But Hey I did find this.....

Flying squirrels give birth to live young.
Young are born without fur or any capabilities of its own.
Their ears open at 2 to 6 days old, and fur grows in by 7 days.
Their eyes don't open until they are 24-30 days old.

SO...... that would put your baby flyers to be around 4 or 5 weeks old.

If you are referring to the squirrel in my avatar pic.... that is one of the squirrels we have successfully released, he is a FREE squirrel that came back for a visit - MAX - but we no longer see him..... he left us in search of women (female squirrels).

MAX was My 1st Squirrel every...... back in AUG 2007

As for names, I don't know if your babies are males or females... or one of each but ....how about Cesna and Piper? I mean, those being names of small kinds of airplanes it would seem fitting for flyers :D...

or how about Otto and Pilot... as in auto-pilot ;)

I wait about 2 weeks after their eyes open, unless your room is very chilly. Don't rush to shut it off -- I have had a baby get pneumonia from being taken off heat too soon. :( When you see them consistently sleeping away from the heat, you'll know it's ok.

I know oatmeal has been feed to flyers and I know sugar glider owners use rice cereal in their gliders leadbeaters mix.... but I am not sure about giving rice cereal to flyers on a regular basis - I would stick with full fat yogurt my self.

I would second this!!! Heavy cream worked really well for me. I know Nick at Fox Valley sent me some ultra boost....that worked well too.
As far as the rice cereal....mine wouldnt touch it.

A lot of times this happens due to Bloat, which happens when the baby is over feed.
Suggested treatment:
Soak in warn water, Give few drops of Infant Gas X, Hold Formula and Push Pedialyte.

Yes, for the next few feeding give him pedialyte instead of formula and some infant gas-x would help if you have some on hand.... a few drops ever hour.

Seeing a PIC would help me determine IF it is bloat or not..... can you post one?

Hmmmm - well from the look of the picture you posted and from the info you just gave me of how much he is eating and how often I really "do not" think he is bloated.... maybe just try stimulating him after he is through eating to make sure he is going potty so he does not get backed up.

If the bump seems more to the side then it may be possible that this lil guy has a small hernia. I'm ot sure what to do about those... do you have a squiurrel friendly vet? I.e. are you in a squirrel friendly state?

He may be needing more to eat than he is getting..... what you are feeding him is just enough to survive on, therefore, nothing left for waste.

Another thought that was brought to my attention..... the eye dropper may be allowing to much air to get into your little guys tummy, therefore, he maybe getting a little bloated from time to time..... you really need to look into getting a few o-ring syringes to feed him with so you have more control over what and how much goes in his tummy at one time..... CVS will usually give you one for FREE until you can order some.

rooh2011
04-04-2011, 11:36 PM
he also eats cheerios he loves them

Scooterzmom
04-04-2011, 11:36 PM
I do suggest that you get a syringe to feed him. The eyedropper allows too much air in his tummy and if you let him suck on the eyedropper then you risk aspirating him! :nono You need to have good control over the flow of the formula - you wouldn't want to risk aspirating him, would you? All it takes is one time and he could get pneumonia from that... so please, try to get a syringe and feed him very slowly.

Cheerios are ok to start him nibbling but that is not enough noursishment. At his age he needs formula most of all and rodent blocks to start nibbling on too. You can order the Henry's blocks and soak them in water to make then easier to chew at first.

ok ill go tomorrow... how old are they wen they are weaned?

GOOOOD! I'm glad to hear you'll do that for your baby :bowdown

Squirrels wean themselves. They gradually will begin rejecting the formula... sometimes they'll take it for breakfast and not the rest of the day... others will take it at night and not the rest of the day... some will just decide they don't want it anymore... some will decide they want less and less when they start eating solids. I don't know about flyers or sugar gliders but my greys all had their own way about it. They all were weaned around the age of 10 weeks, some not until they were 12 weeks old! How old is your baby?

... In any case you should still offer it for at least 3 more days after they start showing signs of not wanting ANY... they may change their mind. :) If they do reject it all the time for 3 days then you can be sure they are weaned.

You will want to offer Boo-balls and/or Henry's blocks when he is weaned. He WILL NEED THOSE! They need far more vitamins and nutrients than we think... you should start reading up on it so you can begin preparing and ordering your supplies. Check the NUTRITION STICKY - Healthy Diet for Pet Squirrels to get as much info as you can.

Rhapsody
04-04-2011, 11:49 PM
Weaning depends on the squirrels - i've had them wean themselves as early as 10 weeks old and I've had them still wanting to drink their formula 3x a day at 16 weeks old, so if they are still wanting we are still giving..... :thumbsup :thumbsup

You can get a syringe at least from the pharmacy, tell them no needles, that you are feeding a baby kitten - get some 1cc and some 3cc syringes... If at least you have the syringes it will be better. Get a few. When you hold the baby make sure you hold him UP, and that the Syringe points UP, never down. You don't want to push too much too fast.

You really need to get your supplies, rooh. You can't keep putting it off, your baby is going to get weaker and will develop problems (scabs and painful penis) from sucking on himself! Most of all you need some FV formula, it's really the only one that has all the nutrients your babies need, and you will need the rodents blocks. If you tell people what area and state you're in there may be someone who can get you some until you can get your own. I suggested that before.... As for the syringes and nipples you can order syringes and nipples online from "Chris' squirrels and more" at http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/category/1410/squirrel-and-other-animal-rehab-supplies.htm

In the meanwhile try to see if he will take some pieces of baby teething biscuits - those are not the very best but they will provide some nutrition and they do have calcium... plus he can suck on those and not risk choking. The grapes are dangerous unless you peel them! Make sure they are seedless too!

He may be refusing the formula because he is n ot feeding comfortobly with that eyedropper. He needs to be fed properly.
