I am hoping someone can help me find a bird rehabber in Colorado. Found a sweet baby robin who seems to be holding his own after being attacked by a crow, but our neighborhood is a very rough place for baby birds. There is a hawk who nabbed one last Friday (different nest; babies I had watched fledge days before). We also have neighbor cats who are pretty brutal. There used to be a great bird lady nearby, but I don't think she is around anymore. I have limited transportation don't drive, no car), and am already overwhelmed with what to do rehabwise for Butchie and Joey. This one should be with other babies for the best chance, I think....
Pictures of baby Chance last night; I was trying not to stress him/her. Rescue Remedy used for severe shock when I first brought this one home (details later). Arnica given in case of internal injuries, Surprisingly didn't appear hurt just really shocky to the point I didn't think this baby would make it the short walk home (several yards down from where I live),

Appetite is good; I have Chance half on a heating pad. Eats worms sometimes the canned cat or soaked cat/dog food. Prefers worms, smart baby, lol, but I am not as efficient at catching as Mom and Dad are.

Hi, sdreamcatcher, You are doing great with what you are doing. If you wanted to keep to do yourself we would make a few changes but for awhile , you're great. You can buy small meal worms at pet stores. Also they come in a can called appropriately "Can-O-Worms. At Pet Co/Smart. Almost $5 for a smalll can in the reptile section. Worth not digging worms. They love them. Also have Can-O-Crickets, etc. You should feed about every 1 hour, I think. Not sure on time. keep warm, for sure. I,ll check back later. Others know more about birds. I trained, have Fed. permit but did not renew. I don't do birds. Lucky for poor birds. :rotfl So I am rusty with info.

Little Chance is eating well after a bit of a slow start this morning. Apparently I am somewhat fit to feed, lol. Yes about every hour and worm digging doesn't bother me (I was the kid running around with a flashlight at night getting worms for frogs and toads, lol). Bugger went through almost 50 little worms. Half on half off the heating pad as he (?) was fluffed a bit last night and seemed to be more comfortable after warmed up.
I don't mind the raising part so much, just the release part. As I mentioned, I seem to be right smack in the middle of cat/hawk/crow country. Usually the crows keep the hawks in check, but right now the crows are busy raiding nests as well. Didn't think they would try for one this old (close to fledging). Caught one trying to raid the nest of the pair next door who lost one baby to a hawk last Friday. They are starting another nest, so hopefully there wasn't anything/anyone to take....
Mom found me out digging in the garden and suggested I start find vegetarian critters to rescue!!
Chance seems well, except when excited he or she sometimes appears to have balance issues? Other then that, great appetite, very alert, chirps before and during feeding, seems content considering being in a new alien environment (my birds all get super quiet while Chance is eating/chirping, so funny!!).
Are there bird rehabbers on this site? Nearby state maybe? I just think Chance would benefit from other baby robins and a safer neighborhood. Last time I raised and released baby robins was before hawks moved in and when the neighbors had only two or three cats.....
Pictures. Taken after feeding; explains the contented look :) :

Try "Starling Talk" LOTS of bird folks. Um--as I recall, backyard worms can transmit "gape worm." As I recall not supposed to feed caught worms to rehab babies. Guess Mama bird hasn't red that bit of info--or maybe she processes out anything bad for her baby. Dunno.

Hi Jackie, Did not see post with your question. Sometimes at night I don't get past p. 1 on the thread list. LOL. Yes the master license includes the necessary training to get Fed permit. Also RVS certification for state license. I took the IWRC classes and tests for Basic Rehab A/B and Advanced Mammal Care. Now the rules changed in MD . You are not required to take those 2 IWRC classes or tests. MD DNR figured out they could not require 100's of dollars in classes, out of state, to "let" people volunteer for free. Plus spend own money to do rehab of animals.:rotfl Smart thinking , I say!:D Now you do have to train with a master class rehabber for a mandatory 2 year period. No test though! You do have to take classes each year to renew license. 6 hours each year. Just sit and listen to lectures for a day. Get to see friends and talk Rehab. A good day, really. :alright.gif

Hi sdreamcatcher, How is baby bird? He looks great. Did you call anyone to help? I'm sure a rehab would take for you. Just don't mention the other you know what's. Some rehabbers not real cool about stuff. I think there are a few members with current skill with birds that could help. I can... but will have to study up a little. I did have robins last year though. I only take birds from friends anymore. I refer birds to others if I can. He really is close to fledge. Another week or 2 really. I'll look up the members with bird experience and PM in the morning for help if you like.

