If you're trying to re-unite with mom, you should not feed it
alex39

but I will need to feed if she dont come before the sun is down ....

I already have a 9 month squirrel in my living room I will try to save this one but I wont be able to keep him for long because I might start working any day now.
I'm in Montreal so if anyone know someone...

What a cutie! I would say that s/he is just shy of 3 weeks. I just spoke with Alex and Mitch (both of you are francophones, btw), and we are working out a plan for the wee one.
I advised Alex to
1) do the tent test for dehydration,
2) if mildly dehydrated feed half strength formula every 4 hours - aiming for 3 - 5 ccs per feeding, but, at minimum, 1.5 ccs per feeding. And if the kit is not dehydrated I suggested to feed regular strength formula. He has some fox valley left over from taking care of Daisy. I also gave him some pointers for feeding one so tiny as this one is. Daisy was older when she came to him.
3) put the baby out where s/he was found about an hour after dawn tomorrow. Hopefully the mom will come looking. Since, as we can see in the pics, the baby is not horribly dehydrated, s/he may well have a worried and searching mom. I told him that feeding and handling is ok, to the best of my knowledge, but that the kit must be warm when put out for mom or she may leave it thinking that it is already dead.
Tomorrow we are supposed to have rain. How does that affect family reunions? Anyone?
4) Provided that the kit turns out to be an orphan and looks likely to survive, Mitch would like to make a squirrel family with Hansel. That's the best choice for both of them since they will be happier as they grow up. If mom does not come to take the kit this weekend, I will take him/her until Mitch is ready and we are sure that s/he is out of the woods. We don't want to traumatise Hansel again by giving him another sib that passes away :(
If I missed anything crucial to the little ones well being and future in that, please feel free to speak up! I will make sure that the info gets passed along. I just gave Alex the best advice that I can with the knowledge that I have. Both Alex and Mitch are pretty busy with other stuff, so I am happy to be in the middle for them :)

Your baby is soooo adorable Alex. I would love to give Hansel a buddy to grow up with. As Kristal must have explained to you there's a lot going on here on the homefront at the moment - on top of having found Hansel - so I just want to make sure I don't take on more than I can chew... for everyone's sake, especially the babies and I don't want to traumatize poor little Hansel again.
I do hope that mom comes back for your little guy. Let's keep praying. Make sure he can stay warm out there tomorrow morning - might be nippy that early in the morning. Maybe place a rice buddy next to him? You also want to make sure he is sheltered from the rain.
Good luck for tonite, you and this sweetie are both in my prayers.

And Alex, check your answering machine for the feeding instructions. I remembered that just after I talked with you.
Basically you make a wide, upside-down "V" shape with the tiny ones. You hold the kit up at an angle in one hand and feed with the syringe at a downward angle so that the plunger is at the bottom. You do this to work with gravity and thereby allow the kit to have more control over how much is swallowed at a time. It helps to prevent choking and aspiration.:thumbsup
Don't worry if the kit does not eat as much as you want, also. It's no big deal, and s/he is going to have problems with the syringe at first, anyway. It's more important not to force it than it is to get optimal food amounts into the squee, at this point. So long as s/he does not get dehydrated, that is enough for the first couple of days. Wait for the baby to open up its mouth and take the syringe before pushing in any formula. :Love_Icon

Bingo! In other words, basically you are sending the formula up towards the baby's mouth... SLOWLY, one drop at a time! :D

I didn't forget to feed him V upside down and he has a heating pad I bought from fox valley guy as well as some rice bag. I will be checking tomorrow morning for her/his mom. He is dehydrated so I added twice water to his fv. Will post updates and pictures (camera batteries are dead).
Thanks everyone I will do my best to save him !

Also, for the experienced folks: If the weather tomorrow is crappy enough to prevent reunion is it likely that mom will still be looking on Sunday? Sunday is supposed to be sunny and warmish, is the thing... At what point is it too late to hope for a reunion? :dono
Also, what are some early, common or likely signs of injury? If the kit is injured is it even a good idea to try to reunite?:dono

I know one thing... The trick is to offer the liquid more like a bit at a time but often. You don't want to give too much liquid at once to a dehydrated baby. During dehydration the organs go in to near shut-down mode... so hi entire little system needs time to start functioning into full mode and be able to digest, pee & poop again. Patience is the key. :)

Depending what the injury is. If it is life threatening then no. If it is only a scratch then yes.
I have never heard whether you should feed a baby or not if trying to reunite but I would think yes. Dehydration for the baby is dangerous. Th mother knows the scent of her own baby.
Good luck with him. He is a cutie.
You were asking if there were someone because you were going back to work soon. I can take him but I am in Toronto area.

Well he is still alive. Eating a little bit. Seems less dehydrated. But he is a bit hurt on the nose for sure. I didn't see mom today its a rainy day and the peanuts I left outdoor didn't move.

Just saw what I think is her mom. I placed the box near the peanuts. Twice she went for the peanuts and ignored the baby. hmmm ?

It was intense because she was handling him like a little ball turning him around and around. I was not sure if she was the mother or just another squirrel trying to eat it. She took a pause twice on her way to the tree and turned him again like a rolling ball with her hand and teeth. That's when I was going crazy not sure if she was eating him or just handling him to get a good grip. I was ready to scare her away and take the damaged baby back but then she took the little ball up the tree and in a hole. Then she went back down the tree going toward me. I entered quickly my house in fear of retaliation (maybe she thought I had steal her baby). Anyone knows if she can attack me ? lol

Awww, alex39, you're not just a hero to that baby and his momma, you're a hero to me! I always have such guilt at my joy of having babies that I have to remind myself that this joy is the result of something happenng to momma leaving baby to be an orphan or perhaps due to baby sustaining injuries. Your taking care of this baby until it could be reunited with momma is just so beautiful. What a wonderful sight that must have been to watch momma come get her baby. You rock!

No, I think that was definitely the mom. That she didn't even touch your peanuts all day means that she was upset enough to not even be thinking of food. Peanuts are like crack for squirrels, normally.
It seems likely that she was off on an extended forage that kept her out all night because she got too far, and grey squirrels won't travel at night. There is almost no food right now because we had such a brutal and long winter, and nursing kits would put heavy nutritional demands on her body.
The kit (it's a boy, btw) must have gotten a bit dehydrated in her absence and gone looking, blindly, for her. It's great that you were there to help because that little guy would probably have been cat food, otherwise. :thumbsup I'm so glad to know that he is warm and safe with his mom just as he should be :Love_Icon It's a wonderful ending to the little story :)
I saw a funny video of a squirrel mom transporting a kit that is almost as big as she is the other day, btw:

It looks almost like the kit is hurt, but you can see at the end that they are both just fine :Love_Icon

Keep an eye on her in case something is wrong. Hopefully mom will take her (yes, her) in again - But if she's ill or injured, mom may have booted her out this time. What is the weather like there?

It is cloudy... You can tell by the picture its a female ? and the mother got it again as I was going to take it. I don't want to get attacked either !

Yes - Its a female :) The genitals would be higher up the belly on a male and there would be a little sac beneath the penis. Definitely a girl. Keep an eye on the nest and check on a regular basis - I wonder why it keeps falling?

No formula if dehydrated that can make it worse...use electrolytes for the fist 2 feedings 2 hours or less apart if not taking in anything.
Ramp up the formula to water dilution by 25% every other feeding...Formula is hard on little tummys
also add a dab of yogurt
and NEVER FEED A COLD BABY!

Hi there,
How is the baby doing? Are you still looking for someone to raise it? I'm willing but I seem to not bring much luck to the one that need help and come my way.
