Hi,

Please send healing thoughts for Ashkii. Ashkii is a 13 Lined Ground Squirrel and is around two years old.

He has broken his right front leg just below the elbow. He needs eight weeks of complete cage rest (time in a small enclosure to give the bone chance to heal) and two weeks of painkilling medication.

After eight weeks he will have another x-ray to see if the bone has started to heal. If it hasn't Ashkii will have to have his leg amputated. His bone density is good so hopefully the broken bone will heal well.

Heather.

Little Ashkii is in my prayers:grouphug :grouphug
It must be hard for him to be faced with a long rest period. How is he doing and is he on pain meds?
Hopefully, Ashkii will not need his leg amputated . 8 weeks is a long wait for you. My thoughts are with you during this hard time.
Please keep us posted.

Hi,

Thank you.:thankyou

Ashkii seems to be settling well in his smaller accomodation. He has eaten at little as well which is wonderful as his appetite hasn't been good over the last couple of days.

He has had his painkilling medication tonight and this will hopefully make him feel more comfortable. He is on 1 drop of Loxicom (equivalent of Metacam) daily for two weeks.

Thank you for your good wishes for this wonderful squirrel.

Heather.

There is a homeopathic supplement that will help bone build faster and stronger.

Look it up and do some research to ensure he can have it.
It's called Boiron Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) 30C Pellets. Comfrey is supposed to help with bone healing.

Hi,

Thank you for your best wishes for this special squirrel.:thankyou

Sadly Ashkii is not doing well. His leg is not healing and he is in a lot of distress (despite painkillers). He saw the vet this morning and is going to the vet again tomorrow to have his leg amputated.

This will hopefully mean that Ashkii will be free of pain once his operation wound has healed and that he will be a happy squirrel once again.

Please send healing thoughts for this little guy. Thank you from Ashkii and myself.:thankyou

Hi,

Thank you for your best wishes. Ashkii has been given some sedation today and is settled in his nest as I write.

I hope that his operation goes well tomorrow. The vet doing the operation is wonderful and has operated on a number of my animals in the past.

Thanks from Ashkii :)

Hi,

In an unexpected turn of events it is going to be possible to save Ashkii's leg.:)

My vet put Ashkii under aneasthetic this morning to prepare him for surgery and felt his leg. There was no movement in the fracture. My vet took an x-ray and this revealed that the bone is starting to heal.

Ashkii's pain had been of great concern and this was one of the reasons that amputation had been considered. However, the vet gave Ashkii a different and stronger painkiller yesterday and this seemed to help Ashkii to feel more comfortable. He was eating well, and seemed happier in himself (he had been a miserable squirrel previously).

The stronger painkiller will mean that Ashkii can be more comfortable as his leg heals. He is going to be given this painkiller for a week and will be checked by the vet again to make sure that the bone is healing properly.

Thank you for all of your best wishes for this special little guy.

Heather.

Prayers for this sweet little one. I love the photos. It gives me hope in mankind where there are nice folks willing to put so much into such a sweet soul and that there are vet teams that undertake such wee critters and treat with such care like they were the prize show dog. We will keep hoping for strength and healing!
