View Full Version : Do squirrels have recreational sex?

Kelly Brady

I know this is a crazy question, but my outdoor girly Paco had sex in front of me a good three weeks ago. Now, last week on Tuesday she did again. I thought I read that they only had sex while in heat but could be totally wrong. Anyone no for sure?
She does not go far from my back yard and seems to do this deed in front of us. How it works out that way is beyond me. It is kind of creepy since I raised her for over a year prior to release but wonderful to know because she has her babies in the release cage outside.
Last Tuesday the 10th of May she had a gentleman caller so I am re-setting my due dates:thinking
Now I am confused and not sure when to expect babies. :dono Oh dear

I really don't know.... I kind of doubt it, though. I do know that they masturbate, at least.:dono Perhaps the other squirrel was shooting blanks or the eggs did not attach to her uterus properly and were discharged. If so, she would go into heat again, is my thinking.

I've seen females being chased by several males...it has to be exhausting!!!
All the boys in town know when she's ripe for the pickin' i guess.
I doubt it's because of her "come hither look"!

Yea, I once walked in when Nibbler was finishing up. He was licking away at himself, and I thought he was just grooming until he hopped down and jumped up on the cage bars to say hi. His penis was swollen to maybe 6 times normal size, redder than a beet and covered with some white stuff that looked like a cross between skin peeling off after a sunburn and pus. I was horrified, at first. In fact I thought it was an infection or a terrible injury, but he was not in the least perturbed... That he turned out to be completely fine can only mean one thing...

I have also seen Squeaky with his pulled out of that sort of pouch that they have. It turns out that their penises are a lot bigger on the inside. I am not kidding. What I saw was about 2 inches long and sort of drooped over like a worm... That is quite a big thing for such a tiny fuzz monster. I don't even think it was all out

Also, another board member who has lived with a solo male for quite a while confirmed to me that his boy sometimes masturbates more than once a day.

To be honest, I think it is pretty cool that they do... Or that at least SOME of them do. It's only the really clever animals like monkies and the like that masturbate. It probably takes a certain amount of creativity, intelligence and self awareness to "discover oneself" for the simple joy of doing so :p

The american red mates with as many partners as show up, apparently, but I think that the Eastern Greys and Fox squirrels mate with few or just one each time that they go into heat.

Well this is the most hysterical thread I have ever started.
I am blushing and laughing at the same time.:D

Jackie have you witnessed spice takin her love to town that often?

This behavior of Paco's is quite puzzling and Mads you are correct, it does not look at all nice for the female. Especially my mean jelly bean Paco. She is very vocal and I will leave it at that. Has no where near a come hither look. :osnap

The last time she did this (last Tuesday at 4:05 pm) ha she was on top of the release cage and Scott and I were yet again out there to see this. I have three girly fuzzers ready to be released soon out there and Scott said "oh not in front of the little girls Paco !):poke

Any way these acts took place weeks apart so who knows if she is even in heat at all. :dono

I do need a squachiatrist. I really need to look this up. Paco's life would be great reality TV. R rated of course.:bowdown

I have noticed that Buddy cleans his special place by first getting an erection, then cleans, then it retracts. and he is just an itty bitty chipmunk!

I was wondering these facts of life myself about the animal world.

Hi Kelly, Now don't ask how I know this, I guess 11 years later you learn stuff whether you want to or not.:sanp3 Female greys mate with more than one male. They are only receptive to mating for a short time, 1-2 days. But if they are not impregnated quicky, they attract mates for a few weeks, cycling in and out of a receptive state. They may mate with several males but usually only one male is the father of the entire litter. After the first male mates with the female, the male emits a waxy substance that produces a plug in the vigina and doesn't let other male sperm reach the eggs to fertilize them. The next males also leave the plug but the sperm can't reach the eggs because of the first male's plug already in place. (TMI, perhaps, :dono ) So now you know. :rotfl

Marty, Hate to put my name to this one. :rotfl

IR once quoted a book that said that the females will sometimes clean out the waxy plug before mating again. And it does make good biological sense for a solo female to try to diversify her gene pool. More of her offspring are likely to survive that way. I think she got that info from "Tree Squirrels of North America".

