Hi guys! I just picked up 2 baby flyers that were cat caught. No visable injuries and vet was not available. Vet tech looked them over but has no experience with these guys. No antibiotics given and only amox on hand. I can't get them seen until tomorrow afternoon.
I have never had flyers before so I am new to all this cuteness! I have started hydrating them after about 30 minutes on heat. They have no idea what to do with the nipple. Finder had given human baby formula via dropper...it's all she had. She says they did not choke but didn't act interested. I have only been able to get about .5 cc hydrating solution into them. One is 21 grams and other is 24 grams. Eyes are open and I can see teeth on the bottom.
I have FV 32/40 and 20/50. Which one, how much and how often? Should I start amox with these guys or wait until the vet can see them tomorrow?
We will be leaving in a few minutes to go grab some pedialyte...I have better luck with store bought. It will take us a bit to get there and back. Any

You can make homemade pedialyte with items at home.... always warm the squirrel them hydrate before trying to feed formula.
Please get a 1cc o-ring syringe to feed them with to avoid aspiration... no larger than 3cc syringe.
Homemade Pedialyte
1 tsp salt (teaspoon)
3 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
1 quart warm water
FV 32/40 - Squirrels 4 wks and under
FV 20/50 - Squirrels 4 wks and older

Hi M&MMom:wave123
Have you raised Flying Squirrels be for? Do you have 1cc or 3 cc syringes? Do you have any silicone elongated nipples?
I believe your Flyers are 3 to 3 1/2 weeks old.
I would start them on Amoxi immediately! If the cat scratched them just a little, Tomorrow might be to late. I would dose them every 12 hr. Be sure you use some yogurt or probotics to help with tummy issues from the Amoxi. When you feed them you wont there tummy to feel like bread dough. :D Not to tight. You can always feed more if they are still hungry. I would start every 4 hr round the clock. (Remember there moms are up all night eating and coming back to feed babies.) They never go to far from the nest. You will wont to weigh them be for they eat and after they eat. Usually they will gain 1 to 2 gm after each feeding. Then they will be back to the start wt. Every 3 to 4 day Should put on 1 gm or 2. :D I always stimulate them be for I weigh them and after I feed them. It some times takes a long time to get them to pooh. I will PM my Home number to you if you need anything please call my day or night. I am always up all night with all the flyeres any way.
PS
The flyers like the formula almost hot! If they will not eat or take 1 bit and then turns the nose up to it. It needs to be hotter.
Be sure to keep them wrapped up with some fleece. If they chill. They will not eat!
Use the 32/40 FV until they are weaned. Then you will add some FV to yogurt as a maintenance for them the rest of their liefs. :thumbsup Mixing instructions
1 TBS of FV
2 TBS Water
1/3 tsp vanilla yogurt
1 TBS Heavy Whipping Cream
The Vanilla yogurt needs to be a Full Fat Yogurt. YoBabby makes a organic Full Fat yogurt. When mixing the formula Mix well.
Then add the Heavy Cream in last. If you mix it all to gather you will make butter. :D
I hope this will help you a little. Christal

I did do the homemade pedialyte...however I have better luck with store bought. I have .5 cc, 1 cc and 3 cc syringes and nipples. The just seem very lethargic. 1 Of them is making like a cricket sounding noise...is this normal? I have raised reds and greys...never flyers. I have never even seen a flyer in my area.
The finder found them at about 7:00 last night in her cats mouth. She kept them in a bucket in the garage filled with leaves, grass twigs, dog and cat food, rice, peanuts and who knows whatelse. Its been very cold and rainy here and the seemed pretty damp when I got the call today. They are on heat so I hope they just needed to be a bit warmer and they will perk-up a little bit.
Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for the info! This is my very first time with flyers so I might take you up on the phone offer. These guys seem so much more fragile than reds or greys...do you happen to know dosing on amox? I am not in front of it right now but it is liquid. I will not be back home for about another hour and will check the info on the bottle. It is fresh...my Grandson has strep throat.

They probably have pneumonia, Or just making a noise that they are hungry and wont mom. When you get home put them to your ear and listen. If the clicking noise is with every breath then it is Pneumonia. Keep them on heat. Can you call me. I can't type that fast.
I will not be able to help unless you call me.
Did the finders try feeding them?

When did he get the meds?
I will give you the dose when you call me. If you can get a few pictures when you get home and post them. That would help.
I am steeping away from the computer for now. I will wait for your call.:thumbsup3

I have been in contact with Mrs. Skull. She is a blessing :thankyou .
We are having issues getting these little guys to eat much. It has just been drop by drop. One has eaten a little bit more than the other and both are peeing and pooping.
We have an appointment today with the vet. They are putting up some clavamox for them. We are also going to be sent home with lactated ringers. He has also mentioned depending on how bad they really are possibly tube feeding them to get them going. This is on the very bottom of my list and I have expressed that.
We will do the sub q first and hope that they will perk up a bit after doing that. I will keep everyone informed as to what is going on...please say a prayer, they could really use it. I have to say that they have both stolen my heart...cutest things that I have ever seen! I :Love_Icon them already!
Could someone chime in and tell me what you thing about clavamox, lactated ringers and if you think that tube feeding is necessary.
Thanks,
Jesse

Hi M&BsMom :wave123
I just sent a PM to you. NO TUB FEEDING PLEASE!!! :nono
That will be a Death Sentence for The Little Flyer.
Lactated Ringers are the best. :thumbsup3
He will start Perking up once he is Hydrated. Just keep offering some Fluids by mouth also. Keep offering the diluted formula.
It will be Drop by drop till they get use to not having mom around and they get a little older. Flyers are so time consuming when rehabbing.
Once you get use to it. Then it is a piece of cake. (A NUTTY CAKE!) :D
I am praying for these 2 little guys. :grouphug
PS
That little guy looks so sweet.
