I have a male squirrel that is 7 weeks old "Marven" and he (along with his 2 brothers) just started to chew on hhb and thats when I noticed that his lower bottom teeth had grown all the way up to his upper gums leaving them a little inflamed and making it slightly impossible for him to eat solid food or gnaw on the hhb.
I placed an order for more fv and some bach rescue remedy and I have read the full page article on teeth trimming to prepare myself for trimming his bottom teeth once the back remedy arrives no later than Wednesday..... but while I wait I would like to hear from others that have done this procedure regarding any advice, suggestions or problems they may have come across.
Any special tools you would recommended?

Whoa.................7 weeks needing teeth trimming?
Please slow down and consult with someone who is well versed in teeth issues. I can and do trim but I am not one to give advice at this time.

Well, he is closer to 2 months (8 weeks) - but yes he does need his teeth trimmed already.
Thats why I am here.... to learn as much as I can before the BIG DAY. :thumbsup :thumbsup

I am not doubting what you see in his mouth. I am simply asking a question, as I have 5 that are the same age as yours, and they are starting to nibble, smear, bite, and shred foods.
Are his top teeth in? Some of mine have more top teeth than others. Is it possible that with your little guy biting/chewing on HHB's that the top of his mouth got rubbed raw and then swelled and now it appears that his teeth are touching the top of his mouth?
Like I said, I am not doubting what you say you are seeing. I am just asking the question because of what I see mine doing.
And I do have an NR that has a malocclusion and she gets her teeth trimmed every other week.

Can you post some pictuers so our teath experts can see what your seeing? That seames very young to need this done. It would be best to take him to a vet or some one who knows what they are doing. Let them show you the first few times. Teath split and crack if not done propley. That can mess up a healthy Squirrel so fast! :shakehead Hang in there.

I encourage you to have someone with experience help you and guide you.
It IS a learning experience but one that you should have face to face for best resulsts.
It can cause terrible consequences if you crack a tooth in the process.
My Trixie also had to be trimmed from about that age, 7-8 weeks old.
She has needed a trim every 2 weeks since that day.
Today I have a wonderful vet do it with a dremel (no sedation) and I am so blessed not to have to clip or sedate her.

When your vet uses the Dremel, does he/she use the cutting blade or the grinding blade? I am NOT thinking about doing this myself with Ellie. However, I just bought a Dremel for my dogs nails and I have been reading the manual on how to use it. I would imagine that the friction from the grinding would create an an incredible amount of heat, especially with the rpms coming out of that thing. So, now I am a little concerned about using it on her nails...need to do more reading. But the cutting blade would scare the living bejesus out of me. One small slip or twitch and ooops there goes a toe! Guess I should have done more research before I spent $75.00 on the Dremel with the puppy paw prints on it!

He grinds them.
I've never actually watched him do it, he takes her in the back but I can hear it going.
It takes him about 10 minutes I'd say.
He is a true squirrel-whisperer...gets her into a calm meditative state first...and she stays relaxed even after he's done.
When we get home she hops in her cage like nothing happened.
I still can't believe it....I think he may be hypnotizing her. :rotfl
She is 8 months old and not a super-tame squirrel...friendly and not aggressive,
but I can't even just pick her up and hold her for the fun of it -
just for "business" purposes and she does not care to be held down long.
I'm not that familiar with the tools, but I don't think they would recommend using the dog grooming ones for teeth.
I think the ones to use for teeth are quite expensive.

Thanks for the info. Heavens no, I would not dream of using this thing on Ellie's teeth or nails. It is for the dog (Kylie) only.

I have a 10 to 12 week old male squirrel I took in about 10 days ago - he is needing a cage mate and I hear you have a single squirrel that is needing a friend...... :thumbsup

Thanks for asking..... but I started to worry about him having possible teeth issue a week or two prior to him chewing on the hhb (or any thing for that matter) - but I have to say it was the event of watching him try to chew on the hhb, with out success, that made me want to look further into the matter of his teeth. His brothers have tried and eaten a little chopped apples, mushrooms, walnuts and hhb - where as poor little Maren has yet to be able to get a piece in his mouth, he is still 100% FV.
I am hoping this teeth trimming will be a one or two time thing and then with him being older he will start to chew more often after getting his teeth trimmed and be able to keep his own teeth trimmed down.
ATM his bottom teeth over overlapping his front teeth..... PICS to follow soon.
:thankyou

my eyes are getting older:sanp3 ...
is that an ulcer on his upper lip...it appears there is an overbite, but I really can't see well enough.
I am home for the endurance...come on if you need to:thumbsup
I do have a singleton 7-8 weeks...Twiggs:Love_Icon
He is small and timid.
I'm thinking a 12 week old is too big for a cage mate....not sure he would do well with a big guy.:thinking
He is still in a small hamster cage...
Mpetys may have some babies his age, but not sure. She is closer to you also, northeast Tampa.

Marven is the Jolly Green Giant compared to His Brother Chester..... :)

It almost look like he has a hairLip.I too have noticed the hairlip and it has me concerned, as it did not come about until after the swelling showed up. We will see what Jackie has to say about it tomorrow when she gets to see my little Marven in person... praying it all goes away after all his mouth issue is taken care of and heals in time.

You are about to learn from a wonderful teacher. I trim Christine's teeth every 4-6 weeks & Jackie had the tools & the patience to show me how.
It did take several trips because I was so nervous, but Christine & I do pretty well these days thanks to Aunt Jackie. :bowdown

Just got home from Jackie's house (loved visiting with Jackie and seeing Squirrel Center for the 1st time) - :thumbsup :thumbsup
Marven got his teeth trimmed and it was confirmed, by Jackie, that my little boy does indeed have Malocclusion and while he does not have Downs Syndrome he does have some thing going on in that area, therefore, Marven will forever remain with Me - Spoiled & Loved!! :Love_Icon
I also got to meet Jodie (ScoopySnack) - she was dropping a flyer off for Jackie and a handsome grey squirrel for me to bring back home and do a soft release on with the two squirrels I just placed out side a few days ago...... Edward & Bella.
Today was a Wonderful Day - :D :thumbsup :D
