I received a 5day old cottontail yesterday that is in very bad shape.
One of its hind legs is broken and turned around completely backwards.
It has a laceration across its stomach and I think its stomach has ripped through the abdominal wall.
Every time I feed it the bunny's lower abdomen blows up like a balloon.
It was in triage at the rehab facility for 2day and in my care for 1 so I know that whats going into its stomach isn't leaking into the rest of its little body or it would be dead already.
I know the odds of it living are very small and that even if it does I will never be able to release it into the wild.
Needing advice desperately I have never seen anything like this where the baby has lived more than a few hours.
Please if you have any knowledge in this kind of injury or any suggestions let me know.
Its not crying its very calm and seems to be getting around pretty good considering.
I'm sending Squirrels and Bunnies a pm to see what she thinks.

Poor bunny!

This is a tough one - even if you are able to keep her alive with that distorted of back leg she would never be releaseable. It is actually amazing that it could be broken and displaced that badly and not be a open fracture. Without an X-ray there isn't any good way to realign the leg to allow the fracture to heal - if she was a little older and you were willing to keep her long term you might be able to amputate the leg. Otherwise I am not sure there is a ideal solution. I know it is a bad word on this Board, but euthanasia may be a reasonable option in this case!

I have considered it. I'm not one to rush to that decision. Honestly I'm amazed that she has lived this long when most bunnies with a few scratches keel over within the first 24hrs. Currently I(m more worried about her stomach issue than the leg. If she lives though this I will have it amputated. I dont think there is any saving it. I'm going to try to feed her lesser amounts more frequently. I'm truly stumped. I dont know what to think. Shes definitely a fighter. Going to keep praying for her.:grouphug

I think the stomach problem will eventually kill him :sad. I had one last year that had been hit by a lawnmower and didn't have visible cuts or anything but had a large swelling on his belly. He lived for 3 weeks, but the lump never went away and one day I went out and he had severe diarrhea and was not OK. His siblings were all fine, no diarrhea, so I am pretty sure it was the injury catching up to him.

The leg will need to be amputated if you keep him, which means he'll be nonreleaseable. In the meantime, that leg is probably really painful, so he should be on Metacam or something else to deal with that.

I think euthanasia would be the kindest option :(.
