I do it every week or so.
just remove the whitish tip and you should be good to go.
I use sharp toenail trimmers.

I will not trim them, they need them to learn to climb, jump and hang.
Being a squammy means pee, poop and scratches that sting in the shower.

Removing the needle sharp tip still leaves a substantial portion of claw.
I only trim their nails when they are already climbing and scooting about
Do NOT trim an animal that goes outside EVER

Lildukes is right.
I never trim them. :nono They need to learn to clim. Yours are so young right now.
That is there security not to fall. If they happen to fall. Usually they will just reach out and grab on. :thumbsup3
Now when they are much older and jumping on you like a spring board. (Age 5 to 6 months.)
If you are sure they are not going to be released. Then trim a little off. The only thing in 2 days they are sharp again. :D

I have seen on some older threads on this forum that some members provide toys that have like a sandpaper material on them. I think they're made for birds. This way they can wear off that sharp little hook. I have never tried it myself so I have no idea if it works or not, but maybe something to try. I have just gotten used to looking like I've been mauled by an angry cat :D

I was thinking about trying to put a piece of sandpaper around some of Stubby's branches just to see if it would wear the tip off a little, just for a little while. Or maybe across one of his shelves. I forgot to put on pants last night while I was cleaning out his cage and resecuring branches and let him out to play. My legs looked like I had been slashed over and over with a knife. My husband freaked out there was so much blood. It felt like needles every time he would crawl up and down, around, etc. I love him but it was very painful.

My 10 month old girl got her nail tips (literally the tips) trimmed for the first time bc I thought her nails were overgrown. It was afterwards that I felt bad bc she couldn't climb. Now that they have kinda grown out some and getting a bit sharp again she is climbing fine. The scratches I am used to, though it was nice to not get scratched. I don't know that I'll be doing it again though bc I don't want her to get hurt. And especially with your young ones, they need to learn to climb if they'll be released. I would layer on some sweatshirts. Good luck!

I trimmed Hazel's nails a few months ago. I spent the next few weeks scared to death that she was going to fall and break her neck. Right after I trimmed them she tried to jump from the back of my chair to my shoulder for a ride along. She slipped off and almost fell. Fortunately I caught her and put on a sweater that she could get a hold of. I think that I will live with the scratches in the future.

I saw on ebay a wodent wheel with the sand paper inserts that can be replaced. If I get a baby and add the sand paper around 4 mos. old or so would that be ok for a chipmunk? and 11inch size for the wheel?
