BABY BIRD EMERGENCY?? (sorry, didnt know where else to go!)

What type of Bird and what is wrong with it?? I watched for an hour this morning and no sign of mama anywhere, so I scooped him up. Any chance for him? Anything I can do? Thanks.

I am not good at IDing birds, but I would say since it seems to still have mostly fluff (insted of full feathers) it's a baby not a fledgling.

If it's not injured you can try getting it back into it's nest if you can find it and reach it.

If you can't reach it you can try creating a substitute nest up in the same tree (I'll see if I can find instructions for you).

If you can't do any of the above or if it's injured, you should get it to an experienced rehabber.

For now keep him in a safe quiet place in a box and put a heating bad under it for warmth.

As far as feeding...that depends on they type of bird so hopefully someone more bird-savvy can help you ID him and give you those instructions.

I did look around the area I found him for a nest, couldn't see a thing....only a few tall pine trees in the area. Didn't want to leave him out there because of the area cats. He seems ok for now, just need to know what to feed him and how to treat his condition. Hopefully someone will come along....in the mean time....I'll be googling! :D

Not sure right now what kind if bird it is but that doesn't really matter right now because he needs help
He has a ruptured air sack and it needs to be aspirated
I use a syringe needle poke it in and draw the air out
It may refill and u may need to keep doin it a couple of times a day
He should be put on baytril to prevent infection
If u don't feel comfortable doin this get him to someone who does
In the mean time hydration with cut bits of blueberries then after that Fons
Feed every half hour keep him in a bowl that fits him with Kleenex and keep warm with a heating pad on low under the bowl

The problem with him is a ruptured air sac. Birds have lungs and also air sacs in their wings and other places and if they are attacked, they can rupture and swell like this little tyke's has. I see it a lot at the wildlife center where I volunteer. The ruptured air sac needs to be punctured with a small needle to let the air out and the baby will need antibiotics. I wouldn't recommend trying that yourself, I think this little tyke needs a rehabber.

ok, I had some sterile needles on hand, so i ruptured the sacks...he seemed VERY relieved! :) Thanks for the advice.

Now for feeding....I don't have any blueberries on hand as suggested, however, I did water down some hills a/d (a canned veterinary diet fed to sick and injured dogs and cats) He was very willing to eat, so I used a tuburculin syringe and fed him about 1.5mlof 1/2 water and 1/2 a/d.
I have left a message for a local rehabber....however, a return call is slim to none....I didnt get a return call when I called about my squirrel "Trooper".

Anyway....I have always concidered obtaining my rehabber's license....Im beginning to feel as if something is telling me to move foward! :D

All I have is tablet form Baytril (22mg) I will probably need to get injectable baytril dosed to give this guy orally, correct? Will be trying to get in touch with the vet...gonna be difficult on a holiday weekend Im sure. :shakehead

You may be able to use it by crushing and diluting.
I've usually only used the injectable but I'm pretty sure my vet has given me the crushed version for a squirrel
(I remember seeing the little bits floating about).

See if you can get a weight and maybe call Psychobird for details on how to use the Baytril you have.

Be very sure you have the exact amounts on everything (check your decimals!) to avoid incorrect dosing.

I have seen something like this in sac ca. capital it is a bad thing. You need to put iodine on the feet. The fathers may not come back and, you may get a touch of it. Spray your hands with RAD or something to kill all bacteria. Also
give the bird to the environmental resoce agency. Someone did that.

:) ....helps to have worked in a vet office for many years however working with dogs and cats is A LOT different that a tiny bird....it was a little scary poking him with a needle! :o

They are funny little birds, they kinda stomp Thier feet and yell at you to feed them
Did u start him baytril? How If coccidia is causing them issues you know
The stench makes it clear and they crash fast
Many wild animals have some kind of patasite and live with just fine as long as they are healthy
How many times have u aspirated the air out?
I have never had to do it longer than 3 days hopefully it will seal up soon
I know sometimes they need surgical intervention but personally I have never had to do that
If it's just a small amount of air under the skin u don't have to get it out as long as they are comfortable and breathing okay
It will resolve itself in time

I have only had to get the air out the one time, except on his head twice. He seems to be thriving...and yes he screams at me when I have waited too long to feed him. :D
He "bites" at the syringe instead of opening his beak for me to feed him, so instead of mixing it with water and syringe feeding, I just scoop a bit of food onto the tip of the syringe and let him bite it off...seems happy to do it this way.