I sent your post to Jodi (psychobirds). I don't know anyone out there, but yes, I would go on Starling Talk and see if there are any members out that way that could help with release. You are doing right with feeding and heat (but yes, you should pick up mealworms, live ones). You will need to get a retarium to keep him in soon, as well, if you are going to raise him yourself.

Thanks pappy, So glad to get some real bird people here to help.
sdreamcatcher, I have heard good things about the Starling Talk site. I had forgotten about it. (That's why we need help!:rotfl )Maybe we can find someone for help with release. Look at that site. Not sure of exact correct address or link, but you will find it with Starling Talk words/name. If no help there I wll keep looking too. Chance is a Q-T-Pie. Looks so sassy and sweet.:Love_Icon

Thank you; I will look for that site. I am hoping the members are as willing to help as here? I am a bit concerned about the way he holds one of his wings (he, for the sake of argument, cause I hate calling living beings it). I would be worried a rehabber might deem him unreleasable and euthanise?? I think the crow pulled him out by his wing; he was upside down with wings spread and gasping when I picked him up. Honestly didn't think he would make it through our gate let alone inside.
He is eating earthworms, also some soaked dog/cat kibble. Doing well, very "chatty". Wonders where his family is i am sure, though seems calm with me and has accepted my feeding him.
Will post more later, computer acting funny.... Oh and will get pictures updated. Had some plumbing issues so am way behind on picture taking....

Quick update -- I did joing Starling Talk and they have been helpful. Looked up info on gape worm, scary. I may switch him to just soaked kibble. He looks pretty good, nice and active, pretty alert, sweet baby :D.
I took him into a room, spread out a blanket and let him come out. His right wing does not move at all. I thought I had seen him stretch it once (he stretches his wings sometimes when he sees me coming). I don't know if that will change with time or not? But if he is deemed non-releasable due to his wing, wouldn't they euthanise? What other options would I have? He did hop onto my hand once, acted a bit spooked once, and chirps to me often. Just going slow with him, and talking to him a lot, which he seems to like :).

:wave123 Yes they might euthanize him. Robins are protedcted under the Federal Migratory Bird Act . You need a Fed permit to have them. If you have a Vet that you know really well, you might call and ask them to see if they could just see what is wrong with his wing. When he shakes his wings begging for food, does he use that wing? You could wrap it with gauze strips and Vet wrap. You can get that Vet wrap at Petco, PetSmart. etc. Not just the wing. Wrap round his body and under the other wing to keep it stable. Not too tight. Really not sure what to do. I will look up info or ask someone here to help us. When I looked at the pictures he didn't seem to be holding a wing funny. Just can't tell. Can you do short video of him tomorrow? I have a Fed permit but I have not done birds for a long time. I'm rusty. Really need to keep up to do right. I will ask some others to look at this thread. My friend has a pet robin. He loves her. He is 7 years old. He sits on her shoulder every night to watch TV. She whistles that robin sound that they make and he will answer her. When she turns out the light to go to bed he makes a soft whistle sound to her.:Love_Icon She feeds meal worms and blueberries, bug dust,. insect dust. (YUCK) I'll find out what else. I haven't bird sat for her in a while. I know he loves all kind of stuff. Also there is a diet called FONS diet. I will look for it and send/ post tomorrow for you. It is better for birds because they need the right nutrition so legs don't get bent as they grow or so they don't get MBD. More tomorrow. I think the Starling Talk site has that FONS diet listed too. Night, night!
