I believe Jackie fed some and Sara ended up really sick for a number of days.

So I have never tried to feed it to my squirrels.

Once there's a report of a food causing a squirrel to vomit and we're pretty sure it was caused by that food, plus the food does contain a substance that causes problems for some animals, it gets tossed off the "Safe Foods" list. Doesn't mean that food is toxic or even harmful. We just wanted the "Safe" list to be as safe as possible. You can call it an abundance of caution.

Squirrels have pretty tough digestive systems; they can eat a wide variety of foods, including some that would make other species sick. So when a squirrel upchucks, it kind of gets our attention.

If you do feed the eggplant, let us know what happens.

I did some research for Ramamama about this. The toxin is called solanane and is also what is in raw potatoes - especially in the green layer directly under the skin. Some individuals are quite sensitive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanaceae

The greatest quantities are in and just below the skin, and in fruit that are not ripe. So theoretically, the middle of a very ripe eggplant may be okay.

But with so many other perfectly healthy, non-toxic things available, why bother with marginal things?

Eggplant is in the deadly nightshade family but then again so are tomatoes.

I concur CrM with so many other palatable choices why tempt fate?
