Hi,

I just received a call from Tampa Bay Emergency Vet - they got in 3 Eastern Cottontail babies and need someone with experience to take them. I have no bunny experience.

Is there anyone in the Tampa Bay area who can do this? They are looking for someone. If so, please call them at 265-4043.

Thanks :)

Do you know how old the babies are? Cottontail babies are SUPER hard for even the most experienced rehabber and most do not make it. As a rule, if the babies eyes are open and they are 4 inches or more long, they should be left in the nest(mom actually only visits the nest to feed in the evenings so they are often alone) or if they are in danger...move them to a safer location. Baby cottontails are self sufficient at aroud 3 to 4 weeks of age which is much younger than a domestic rabbit. Babies this age do not need to be "rescued" as so many good samaritans think and should be returned to a safe area as their odds alone without mom are better than receiving care in captivity. BUT, if the babies eyes aren't yet open or they are smaller than 4 inches you have no choice but to try. Baby rabbits can be so unrewarding...but if you DO get them to make it....it's a great feeling. Fingers crossed for the babies!
