Hi everyone, I did a search but didn't find anything like this so...

My approximately 4 month old NR male eastern grey suddenly, as in this morning, started urinating blood. I don't mean the urine has a reddish tinge. I mean there was a puddle of bright red blood.

I've had him for about 3 months, came into rehab orphaned with the rest of his litter. Non releasable due to severe jaw misalignment. Also had no use of his front leg, although that has resolved.

Because of the tooth issues he eats ground rodent block mixed with either water or fox valley to make a gruel. He also eats chopped green beans, broccoli, tomato, etc sometimes he gets a tiny bit of strawberry to gnaw on.

He lives in a 4' high cage, 3' wide, 18" deep. He has plenty of shelves and branches to climb on, has never fallen. Comes out only when I'm here to supervise, didn't get into anything or been attacked by any animals.

I can't imagine an animal this young having severe enough kidney or bladder stones to cause this much bleeding, although I suppose its possible. There has been no trauma that I know of, no reason to suspect anything is ruptured. And there is no visible bruising on his abdomen to point to trauma. He complains when I hold him still and examine him - but that's normal for him, and it is his normal vocalizing not anything higher pitched or louder or longer to indicate he's in pain. A UTI rarely shows up with that much frank blood. So I'm at a total loss!

He was his normal self this morning, leaping onto me and using me at his tree. Ate breakfast normally. Poop is totally normal too! Normal color, formed normally - no vomiting that I've seen. He just ate a few bites of lunch then went back to bed, which is odd for him. But otherwise, no obvious symptoms.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I suspect at this point I'm looking for a vet to euthanize him, such a rapid onset and such severe symptoms are not a good sign usually. Is there anything I've done wrong to have caused this?

Thanks for any help :(

Has he done this again? Or was it a one time deal?

Has he eaten acorns recently?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Some foods can color their urine and when I say color, I mean like deep red. Right now I KNOW I could walk out on my deck at home and find a small puddle of what any CSI would tell you is blood congealing. It isn't, it is squirrel pee...

No, he doesn't eat nuts. He has no ability to chew with his front teeth, and I don't crush nuts for him.

The cage bottom has bloody urine on most of the paper, and there was a small puddle of bright red blood.

Would almonds cause dark red urine? He has had unsweetened almond milk mixed with his ground up rodent blocks - but usually only one meal a day as a treat.

If there is any possible chance it could be a UTI he needs to get to a vet immediately... We have encountered this problem before, here on the board, and there have been some grim outcomes. I would hate to see this happen to your baby! Do you have vet access?

Wow.. I have NEVER heard of or seen this!!! Is it just certain breeds? Which foods can cause this, just so I know in the future.

The tannin in acorns colors the pee a deep red - in the Fall, and right now when they are still eating the nasty, moldy ones from last year, the pee is really dramatically red.

That does not sound like this though. If a vet is available, I would definitely have the urine looked at.

Is he still peeing red or was this a short term thing? Any other symptoms?

I'm trying to get an appt for him. He's a little more subdued than normal, he urinated again and it was more of a blood tinged urine, not the bright red blood as before. Still not normal though.

Thanks for your thoughts guys

ck his digits, when they cut a finger, it can bleed alot...a big puddle.
I am hoping it is not urine output...

If you know what he has eaten and nothing new was fed...I would push fluids...moniter his urine output, keep him calm..

how is he today?
alot of foods do tint the urine.

To test if it is blood, pour peroxide over the spots. If it fizzes it is blood if not it is something he ate. Kale will color urine red and large doses of calcium will also do that.

Well we suspect it was a bruised bladder, possibly he landed wrong during one of his flying leaps. It was most definitely bloody urine, but by yesterday he was acting completely normally and I pushed a lot of fluid and this morning he had normal urine. I will of course continue to watch him but he seems to be much better.
:thankyou everyone!! :)
