I am a state registered wildlife rehabber in SC. I have been rehabbing for nearly 18 years. I work almost exclusively with squirrels, but will care for other native wildlife as space and budget allow. I love my squirrels, especially the flyers. I rehab nearly 30 grays per season (we have 3 baby seasons most years) and about 10 flyers per baby season.
I do not usually take in injured adult wildlife, but will if there's no one else available. I am the only registered rehabber in my county. I am considered a private rehabber. There are larger rehab organizations in other counties, but I fall just outside their radius to be an affiliate rehabber, though we ofter consult one another. There are no state funded rehabs in SC. All of my expenses are out of pocket and I rely heavily on donations to do what I do.
I have been coming to the Squirrel Board for years now, but I just registered today. I look forward to getting to know others who share my love of squirrels!

:Welcome on board!!!
help and ideas are always welcome here!

Recently got IL State Licensing myself and am now going for federal.
Not a stranger to raising wild babies but the volume is a lot higher now since.
I assume you are working with a vet that gives you a break on services?
The vet that sends/refers to me is going to set something up and has been very generous. I was actually amazed when on of the Animal Control departments told me they will send a donation when I picked up squirrels from them.
Around here there are some very well renowned facilities but even they get overloaded and so do the private rehabbers...2 of the more expreriened ones are retiring :(

Too many people running into and overunning animals...

I did have a vet who gave me a break, but he recently moved. I was left high and dry. I have a regular vet here who does assist me, but he relies on my knowledge and consults with my former vet. Most of my donations are from girl/boy scout troops and people in the community who support what I do. I don't receive nearly enough to cover all my expenses, but I love what I do!

UGH!!!
Well, with your experience you're half way to vet school anyway right?
I'm using my local petvet for quick stuff like meds and supplies, some of which have to be ordered and recently had to get and Xray done. If I need more specialized care I will tyake the trip to the Vet /rehabber an hour south ...with gas prices this high I hope I don't have to go often.

Maybe you can do a similar type of thing? use your vet nearby and find a specialist elsewhere?

WE don't doi t for the money that's fo' sho'!

I have an Eagle scout that is supposedly building nest boxes and a release cage for me on a property that I got permission to release on....we'll see how that goes...(crossing fingers)
My opinion is that the more you get the public involved the better your odds of financial survival at this....haven't been at it long enough top go bankrupt yet :D

I did find a specialist 2.5 hours away. I would go that far if necessary. I even asked my old vet if he would consider doing video consults...we'll see. I have a petvet who is experienced with exotics and he's pretty good, but doesn't have a lot of years under his belt. Heck, last week he called me about care for a wild bunny.
As for fundage...I tell my husband I invest less in my wild babies per year than what he does in his golfing. He's a good sport.

Hey Jamani96.... the newbies just keep FLYING in.... [hehe a little ok-little :shakehead flyer joke there.] :D :Welcome

I'm new myself, so don't take offense if I tell a newbie joke here and there.

I lived in Charleston for 8 yrs. and may be planning a move back to the south eastern part of the U.S. again. It's a gorgeous area.

SC, of course you know, being legal for squirrel/human cohabitation, is one of only two legal states in the US, [Florida being the other]. Hopefully that will help for your search in other specialty vet care, unlike the illegal states, that are, as Seinfeld's 'squirrel nazi' would put it...'no VET for you!':crazy :crazy :crazy

Welcome fellow squirrel lovin' newbie....mjs :grouphug :Love_Icon
