Our son-in-law found a tiny bird in a window well this morning when he was going to work. It has just little pin feathers he took it home and Cindy(daughter) warmed it up and went and bought "Tropical baby hand feeding formula" The store clerk said he has used it for wild birds and it has lots of nutritional vitamins in it.

Question - how often should she feed this little sparrow - he takes the formula willingly and enjoys drops of water from her finger. When it has had enough, it just curls up in her hand and goes back to sleep.

She has a heater on low to warm the fleece blankets and the bird has peed and umm, pooped as well. At first it was very frightened but now is content to be picked up and cuddled.

She will get up thru the night to feed it - just wondered how often she should feed - and if there are any other suggestions for food for this tiny bird. It seems healthy and she will release probably in a couple of weeks but just wants to do what is best for it.
Thanks so much. Beaulah - - (Wiggles mom):)

Baby birds do not need feeding through the night (unless very young nestlings, which if this one has pin feathers, it will not need night time feedings). I would feed it until its crop is full, then wait half hour and check. Do not feed again until crop empties, as you don't want food to spoil in there. Make a little 'nest' using a small round dish lined with toilet tissue that is just a little bigger diameter then the bird. Birds will lift and potty outside of the nest. Critter keepers are good to use to keep them in. I don't anything about that diet, but I would suggest you feed the updated Fons diet:

1 cup (136 grams)ZuPreen Premium Ferret Diet
1.5 cups (355 cc) water
3 Tb (18 grams) dried egg white
3 grams (3/4 tsp.) calcium carbonate
0.5 grams (1/8 tsp.) Avi-Era bird vitamins
5.0 grams (1/2 tsp) active culture plain yogurt (or bird benebac)...if you will be freezing this, which for one you would, don't add any probiotic until you will be feeding it.

Presoak kibble in water (do not drain 'excess' water...you may need to add a little extra to get a consistency to pull up into syringe, but don't do that until all has been mixed).
blend all ingredients in food processor.

You can get everything except the ferret diet at Chris' Squirrels and More, I believe, but you can do an online search.

Good luck! They fledge quickly. You will need to make sure they are waterproof before you release them....but that is a bit down the road.

If you have questions you might try "Starling Talk." It's an online board for bird folks.
