View Full Version : Saved a squirrel from my cat

2 days ago we kept my cat from devouring a squirrel and have been trying to nurse it back to health ever since. We found it in the afternoon and fed water and Pecans w/ peanut butter that night. The squirrel actually ate pretty well that night but it was very lethargic and didnt seem to have alot of motor control over its body. The next day we got a formula for feeding baby mammals that was recommended by a website, and have since been feeding a combination of water, formula, and pecans. The squirrel eats pretty well and seems to be getting healthier and more aware but still doesnt have much control over its body and it seems that the right front arm is completely disabled. There are no obvious signs of injury to the squirrel, I have even run my fingertips along the bone structure and I cant feel anything out of place. Anyways, the squirrel seems to be getting better in that it has more energy to eat and seems more aware, but it cant control its body very well almost like it has brain or spinal damage? Anyways, just trying to see if theres anything I can do to help this little guy out. It is a boy gray squirrel and i think its in the range of like 6-8wks. As far as moving it can kind of wriggle and push on its back legs some and move its right arm well, but the left arm has no movement.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated, I want to do whatever I can to get this guy better. Oh yeah, Ive been keeping it warm and I dont think pneumonia is a problem as i havent seen it choke on any liquids, or any any liquids go thru his nose or anything.:thankyou

Sending a PM.
Edit - OK, you cannot get private messages. This baby needs meds ASAP. Cat bites are bad due to the bacteria that they transmit. I'm not in the area to assist you today. Give me an idea of where you are and I'll see if I can find somebody to help you in case Junior is unavailable.

Yeah i dont know about the pics, havin a hard time with them, I guess im supposed to load them on to a photo sharing website and then link them in here?
Also now that im here in a quite room next to the little guy I do hear him making some kind of like soft grunting noises while he breathes... is this a normal squirrel sound or maybe a symptom of pneumonia? (hope not)

Im off of highway 400 north, exit 16. the breathing sounds i just mentioned seem to have stopped already and i saw him chewing on something so maybe he was just digesting a piece of pecan stuck in his throat? that was the first time i heard any breathing problem so hopefully not a big deal

So does this person want me to call them this late or should I call in the morning? Are they going to want to come here and give a shot/assessment or would i bring the squirrel there for them to take care of?

I gave him your number, Christy. He was going to call somebody this morning, so if you have not heard from him, then he must have been able to reach somebody else.

Great news! Please post an update of how the baby is doing. Sounded to me like there might have been some swelling around the neck, as he had a hard time getting a good dehydration reading.
