Mary, Jodie, Mandie -- anybody? My neighbor found this baby (sparrow?) on the sidewalk just now. It is gasping and has been for the past 15 mins....is there ANYTHING I can do? Is that a huge hematoma I'm seeing in the belly, or am I just bird-ignorant?

That baby looks like a newborn and I have heard their bottoms that looks like that after they hatch. You cannot give baby birds water from a syringe they can drown. You can feed them dry dog or cat food soaked in warm water until it is very mushy, soggy. almost like a thin puree. You can gently rub his bottom to make sure he is going to the bathroom. Their bottoms can look like that when they are blocked up.

That's all I know from my bird rehabber friend.

I'll PM you her cell number and you can call her.

I forgot to mention that they need to eat every 15 -20 minutes from sunrise to sunset. (And we thought pinkies were bad)

Thank you everyone for your help. RIP tiny one. :sad

I am sorry I was not on, had bad storms here, so shut puter off. Yes, that was a hematoma and there was not a lot you could have done. Baby birds that young are VERY HARD, have to eat every 20 mins from sun up to sundown initially. RIP sweet little one.

:grouphug Poor baby!!! Next time call or txt me. This one was at it's end but ya never know about the next!!!

Yeah I got 11 ducklings...the mom had been hit...she gave them a huge bowl of water they all half drowned...were chilled b.c she didn't give heat even tho I said to.. They all died that night except one...I started antibiotics and everything. I named him booger and carried him around in my bra sure he would die... And he is alive and isn't the best eater...and now he has a robin for a snuggle buddie!

Birds....shudders....

So sorry to hear the little tyke didn't make it. They are nearly impossible to save at that age even if they come in healthy, so trying on one that is that banged up and already gasping is even harder :sad.

The dark purple is a hematoma. The bulge was normal for a baby bird though.

I have learned so much in the past 12 hrs from all of you terrific people. :bowdown Next time -- and there is always a next time -- I will be better prepared to act, if there is a chance that it's not too late. :thankyou :grouphug :thankyou

I will pm you the diet you can make to feed them and instructions. Ones that tiny are so hard but you may get one a little older and have more luck.
