I have been taking care of him for 2 weeks and he has been doing fine till this morning. He is now clicking and I need to know if I can give him some human amoxicillin oral supsension? It is 400mg/5ml....

This is NOT the antibiotic of choice, but it worked for me! if it is the only thing you can possibly get, it is better then nothing. I believe it will kill the bacteria, but can cause diareah.
Is this in liquid form? Going to try and do some calculations. You can post me privately if you like

OK, I searched the dosage for infants. I broke it down for a 100 gram squirrel. You really need a good weight on your squirrel first. Based on 100 gram squirrel, you would give 1mg of amox. With the dose that you have at home, if you filled a 1cc syring to the 1cc line ( full), then you would have 100 doses in there for your squirrel! Here is what I would do. Take that 1cc of your amox liquid and add 5 more cc of water. maybe in a shot glass you could mix it. Now you could give .1cc of that at that dilution .1cc is one of the ten lines on the 1cc feeding syring. This way with it diluted, at least you can give a little more volume. easier to see in the syringe. If the squirrel is not eager to eat, you will have to drip it in the mouth slowly and be sure they are licking it up. If this is too much liquid due to the squirrel not feeling well, then do not dilute it at all and give.01 of the full dose liquid. This would be one of the 100 tiny lines in the 1cc syringe. This way you would only have to wet the tounge of the squirrel with it, the dose is so small!
All the rehabbers strongly recommend baytril, but if you have nothing else, it is worth a try. Maybe contact a rehabber in your area?
My squirrel bounced back after a few doses of this amox. Maybe one dose now to save its life and then get some Baytril? I would not mess around. They die easliy. Best of luck and keep us posted.

I just went through this with my little girl around the same age. I was told Amox would be okay if nothing better was available but that Baytril is the best. It helped Ollie. Is there no way for you to get any?

is it liquid or tablet, if you lived closer I could give a dose of batryl. Our dosage chart for Amoxidrops is: 10-20mg/kg PO BID. When we mix batryl, we mic 1cc batryl (the injectable) to 10cc grenadine syrup, then dose based on weight. We need his weight to help with dosing further.

Thank you soooo much. I gave him a dose so we will see what happens! I will ask around and see if I can find the other med. If I cannot how often should I treat with the amox.?

Amoc is pretty tough on the gut flora - I would in the very least start adding yogurt to the formula, or better, add benebac to the formula.

wonder how this little one is after a dose of Amox? This dose should be given 12 hours apart. twice daily. I would add a tiny bit of yogurt to the formula.
When my girl was clicking, I saw her back on her feet after 6 hours of the first dose. because Amox is so hard on the tummy, I treated her for a shorter time than recomended, but watched her closely. She was on meds for four days and was all set.

Give me the weight and the strength MG/ML and I will calculate the dose ...give for 7 days every 12 hrs (twice a day).
MUST GIVE A PROBIOTIC

He is still clicking and he doesn't have much of a desire to eat but he is getting up and moving around at times. He has fecal matter on him and hollars and yells when I try to remove it. Any tips on that one?

I would try soaking the area with a warm washcloth. Also, if you are close to Wichita, I can PM you with the names of vets that will see squirrels.

Keep dosing it, twice a day, for 7-10 days. Watch out for the diarrhea--get the benebac like others have said [I think it's at petsmart and such]. Yogurt isn't really strong enough.
Good luck. Please remember, pneumonia kills pretty easily. Even if they seem to be doing better. Be vigilant.

She has been up and moving around a lot more and has been eating well. Only thing is that she continues to aspirate during the begining of her feeding. I have tried several different syringes and even when formula is only given a drop at a time she takes in and a bubble comes out her nose. I am so stressed about how to stop this from happening. Please tell me what I am doing wrong...

Some babies are like that; if it makes you feel any better I've got one too (Luther). He is 5 weeks and JUST stopped spluttering and trying to drown himself in the past couple of days....and I've been doing this for years :shakehead
Tips to try:
Angle the syringe upward toward ONE SIDE of her mouth. Once you've got it under her muzzle hold back and only allow a drop at a time to go in.
As soon as she splutters, withdraw the syringe immediately and let her sneeze it out.
Take her back end and tip her up like a wheelbarrow -- helps the formula to run back out her nose, and not into her lungs.
Good luck -- I feel your pain! :)
