View Full Version : Chip having a little high Temperature
Do squirrels have fever ?
Actually two days earlier chip peed 4 times in just half hr and this happened when he woke up after sleeping from 3 pm to 8 pm , he slept at 3 pm just after having his food [ 6 ml of formula ] and woke up at 8 pm and peed 4 times till 8.30 . And one thing more he is not drinking water from his water bottle , i assume this because i havent seen him drinking from it from last 2 days . I change water everyday . But i dint suspect as i thought the room temperature is not too high and he get his water requirements from the formula i made by mixing water .
Now today in evening when he was playing outside the cage he climbed on me and i felt his temperature a little bit hot . He was active as normal and played with .
Actually chip lives with me in my room . I have AC running 24 hrs with 28-30 C temperature . I cover his cage at night with just leaving 6 inch opening sideways so that he can see light and have fresh air .
Can this pee incidence and temperature variation be due to AC .
Here temperature outside is 39 C during daytime and close to 33 C at night .
Please suggest whats the prob . Right now he is sleeping after playing and temperature incidence its 10.30 PM here and he was playing at 8.00 PM

Have you tried to offer water from a syringe? If he is urinating a lot and not drinking from his water bottle he could easily get dehydrated.

I tried giving him water from syringe but he refused it . He is active but dont know why he doesnt want water .
Can it be due to AC or the formula i give him with water .

If he is still taking formula he may not want that much water, since there is water in the formula. Have you tried a shallow water dish instead of a bottle? He may like it better. You need a heavy on so he doesn't tip it over. Here is what I do - I use a heavy crock that I fill with clean, smooth stones or marlbles to about 3/4" from the top. I then pour water over so it submeges the pebbles and is above them by about 1/4". It makes it heavier so he does not tip and it also prevents him from sticking his nose in so far that he gets a nose full of water (sometimes babies take a while to figure stuff like "drinking" out!!)
He WILL feel noticably warmer after a strenuous play session, feet will be warm and the ears too if you feel them. It does not sound like he has any other symptoms of illness...

Hi:wave123 , I have not had time to go back over all post threads on Chip. Can you tell me how old Chip is and how much formula he takes in a day? Is he acting normal? Playing? eating? Just not drinking? Give me a few minutes to let my dogs out and I will be right back to help if I can.

Chip is now over 3 months old .
He drinks 6 ml per feeding and 4 times a day .
He is acting normal and playing as usual .
Regarding eating , he just eats grapes , sometimes a little bit of cucumber or tomato but not enough so that i can say he is feeding on veggies , he is completely on formula .
Today i gave him fresh corn not boiled not roasted ,not dried , just fresh corn . He ate it quite a bit . I even gave him boiled egg white but he dint like it .
Will be more than glad to answer any question regarding him

Is he getting any rodent block or any other forms of calcium?? When he weens from the formula, he will need the rodent blocks to get all his nutrients.

Ok I'm . I see Cittermom has posted. This is excellent advice. If he is taking formula he most likely just does not want water .Also most squirrels temperatures run about 100-102 degrees F He will just feel warm to us due to that anyway.

After reading this above, don't worry. He is most definitely getting plenty of fluids. Also getting it from the fruits he is eating.

No actually i dont have the specific rodent block which TSB advices instead i have dwarf rabbit block which he doesnot eat . But ya the formula i give him has all the vitamins and calcium he needs .
Just now fed him . He drank 4 ml of formula and then went back to sleep . His temperature was normal now . Thanks to everyone for being so prompt . Will keep an eye on him regarding hi water drinking habits . As for now i have kept a water bowl in his cage . :thankyou

Try putting a piece of ice (or, for a treat, frozen fruit juice) in his water bowl. A lot of times mine will lick ice when they won't touch anything else.
