View Full Version : Wizard needs URGENT help TSB

TSB little Wizard needs your help.

I got a call to pick up an injured baby some time back after a storm took down his tree. Wizard was found next to his downed nest laying on his back. We have not regained any use of his back legs or tail.

About 10 days ago we noticed the end of his tail was starting to get hard and 3 days ago about 4" just broke off. He also had a couple of toes trying to get infected. This morning the ends of 2 toes were gone and another one not looking good.

Wizard is a happy, bright, energetic youngster. Always a busybody wanting to see everything going on around him. I love Wizard and he loves life.

We have been consulting with a couple of different surgeons willing to work on him. But we have to be sure of his condition first. He needs to go to Dr. Dan's for tests ASAP before he goes septic (Dr D is the closest squirrel vet).

If amputation will save his life he will have a forever home with me. Vet help is available.

Wizard needs gas money and doctor funds. And lots of prayers.

We hate to ask but he will die if we don't go VERY soon. Can you please help us? You can see pictures and videos of him here

Thank you all,

What is your paypal? I can only donate a very small amount, as I'm in a very difficult financial situation as well, but hopefully it will act to get the ball rolling and every little bit helps, right?

I will have little Wizard and yourself in my thoughts and prayers :grouphug

Oh lilidukes! I just watched one of the videos. What a boy you have there. I see what you mean by him being happy and energetic.

I will be honest, I can't help much. I am trying to see what I can do to send some to my cousin and his wife who lost everything in the tornado but, I can send something. Please, everyone, watch the video of him on lilidukes link. I watched video #5 with him on the bed. Heartbreaking yet heartwarming at the same time.

Lili, what are we talking here? How much do you estimate you need for gas? What is the estimate for the vet bill? I think it helps to have an idea of what the goal is.

Do you have Paypal to send to? I will commit to sending you $50. I wish I could do more but I will be a cheerleader for your beautiful Wizard.

Michele,

:thankyou I'm having a hard time with the tears today. Words are getting difficult for me. Not sure what the total cost is going to run gas alone will be 100-150$ dam SUV. Dr Dan will run in excess of $400 and we might still have to get Wizard to another surgeon.

I am so very sorry about your family loses:Love_Icon :grouphug :grouphug

I know we can do this! Please try to keep us informed with what you have collected. I say this because sometimes if people see what you have and what you need, they can see where their $5, $10, $20 really helps. Ten people giving $10 is $100 closer to your goal.

I know what you mean about the SUV. I have a Tahoe. It is a 2002 model. New it was getting about 18 - 20 mpg. Now it has been 13 to 15 mpg. Yikes. But, I don't drive much but when I do, I need the big space as I have all the back seats either folded down or removed so that I can use it like a pick up truck. Go to the feed store and buy ten 50 lb bags of feed, haul bales of hay in it, go to Costco and stock up on everything, carry big dogs (Rotties) and cats to the vet etc.

Kisses for wizard.

I was able to meet sweet Wizard personally, and he is absolutely adorable! He acts so happy and climbs all over his cage like a little monkey! :)

I've seen what Lilidukes and her family do for these precious animals-and it's obvious that she LOVES ALL OF THEM and takes SUCH GOOD CARE OF THEM! She's also willing to help others in need, and I am SO THANKFUL!

Anyone and everyone who can help, please do! :thankyou :thankyou

Lilidukes-I was only able to donate a small amount, but my heart pours out to you and if I had more I would send it! Let me know if you need me to come and volunteer my time! That I can do. :)

Luv and prayers to you, your family, and sweet Wizard!

Yes. If you want a raffle ticket for the carrier, send $10.00 for each ticket and write "Raffle" in the area for notes. If you just want to send a donation (no raffle ticket), put "Donation."

ONLY FOUR TICKETS LEFT!

