amazing reunion

Last night, I was brought a baby squirrel by the neighbor who said that it was "slow" and couldn't climb. I posted on another thread, with a few questions. Anyway, I put the baby in the outside cage this morning with a box for shelter and food, ec ec...and have watched him all day. I noticed a few hours ago another squirrel on the cage and the baby was trying to nurse through the cage, the mother was trying to find her way in. When I went out, the mother squirrel ran from me and went up a tree, but when I returned inside, she returned to the cage and again the baby trying hard to reach her. after watching for a hour, I concluded that this was in fact the little ones Mama.
Of course, I know that the nest spot isn't the best place for the mama or her babies, (neighbors attic), but I just couldn't watch that mother run around trying to get at her baby....finally , I went out, and like before, she ran up a tree, but I took the baby out and placed him on the ground. He took off in the direction that she ran from, and then I saw her run down the tree to greet her baby.
It was obvious though that the baby was still nursing and so I feel good about my decision. Even though the nest is in a very dangerous part of the world with shooting teenagers.

And they really love their little ones, too. After baby season is time to close up that attic and make sure they do not get in again. Attics are bad juju.

Yeah, I could tell that this Mama only wanted her baby. I had nuts in the outdoor cage, and so the first few times that I went out, I put out more nuts where the mama could eat them, just incase it wasnt' Mama and just a squirrel wanting to raid the nuts, but she showed no interest in any nuts at all, only the baby. That's when I was positive it was Mama.

I almost cried when I read about the Mom trying to get to her baby and couldn't! I'm so glad they are reunited! Bless you! :D :D

So glad the reunion went well. Anyway you could appeal to the young girls how strong the bond is between this mother squirrel and her baby. Letting her know that she herself will most likely undersand this bond when she has a baby. She would really always remember her cruel act when she herself understands the Mother and child bond. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon
Great save on the reunion.. Also they (squirrels) will likely be leaving the attic soon as the hot weather comes on this summer. It will be cooler out in the tree tops in a drey and they know that so they will vacate on their own.
