I just sent a link to the board for a friend of mine in Florida who has just gotten into some possums. She can better explain the situation. She needs help. I'm off to work so I can't stay and help or pick up babies right now, not that I have what's needed for possums anyhow.

She should be joining unless she has been able to find a rehabber on her own.

Just a heads up :D

She can't join. Keeps getting an error message. Please someone email her at

sorrelaqha@hotmail.com put possums in the subject line so she knows it's help.

Thanks. I REALLY have to go!

Ok - Can baby possums drink the Homemade GM Formula made by Jackie?
Do we have anyone near Madison County, Florida that can take the possums?

Ok - I found this thread ( http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27702&highlight=Possum ) and based off it I informed the person with the possum babies to get some Esbilac puppy formula to feed them as she was on her way out the door to get some food for them.....

Their eyes open with fur on their body and we are in NEED of someone to rehab them.... they are in Madison County, Florida

I'm not sure if they have found someone nearby.
It's best the babies get to an experienced rehabber.
The closest person I can think of that could help is probably in Jacksonville (Anne).

I can probably give some basic advice in the meantime.
The problem with opossums is that they don't suckle.
If they don't drink on their own, they have to be tube fed.

Were you able to talk to her Karen? - and has any one been able to get a hold of Anne to take the six babies to raise?

I wanna thank everyone who tried to help. Unfortunately the babies didn't make it through the night.

Hugs to all of you who responded so expediently. My deepest appreciation. On any other day I would have gone to get them. I had a very last minute booking and was literally headed out the door when I saw the post on the horse forum.

Sadly the babies did not survive the night. :shakehead

We tried...
I had contacted her last night and gave basic care instructions
and we looked for nearby rehabbers she could get to
this mornigng (Jax was too far, she was clorser to
Tallahassee or Valdosta).

I commended her for trying...
It's rare when people care enough for opossums,
they are given a bad rap and are really special critters. :flash3

It's rare in horse people especially. Possums transmit EPM which is devastating to horses. In our world they are dangerous, but many of us are general animal lovers so we save them anyhow. LOL

I just heard..... (read an email) as I was gone all day - My heart is saddened at the lost and yet proud of all the people that worked so "quickly" together trying to save these six little lives. :Love_Icon

Hello all! I am new to this forum. Very sad to hear about the 6 opossums that didn’t make it, however it was inspiring to see the way ya’ll worked together to try to help. I generally work with raising and releasing squirrels, but about a month ago I was given two female opossums that were about 2 an ½ months old. I am worried that I’m not feeding them correctly as yesterday they could hardly walk. This was a very rapid onset. I changed their diet last night and was told that they should be ok in about four days. (Possible bone density problem beginning? Will have them wormed and antibiotic given today.) But I would be more than happy to receive any and all suggestions to help further their progress. Thank you so much! (813) 764-1953 [email]jessicacloutier@live.com
