My 3 knotheads were released and Little Girl has made a nest near the house now-her 2nd one in only a week or so...anyway, she was waiting at the cage when I got home this evening (only the 2nd time thats happened)and when giving her a treat I noticed that she has red bumps on her tummy, under her arm pits, and near her neck. They are fairly small, most being only a little larger than a pin head. I noticed several that have white heads on them, and several look like tiny nipples but red around them?
I'm thinking the ones with the white heads could be ant bites...but the others I'm a little concerned about. There are lots of mosquitos out right now, and the pox and bot flies keep coming to mind. I looked under pox, and these sores look NOTHING like pox in the pictures...but I'm wondering if it could be early stages of either?
I have felt all over her back, and can't find anything there. She is missing a bit of fur on the top middle section of her tail. We're not sure why.
She's around 6 mths old and is sitting on my shoulder as we speak. I brought her in because ....ummm....she's afraid of thunderstorms.... :) Everytime it thunders she jumps into my shirt!
Anyway, I'm probably just overreacting, but wanted to ask to be sure...I'm letting her back out tomorrow bright and early! She's having to battle over her nest from what I can tell...4 annoying little monster sibling squirrels I'm guessing-must be just old enough to be running and tearing up the neighborhood...won't leave her alone! :shakehead :D

I think it sounds like ant bites or most likely mites or lice. I would let her stay in a few days and let her feel better. She sounds like she could go down hill fast and needs some extra time to become strong. She may even need some Benedryl. JMHO. You know her best.

Hi Tara :wave123
Be for releasing them Did you treat them with Revolution? Can you get a few picture so we can see what is going on! Can you still handel them?
Are there any red bumps on the back or sides? Your probably right about ant bites. Just keep a close eye on them so it does not get infected.
Good luck. :thumbsup3

I added a few pics, but they don't show up very well. The one sore is from a cut she had on her first day of release. It isn't a bump or bite.

Sorry for the delayed response...I've been itching since I first read your post! :) She seems okay, she's still asleep in my shirt. I took a few pics, but I have a terrible camera (and the user has NO idea how to take pics properly-myself). Anyway, I don't have any Benadryl, but can get some tomorrow morning if needed. She's a little "extra" loving I guess. A little jumpy, but we had a storm. It's passed now. Thanks for helping! Wondering if I should order some ivermectin...???Don't have access to Revolution if it's by script only...

Thanks Christal! What's it look like to you? Can you tell ANYTHING by my pics? I wasn't zooming...IDK...
I can still hold her. I haven't seen the other two in several days now :shakehead. I miss my little knotheads! :thankyou

She may have parasites, so treating her with ivermectin (a teeny drop the size of a notebook paper hole) might get rid of it. They could also be ant bites. Poor baby.

spider and ant bites both have white heads at first...
spider bites will ulcerate , ant bites will drain and scab...

So that would mean that the meds wouldn't get rid of them anyway, right? Poor baby. She acts fine. She's not scratching alot or anything noticably different than usual. The spots don't seem to bother her. She will let me give her a good rub down though, and she'll still put those arms back for me and close her eyes. Last night, she even let me check her entire body! :) I love it! My little sweetheart! :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

She wanted outside this morning, so I let her go. She's out there playing in the trees. She needed some rest. There are little juvie squirrel monsters out there everywhere and keep taking her nests away! She won't go into her nest box...so I'm not sure what to do about that. We heard her the other day giving them a great big fuss in her nest! Last night I'm not sure what she was going to do! She was just lying beside her cage, and it was almost dark! I couldn't leave her there, and when it started to rain on us, she was ready to do whatever I did. :)

Can you check the NestBox for Ants? :thinking Are you around FireAnts? It is possible they are ant bites. If you don't see any more on her sides or back.
She might have laid on them and took off. When I released Rocki. She would dig the Fire Ants up. Fleas can also show up as red spots if allergic.
Same with mites. (But the bites would be all over her.) If you have a dog and use Revolution for Flea control. Just put 3 drops on her.
Then use the rest on the Dog. Some Squirrels and Dogs Can get a reaction to Poison Ive and Poisons Oak. This is the perfect time for it.
If you start itching and braking out, then that would be my guss. :D
Hope she get back to normal soon. :thumbsup3

---this was an edit...I obviously put it in the wrong place...lol! edit:::: oh...and she doesn't go into her cage and nestbox anymore, so it's not coming from that.
Thanks! We have fireants-and it would make sense that she may have laid into a bed of them somewhere. There are alot of dead trees that they like to dig in and roll. That could be it. We also have lots of poinson ivy and oak. We have carpenter ants too-the big black ones that eat big holes in trees! I'm not sure if her main problem is ants, spiders, fleas, mites, lice, or something else.

She's been out all day and coming in the house at night to sleep. She's scratching a bit more and I've seen two fleas...hard to see through all of that fur! Her main bites are under her arms and legs. When feeling with my fingertips, they seem bumpy and dried/or crusty feeling. There's no flaky skin that I can see. There are white bumps too.

I don't have Revolution, but could possibly get some, but it would be for a large dog. Is that a big risk?

Also, I was searching and saw that some use Adams. Spray or powder best? I saw that they sell it at our walmart, IF it's it the right one. The picture shows blue spray bottles or blue and white boxes. There's also a $5 off coupon on their website-IF I'm talking about the right product. :poke :dono

Finally, I read where I could bathe her in Dawn dish detergent. I have that here, and it would treat her temporarily I guess. I would have to do that in the morning before I let her out. It's too cold in here to put here through that tonight and she's already in her bag asleep.

Oh, I also read where someone wiped their squirrel down with white vinegar. I have that here too.

So...what does everyone recommend? It seems to be bothering her a little bit now. OR should I just use Cortisone for the itching? And if so....what kind? THX!!!!!!!

Revolution is all the same strength - large dogs just get a lot more of it. I would definitely put a couple drops between her shoulders - will take care of the fleas, too.

Okay, I just sent a message to a friend to see if they have any. Crossing fingers! I saw her complaining about it on FB-she's been using it for her dogs. Hopefully she'll have some left!

I didn't realize it was all the same strength. I thought I was supposed to get it for cats/kittens. LOL! I'm in my own little bubble...hahaha! Sorry about that!

:wave123 Tara, Yes, as CritterMom has said Revolution is best, and as per her instructions on dosing. Is your squirrel scratching alot? Itchy? If you think she is miserable, she can have Benedryl. PEDIATRIC ORAL SUSPENSION not ADULT, How much does she weight in grams? I can dose if you need help or even think she needs it. It is a mild tranquilizer, also. Use only Benedryl with only the ingredient diphenhydramine. I hope she is better, poor baby.:Love_Icon

I'm waiting to see if I can get any of the Revolution! Hopefully someone will have a little to spare. She's scratching more today than usual. She doesn't seem miserable at this point, so I think I'll wait on the Benadryl. I'll keep that in mind though, just in case it gets worse. Last time I weighed her I think she was almost 1.5 lbs, but that was a while back, and she's been outside getting lots of exercise since then. If I think that she needs the meds, I'll reweigh her and ask you for the correct dosage. She's probably lost some weight! Thanks for your help and suggestions. I'll let ya'll know if I find some Revolution. 2-3 drops, right?

I'll be glad to help on dosing of Benedryl. I use 2-4 drops of Revolution. I think Mrs Skul says you can use more. You may check with her. But 2-4 drops works on my squirrels. :dono
