I'm getting ready to move Pat outside into a big outdoor cage (with her cage inside) and start the soft release.

I am wondering about the calcium, though. I bought her an antler from Henry's - it was HUGELY expensive for the small piece of antler I got and she never has bothered with it. She stands on it but does not try to eat it or scrap her teeth on it or anything. I'm wondering if dog bones (the ones that are filled with stuff like peanut butter or other treats for dogs) or the rawhide kind that are knotted would supply any calcium.

Thoughts?

Hi Terry,
I'm new to the forum so nice to meet you.

I've been making sandwiches using organic almond butter and pressing chopped organic kale or collards into the almond butter to get it to stick good. They've been eating it and seem to like it just fine. Kale and collards are a great source of calcium, it's how I get my calcium too. :D Organic kale and organic collards are pretty cheap, I pay about $3 for a whole head. I make a bunch of sandwiches and freeze them, the sandwiches freeze really well and are ready to go when needed. I cut the whole sandwich into small squirrel size sandwiches which are so cute.

Again, nice to meet you and good luck on your release! I love to see animals get returned to freedom! :D

Hi there. We don't sell antlers, so you must have bought it somewhere else...:) A healthy squirrel, once released, should not need any calcium or other supplements. The peanut butter sandwiches and kale mentioned by veganhead would be a tasty snack for a wild squirrel, especially if you use whole wheat bread and all-natural peanut butter.

Good luck!

I mostly use Dave's Killer Bread: http://www.daveskillerbread.com/breads.shtml
They have a huge variety/selection of breads. All are organic and some of the varieties are loaded with different seeds like pumpkin, sunflower and more which the squirrels love. You can get amaranth, barley, wheat, buckwheat, bran, millet, oat, quinoa and many more different grain-flour choices. Their raisin bread is the bomb. 'Killer Powerseed' and 'Good Seed' are really, really good. I get Dave's Bread at my local co-op or Fred Myers. It's really some of the best bread I've had.

Oh my gosh, you are right and I am sorry! It was VERY early on (probably way too early! lol) and I did not even know about Henry's yet. It may have been the squirrel store or something. I bought a lot from Henry's, (still plan on doing that!) so I just assumed I bought it there. SO SORRY!!!

Hey guys just an FYI - ebay is the place for antlers if you don't have a woods full of them like I do. OMG I have bought boxes of them for my dogs and squirrels. They are great for dogs- and if they get icky or dirty - in the dishwasher they go. (same when I get new squirrels - antler goes in dishwasher and good as new) ok, back to calcium.
