A friend just brought me 3 baby orphaned Northern Flyers from our North Shore of Long Island NY. They are eyes wide open and full coats and moving about. What should I feed??? Any Dangers Squirrel to human???? or Visa Versa?

I would try Fox Valley formula. If they don't want to take it from a syringe, you can give it on your fingertips or in a small dish (try mixing it with yogurt).
I would also start offering greens and other foods fromthe healthy diet.

Yes - even better is fleece - like the polarfleece stuff - or even old sweatshirts. You want something that doesn't ravel into threads so they don't get tangled.

If their eyes are open, you can put some rodent block in with them, and yes, the fox valley formula. Are you sure they are northerns? Much less common then the southerns and illegal to keep pretty much everywhere, so they will have to be released. What is their history, how did this person come to have them? Do you have any pics?

They are from the North Shore of Long Island In New York State. From What I understand Somthing got the Mom and they were left in an old cabinate outside in a watering pail. They are bt no means newborns that much is obvious.

fishandchamelon, there is a wonderful rehabber in Westbury LI who may be able to help you with the flyers. Would you like me to contact her for you? She is a licensed rehabber who has a sanctuary out there for squirrels.

:wave123 Hi fishandchamelon
If you can get a picture of the belly. That will tell me if they are Northern or Southern. Northern Flyers will have Darker belly hair to the skin. Southern Flyer will have the lighter color hair. The other thing is they are bigger then a Southern. What you need to do if your keeping them for release yourself. You need 32/40 FoxVally. Be sure to add the heavy Whipping and a Full fat Yogurt.
StonyField makes a organic Vanilla. It is called YoBabby.
You need to prepare it!
1 TBS FoxFally
2 TBS Water
1/3 tsp Yogurt
1 TBS Heavy Whipping Cream
Mix the Cream in last. Other wise you will wind up making butter. :D
Southern and Northern Squirrels are just like All Squirrels. You will not catch anything from them. Now They can catch the Flue/cold from you.
They will eat every thing just like All Squirrels. The only thing different is. They need Protean. Lot's of protean. WaxWorma, are the favorites of my Flyers. WaxWorms, MealWorms, Freeze Dried Chicken Chunks. (Made by PrimBites.) VitaLife makes a Chicken Chip and a Chicken Popper. These 3 are a dog treat. BUT it is ONLY Chicken. You also can boil chicken and feed them some. Cut the bone in half and they will eat on them. Scrambled eggs, and the Shell. This is going to be a stable part of the diet. They will also need Mushroom every day. They make there own Vitamin D. But also need the mushrooms every day. Just keep giving it to them. They will eventually eat them. (""They love the gills on the Mushrooms"") They also Love Cucumber Avocado Cherry Tomatoes,Sugar Snap Peas and Snow Peas. Broccoli,Butter Nut Squash,Acorn Squash,Apple, Blurriest, Cherry, Grapes,Cumquat's,Pears, much of the fruits. (Just remember All Flyers Have a Sweet tooth. They will hunt down anything sweet first. When the sweets are gone. They will finally eat the veg. The Squash is best when heated slightly in the microwave.:thumbsup3 I hope this will help until they make there destination.

Not to state something super obvious, especially with my obvious lack of experience, but I guess a person would be safer to stay *away* from wild mushrooms found outside? I was just reading another thread that talked about a couple of squirrels dying after accidentally getting the wrong mushroom. The member there said she started getting rid of all of her yard's mushrooms after that, just to be safe. Just thought I'd mention it, since I can imagine a person picking wild ones with the thought that it's something the squirrel would like.
