I have 2 orphaned squirrels which I judge to be about 9 weeks old. I have had them for about 3 weeks. I have tried to find a local rehabber to soft release them, but so far everyone is "too busy". Meanwhile they have massively outgrown their small cage (approx 1 foot by 2 feet). I own a very large cat tower. It is 3feet deep and wide and about 5 feet tall. I'm worried about the bar spacing which is 7/8 inch by 4 inch. The bars are very sturdy and inflexible. Is that size bar width okay? They really need to be in a bigger cage. I have them in my barn which is open so thy can become acclimated to the weather and hear all the sounds. Thank you.

We like the bar space to be no farther apart than 1/2 inch as squirrels (even adult squirrels) can squeeze through them at 1 inch apart.

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I had been uncomfortable with the width and will come up with another plan. I appreciate your help and will probably have further questions. I wish they weren't so cute, they sure do kindle ones maternal instiincts.

Do you still have them on formula? Perhaps you can do something with your cat tower like put some hardware cloth over it. Do you have a picture of what you are talking about, that would help out a lot.
You aren't thinking of release yet are you? May I ask what you are feeding them?
They can sure tug at your heart strings can't they? Thanks for saving them.:grouphug
