View Full Version : Front Limb Injuries

Hi, please forgive this long post, but I want to make sure I include all info that may be of use. :)

I've only ever raised babies, not dealt so much with injured squirrels.

At any rate, my 'patient' looks to be around 3 or 4 months old. She and her two siblings frequent the area around my bird feeders. Unfortunately they don't have too great a fear of cats (or people) and it seems one of the kitties decided to have some fun with this poor thing. I've had her for 3 days now. She has complete control over her bowls/bladder, can move her tail and use her hind limbs. Her front legs are another story. One is swollen and has a couple small punctures, I don't think it's broken, just damaged from the bites. She has a little tiny bit of reflex action in it/seems to feel some pain. Her other leg is not swollen, but is limp and there is no reflex reaction in it. At first she could not move her head or pick it up, but that has greatly improved in the last two days. She is being treated with antibiotics (cat bites) and steroids for possible spinal swelling that may be causing the limb paralysis.

I used to be a vet tech and have seen a case in a small kitten similar to this in which a kid stepped on the kitten and damaged his shoulders to the point he couldn't use them/walk. After a few weeks of treatment and confined space, he was good as new. I'm wondering if this could be shoulder damage of some kind and not anything to do with a spinal injury, especially since she is breathing/eating/drinking/fussing just fine.

There is not a vet around here that will x-ray a squirrel, so I can't know for sure.

At any rate, I just wondered what ya'll think her chances of regaining use of her front legs are? Since she does seem to be showing improvement....she is soooo frustrated that she's unable to use her hands and sit upright very well. I feel awful for her. She's being a real trooper though, especially for a baby that wasn't human raised. I'm just trying to keep my fingers out of her mouth! :)

Also, she absolutely HATES Mazuri rodent block. She chews it up and screeches at me the whole time, swallowing none of it. I've been feeding her pecans and syringing water(w/electrolytes @ first), but this is really not a complete diet I know. What should I feed? I used to have a list of squirrel approved foods, but I can't seem to find it now. And can you think of another way of keeping her hydrated? She is going to destroy my syringe before long.

She also seems to be exhibiting a nursing behavior on the little blanket she has in her pet taxi. It seems to make her feel better? She calms down a little when she does this. I have video of her doing this if it would help.

Well, thanks for taking the time to read my super long post! I appreciate your advice!

If he is still nursing on a blanket, maybe she would take formula from a syringe or even from a bowl. That might help with the nutrition and hydration both. If you go to the nutrition forum here at the squirrel board you will find everything you need. The goats milk formula would be a good start an then fox valley for squirrels. You can also get squirrel blocks that are much better tasting (or so my Sammy tells me) and better nutritionally or you can find the recipe here to an make them at home. Expert should be along soon! :grouphug

Hopefully an expert will be along shortly. I know cat bites are very scary for these critters. I certainly hope your little one improves quickly. Which antibiotic is she on?

I'm using Clavamox as the antibiotic. I've had good success with it in the past with cat bites. Her leg actually looks much better today. She seems pretty feisty today too, I'm hoping that's a good sign.

With injured little ones I have had great success with using pecan Ensure and adding a little extra calcium and yogurt. Dice fruits and veggies very small and take a small soda bottle cover it with a sock so she can prop (lay over it) up to eat.

My boy Wizard was going through my syringes so fast so I started him on a small bowl for fluids and he was so much happier.

Extra calcium, magnesium and vit D are super important.

If I can help please feel free to call me 24/7

All of my injured have chewed blankets. Maybe a stress relief. not sure:dono

Watch her teeth for strings getting caught I've had that happen and flossing an injured adult squirrel is let me say interesting.:sanp3

Did you use Dex????? IMO She really should be on Metacam but the two CANNOT BE USED TOGETHER! Either one has to clear the system totally before switching.

Heat, keep her very confined with as little movement as possible. Quiet, peaceful surrounding.

For now try things like apple, avocado, mango, broccoli, sugar snap peas opened.....those are a few I have had wilds eat very well.

My Vet always recommends Clavo. for cat bites too. It can cause GI upset but use a probiotic with it like Bene-Bac or yogurt . I use a flavored one. (Strawberry or vanilla ) Don't use light. Keep us updated on this little one.:Love_Icon
Could also use Boo Ball recipe or version of until you can get ingredients.

Hi there! :Welcome
I just wanted to say that if you do in fact have one with a spinal injury....their recooperative powers are AMAZING!
Our Baby Jude came to us with a broken back. He had no use of his back legs and couldnt even sit up to eat at first. We had to cup him in our hands to support him. In 2 short months...he gained all movement back and ran and climbed and jumped just like a normal squirrel. He was however a bit smaller than normal....most likely used up all his growing power to heal his broken back.
I used a product called Vetri DMR that can be found here.
http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/product/1820/vetri-and-dmg-liquid.htm
Heres a couple of pics of Jude so you can see for yourself how well they can heal.
First one is just hours after he came to us....second is him at about 8 months...angry because I took his nuts away.

Wow, you guys are amazing! :jump

Thank you SO much for all your advice and help so far. I will definitely be keeping you updated on her progress.

jo_schmoe - how adorable is your wee baby!! And I can see the 'you took what I want' look very well. haha I'm so glad he's made such a great recovery. Kudos to you!

lilidukes, I thought maybe the blanket chewing could be stress relief, but wasn't sure. Glad this little girl isn't the only one who does it.

I will post more later- going to try a couple new things now.
:thankyou :thankyou

Morning, just wanted to check in on how you are doing. Whats your little girls name?

Hi again,

Well, she's become very adamant about not taking food from me the last couple days. She seems to be getting to it ok on her own, but seeing as how she's a wild squirrel, I guess that's to be expected. She is showing a little improvement in sitting up a tiny bit better. She also looks to be regaining some movement in one of her arms(fingers crossed). :peace

I think the faster she can get better and be returned to her outside world the better. I'm doing my best to not disturb her too much and keep things relatively quiet. She fusses like a mad woman when I have to open her pet taxi to change the papers and feed her. :nono

I've been calling her 'Little Bit'.....trying not to get too attached because she is wild. I really wanna see her make it back outside to her siblings.

I'll update again soon, thanks for asking, lilidukes! :)
