I live in Queens and just now I noticed a squirrel sitting on my living room window ledge. i live on the first floor. I quickly backed up. I didn't want to scare it. The area its in is kind of quiet and calm but I am worried about the neighborhood cats that like to come to my window at all hours looking for my cat.

Something is obviously wrong with it. it looked at me and moved its head. Doesn't seem weak just kind of laying down with its head up.

Please help this poor baby.

Someone will be on here soon.

I looked at it again and its lying down poor baby. But it saw me and got scared so I hid again. Doesn't look like a baby or an adult. maybe in between.

I posted here a few years ago because i had found two newborn squirrels and i gave them to a rehabilitator in my area. I forgot her name but she was so sweet.

She use to release them in central park. I wonder if she is still around?

I'm not sure maybe an injured leg? It seems alert though.

I am trying to take pics but its to dark. My living room window faces a garden area that has walls surrounding it. It's in a calm place. And it's a locked up area. Just concerned about the cats though.

I'm going to the supermarket right now. What can I buy for it? Walnuts or peanuts? Almonds? Should I put a little bowl of water?

i have just sent a private message to someone who might know a few ppl in the City.
Please keep checking here.
is the squirrel mobile?... if she cannot move, do you think you could take it inside?...
If she can't move, you can slowly approach her and cover with a plastic bin, then slide a piece of cardboard underneath and gently carefully turn the bin so that the squirrel is on the bottom.
or, maybe, you could try and gently pick her up (just use thick something, or gloves, just in case it bites)
Because if she cannot move, she will become someone's food overnight.

hi Jen....it is very unusual to see a squirrel out at night so something is definitely wrong. Is it possible for you to put a small box (shoebox?) out there for him to crawl into for protection? He really needs to be in a nest of some kind....
At this hour I can't really call anyone but will PM you with some contacts closer to you in Queens.

walnuts and almonds are better. no peanuts.
Yes, she needs water more than food, probably.
You could put water in a shallow dish, with some pebbles on the bottom to prevent the bowl from being overturned accidentally. Pebbles might also help prevent accidental aspiration (even though she is not a baby, it can still happen).
You could give her avocado (no pits, no skin!), apple slices, pieces of watermelon.

Agree with everything IR posted; very unusual, something must be wrong. If possible to catch it with a towel, put it in a box in a quiet, safe indoor spot overnight until you can locate somebody to help tomorrow.

hi Jen...unfortunately you have your account set to not receive private messages, so I can't send you one...
There are no active rehabbers in Queens anymore at all, but we can try to work out something. In the meantime I will email a few people tonight to see if they might have some space for this one. Check back here in the morning if the baby is still there and let me know if I should continue to pursue...

I can't get it. The ledge is thin and my windows have safety rails. I have no way of removing them. It will just cause more commotion. I just checked again and the poor baby is curled up. has its tail covering its face. Looks like its going to bed. Gonna go get the stuff at the supermarket. I'll stay up all night and keep the predators away. I promise.

The woman who got the baby squirrels from me some years ago was from Manhattan.

How do i activate my pms?
click on User CP - upper left spot in the top menu bar.
It will bring you to "your" page.
Look on your left - boxes with options,
Find Edit Options.
It will open up various options.
Scroll down and find Activate Private Messages (or something like that).
That should do it.

EDIT: at one point not so long ago newly registered members didn't have private message option available to them in the beginning. I am not sure if that changed. So, try to active it as I described above, and if it became available for new members again, that should activate it.

You're very kind to try to help this little one. You're right, you don't want to scare it off the ledge, where it might be in more danger. Sadly, not much you can do tonight. Squirrels sometimes seem to know where to go for help. Hopefully, tomorrow more can be done.

Sometimes a young squirrel will be finally chased from mom's nest when she is ready to give birth to a new litter. Hopefully this squirrel isn't injured, but is just a teenager with no place to go tonight...

I have two living room windows connected to my kitchen window. The squirrel just jumped a little bit to my kitchen ledge. It was standing on its back legs sniffing my window screen kind of trying to get in.

Then it jumped back to the other ledge. Doesn't seem to have a leg injury. What else could be wrong?

I think you're right. It's definitely not an adult and not a baby either. It's so cute.

hmmm.4skwerlz's theory is starting to look promising. Poor kid got booted out of the nest and needs a place to crash.....:tilt squirrellovernyc, can you give him some shredded paper towels thru the window? They love to make nests with those....

I have good news and bad news. The good news is the squirrel isn't injured and I think 4skwerl'z was right. I tried to sneak some almonds and it went running and hopped over the gate. Then it stayed on a ledge by the gate for a while.

Then came back and tried jumping on my window ledge again but it couldn't It was too high and it was probably tired. It started looking for the almonds on the ground.

I threw a bunch of almonds on the grass and left a little cup of water on the ledge.

I have a feeling it will be back.

It hope it comes back. It's so cute :rotfl

Good he or she eats. Get a haveaheart trap and relocate him/her. They have no home so relocating him or her should be easy.

Haven't seen it again. I think it will be fine. There are alot of houses and trees and grassy areas here.
