An older gentleman brought a little baby girl squirrel to me tonite and I'm unable to take her in because we have early appointments tomorrow morning and more in the afternoon and this is a no more than 5 week old baby :(

I did the 2nd best thing - under the circumstances that's the best I could do - and since he said he would be willing to care for her if only he knew how, I told him to bring her over and taught him how to care for her. Showed the gentleman how rehydrate her, how to feed her, gave him written instructions and recipes for Pedialyte and goat's milk formula (for tonite and tomorrow til he gets some formula) and some syringes with a nipple. Explained she needs to be stimulated for pee and poo... Poor little thing was covered in little white stuff - fly eggs I suspect, or fleas. I tried cleaning them off with apple cider vinegar, got a fair amount but suspect there's plenty left - and I told him to give her a bath in Dawn when he got home (I didn't have any here or else I would've bathed her myself). He said also that he has a heating pad, so he'll make sure she's kept warm and will probably try to reunite her with her mom in the morning.

He said he would keep me informed and call me if he has any trouble.

Man! Why do I have to be the only one around here who loves these babies? I get sick and nobody can take over :(

At least he was willing to learn and give the little one a chance. Maybe, he too will fall in love with the fuzzbutts and then possibly you may have a partner in fuzzbutt care? Thank you for taking the time to show him what to do and how to do it.

I may need your help for advice later one folks... this little one is VERY skinny and those eggs did worry me. I'll make sure to check on the fellow tomorrow, will call and find out how things are going if he doesn't call me first.

Thing is, he'll have to go with the Goat's milk formula for tomorrow at least because I don't have much FV left at all for my own kids and Canada Post is supposed to go on strike Thursday... :madd meaning I'm not sure if I order any now whether I will get it or not during the strike. I'll have to find out. :dono If I can get some then I will gladly give some to him... if not we'll have to go the route of Esbilac, making sure it is made in advance and that it is THOROUGHLY diluted and that we get this little baby used to it GRADUALLY.

The fly eggs have to be removed as soon as possible. They will be maggots soon. They can enter her cavities and she will be in trouble. Try to get her soon and remove maggots and eggs.

Does he have internet? If so, maybe you might want to give him the TSB address in case he can't reach you and has questions. Tell him to tell us that Scooterzmom is helping him and we'll know who he is!

does he have a dog or cat? Maybe he has revolution on hand.

Scooterzmom, I have to admit, I am one of those ignorant Americans who does not really know Canadian geography too well. We should put a map of Canada together and have you and others educate us. Plus, I have no idea who is where or who is close to another. Plus we really have to work on getting more Canadian squirrel lovers on board, don't we!

I did give him the site's URL... he has no computer though, said his girlfriend has a computer so that's why I gave him the addy. I have revolution... how much should I use? I didn't weigh her... she's tiny... I'll ask him to bring her to me tomorrow again.

I know we do need help up here in the Montreal area. This is ridiculous, it seems like only Kristal and I are the ones up here taking care of them and both of us are stuck looking for a regular/proper release person. Xepher now has 2 babies but they're her first (currently at Kristal's cuz she had vacation plans made long before she got her babies) and I'm not sure she's in a position to take any in the future. :(

To help locate you... The New England states are the closest to us. I'm in Montreaql, Quebec. We are north of New York state and/or the northern tip of Vermont. Montreal is just north of Lake Champlain, i.e. north of Plattsburgh N.Y. or Burlington VT if you prefer. We are about 2 hours from the New York state border. In fact our border (Quebec I mean) touches both New York and Vermont.

Astra and gs1 and squirrelfriend are west of me, in Ontario... Toronto, Ontario is about 7 hour drive from here, a little over 400 miles west if my memory serves me right - and Ottawa, Ontario is about 1.5 hour or 2 hours' drive from here.

I would use the Revolution for sure. Try to remove as many as you can. The Revolution will work, though. I will look for references for dosing. We have a thread going tonight about a red squirrel loaded with fly eggs and maggots. I believe it mentions dosing on Revolution. I'll look and post info in a minute or so. BRB.

Here are some excerpts on the Revolution use and dosing.

Just a few things to remember.
You might have to keep washing over and over again. " It took me 1 hr of washing and scrubbing under the warm water. (The eggs kept coming and coming.) Then when I seen there were no more Fly-eggs coming off, or stuck to them. I then washed 1 more time with shampoo/ or Dawn.
Then Blow them dry.("" After you finished>If you dump clorox in the drain and them plug them for 24 hr. That should kill all maggots and eggs in the drain."") Now Remember you can put the Revolution on and wait 24 hr be for you get them wet. OR Wash them and wait 12 hr after dry. Then is it safe to put the WHOLE TUB OF REVOLUTION ON YOUR BABY. If it is the under 10 lb. Use half a tub if it is 10 to 20 lb. Then if you have anyone else you can put the rest on. Use it up. It is only good for a short time after it has been opened. Minutes(Letting it sit, it will loose its strength.)

Just an FYI - the Revolution is just as good as the Capstar, and that is the reason you are seeing them pour out of the wounds - the Revolution. It works REALLY fast.

Also here is the Thread. It contains posts on dosing revolution.http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28704

Hope it helps.

If I can get Capstar, how much do I need?

Are you sure you put a whole tube of Revolution on a teeny tiny baby???? She can't be moe than 85 or 90 grams, at most.

I didn't see any maggots on this baby, and no wounds either... was just like little white sticky dots or so... I have no experience with maggots so I really don't know what I was looking at. It was only when the gentleman said there seemed to be tiny flies or fleas jumping of and onto his shirt that I noticed them. Actually even then I saw nothing, but once I started rubbing the vinegar soaked towel over the baby I could see like little sticky white things coming off.

Im going to have to call him in the morning and ask him to bring her back after my doc's appointment. Wish I had known sooner... :dono Like I said, I never dealt with maggots before. :(

Scooterzmom, regarding the postal strike, is UPS or FedEx a shipping option for you there? Just wondering.

They are, but much more costly than Canada Post. I think I can work something out with Nick. I can't remember but I think he shipped it with UPS the last time.

I hope it goes fine. Hope you and the gentleman are successful in ridding the baby of her nasty bugs too. Best of luck.

Thanks. I just wish I could have taken this baby under my full care... I just can't, not with everything that's going on this week :( I can barely juggle the feedings for my own guys at this point, stretching them a bit apart but at least they are older and they can eat some veggies, boo-balls and blocks. I can only hope that this fellow will have enough patience and do as instructed and take good care of her. *sigh

Gotta get myself in bed... have to be up real early this morning.....

I can give him some formula until his gets here. UPS is the better choice for delivery since they charge less and don't charge duty unless customs asks for it. Fedex always does charge it, and that annoys me since I think they must pocket it 4 times out of 5.

If you have Revolution, make sure that guy gets some on her FAST - a couple drops between the shoulders. Those maggots will...well, let's not say - just get him the Revolution ASAP.