My boys are all brothers, but one is quite different from the others. Squeaky and Nibbler are both big and burly with puffy cheeks to keep their big jaw muscles in, red markings along their sides and white ear tufts and eye rings. Babe is long and slender with a super puffy tail. He has a silver body with a small spot of grey-brown in the top middle of his back, and a small, slim head with a totally blonde face and tan eye rings. Their temperaments are different, too. Babe is quite cautious and introverted while his brothers are more rough and tumble and gregarious.

So it seems likely that they had different dads, is my point. I guess I could order a DNA test to find out for sure... :thinking

a perfect spring thread! (begin sound track from "Camelot": tra-laaaaa, it's MAY! the LUSTY month of May!....that lively month when everyone goes BLISSfully ASTRAY!!!" )

I did read all about the "copular plug" in "North American Tree Squirrels", which is an amazing book with lots of TMI on squirrel sexual behavior. :D Well when you read about highly intelligent animals, you notice that they are also sexually promiscuous -- dolphins are supposed to be outrageous party animals, and bisexual, too :rotfl So...we know how smart our squirrels are....:D :icon_devil

:rotfl DNA test! killing me! :rotfl BTW, I think I remember hearing/reading that info too, about the female often removing the plug for one reason or another. Even because it is uncomfortable. :thinking Again not sure where I gleaned that info from but seems I'm in good company with the general facts. Since I think I have most every publication known to man on squirrels, I'm sure, my info is from multiple sources !:dono I could check if anyone needs or wants it.

Thanks Marty for that very detailed information. I find this amazing and love to learn about our very smart fuzzers.
Jackie, you are correct Paco rules the territory and a LOT of tweaking has been going on over the past week. Scott and I said it is freaky. Sort of like grunting or barking everywhere. That is why I cannot understand why Ms. Paco was doing the deed like three weeks ago.
IR, there is no doubt in my mind squirrels are very intelligent. I will look for that book because neither of my two books had a thing on the topic of sexual behavior.
Aunt Katherine, I did interview Paco's baby Daddy the first time around as he waited patiently for her to finish a nut before she would allow any sex but who the heck knows who the daddy is this time. I am lost here:dono
4S-she will not wear patent leather but she loves a pair of my tennis shoes for gardening. Not very sexy huh?

I think I need to have a squirrel sex drink in keeping with the topic. Sounds amazing:rotfl

This thread cracks me up!!! I've seen snakes do the dirty deed in my back yard, birds, you name it, but NEVER a squirrel. My squirrels here are extremely discreet.

As for those dolphins, I can confirm that they are indeed bisexual. I was staying at a hotel many years ago that had 2 dolphins on their property. My boyfriend and I would go sit and watch them after dinner, and they would often be having sex. Anyway, you can imagine our surprise to find out from their trainer that they were both males!!!

Baxied, I swear I see other squirrels chase each other and then disappear and hear what I think is mating going on. Then there is Paco. :dono

She has always been a very different squirrel in too many ways to type here. I think safe to say she was developmentally delayed. Took a good year to get her to jump with accuracy with practice. I really wish I did not have to witness this sexual behavior (now three times), It is really a very weird thing for us to see.Ugggg but she must feel very comfortable being around us.

The first time I saw her have sex, the babies came exactly 46 days later. Which is another thing she wants to share with us 100%. I feel very special and lucky to be a part of that.:bowdown

My daughters school had a contest for their school paper of most unusual pet and she wasn't going to mention the squirrels because we release them all but a teacher told the staff about it. The school staff deemed her to have the most unusual pet and did a write up on our many raised and released fuzzers with pictures. Darcey quoted in the article that although Paco was free she was really a pet because she shares her life closely with all of us and stays very close to home. One special girl for sure.
