swollen, pus, she will need antibiotics. I'll look up info on Rich. ground sq and see if I can help some. Also may need to post something like: I need Rich. groung sq.help and advice. I think other members here have them????