Yes! If paypal catches on they will shut it down. Put Wizard/Carrier in the notes. That should cover it & tell Leigh what it's for. :thumbsup

wizards update as soon as lili catches up..
i did speak with doctor dan, no necrotic tissue, when he debrided, the beautiful blood flowed, we like that...
lili had started abs a few days ago, thinking that saved his life...
no xrays were needed, we know he has a broken back, so why charge for something we cannot change or fix...i love a vet that doesn't wring ya out...no blood work either...heart sounded strong.. dr dan pulled off the toes and started wizard on an anti biotic targeted at bone infection as a preventative. moisture may have been culprit , condensation from heating pad may have helped start the infection, daly baths are a must on these guys, so dryness is key. doc recommended nuetering for the drag reasons..
wizards outcome appears wonderful...
doc told us he had to be seen last night, he was leaving town... so that was the urgency in his late night visit... nice man..:bowdown :Love_Icon
hope this tid bit helps!!!!!:)

Sorry we didn't get back until 7:30 this morning and had to feed starving babies.

Please bare with me I'm exhausted.

Dr Dan is a squirrel angel :thumbsup He started off with the tail removed the scab and got blood.:wahoo This is a really good thing because what is left of the tail has healthy looking blood. Spent a lot of time listening to Wizard's heart and lungs. He feels sure that there is nothing wrong with his heart and he is not throwing blood clots. Dr D opted not to do x-rays after checking the spine and pelvis area. What breaks there were have healed and they are what they are.

We moved on to his feet and toes. Two toes on one foot the nails and the tips are gone Dr D using his fingers just pulled another nail off and in doing so he got more blood and saw tendon. Is his foot and tail slowly dying??? Possibly. I had put him on Metro at the first sign of swelling. It held off a major infection and Wizard is now on Chloramphenicol Palm hoping this will keep any infection away from his bones. Also using Meloxicam (Metacam) for swelling and blood thinning. And Silver Sulfadiazine for the open and raw areas.

After meeting Wizard who by the way was on his best behavior last night decided that Wizard would do better at home. Warning me that any flare up of the infection and we have to return asap. Getting all infection under control is priority right now. Wants to run tests on him after this clears up. We are not totally out of the woods yet but we do know he has not gone septic. Our greatest fear.

Wizard was so happy to be home this morning and had to run circles around the room before settling into his cage for breakfast. Right now he is curled up with his stuffie and a pecan. Rough night for a little guy who has no idea he is disabled.

I want to thank everyone for their generosity and for coming to Wizard's aid so quickly. I will update more after a nap.

There are still 4 tickets toward the second carrier. We'll have to figure out what to do about that.

Wizard and I thank each and every one of you here at TSB for all you have done for him.

Wizard has had a Wizard day being overly curious and a busybody. We just had a fuss over him taking his meds he says no and I have to win. He really loves apple so soon as the meds go down I give him a little chunk.

The tail today looks icky but it is not forming a thick scab again. The toe nubs are not nearly as red as what they were this morning. And the swelling is starting to go down.

Working on trying to figure out a cage or design a cage to suit him. Wire cloth is so rough and a regular cage his little legs slip through. He wants to and loves to climb and since his spinal break(s) are healed I hate to deny him the pleasure.

I want to give him the opportunity to try to be as much a squirrel as he can be. I could put him in a large aquarium basically a glass house to protect him but he is so free spirited I would rather take a chance with him climbing than to break his beautiful happy spirit.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

TSB you rock:alright.gif :alright.gif :alright.gif :alright.gif :alright.gif

Sorry I wasn't here much today to update but I was so tired and trying to get all of my other kids and cages taken care of. Thinking of moving my three biggest babies to the release cage tomorrow. They have stopped taking straight FV and are now happy with yogurt with FV mixed in.

Hate to promise pics tomorrow but I will try.

The toe swelling is way down this morning and most of the redness is gone. His tail is starting to heal very nicely without a lot of scabbing. But it is hardening up some like the end did before. We may lose the tail yet.:sanp3

Have you tried coated wire? I know alot of feed stores down by me carry it or you can get it by the large roll at bass equipment. I use it instead of just plan wire mesh as it is softer and alot easier on the little extremities. Some people have had issues with them chewing the rubber off but mine have never done it and have always prefered these cages to the regular wire I had when I first started and as emergency cages.
