I keep reading posts about squirrel pets that are allowed to roam the house. Do you just accept them pottying all over the house or are they trainable?

My girl pretty much does her business within a half hour of eating so I keep her in her cage for at least the 30 minutes after eating. That's not saying she doesn't leave nuggets in the house, it just limits them. I know where she goes, I know where she's been, cleaning up after her is easy. It's like picking up or sweeping up little black bb's and washing up an occasional pp spot. It's just all in the routine of having a fuzz butt. :dono

I don't know how "trainable" others' pet squirrels are but I had one little guy who was littler trained. It's not so much that you train them to use it, it's moe that you observe where they do it, where their favorite spot is and place the litter box there.

I noticed that Chipper (my very 1st squirrel) always used the same corner in his cage, so I took one of the paper towels on which he had peed and placed it under the litter and placed the pan in the very same area where he usually went... and voila! I never use scented litter, NO wood chips either, no sandy thing that's dusty - because inhaling that dust might be toxic for him. Yesterday's News (they're like hard pellets and quite absorbent) is what I use. 135220

I've done this with Hami also and so far he's been purty consistent about it; he very rarely will do his business anywhere else - and yes, if it does happen, it's at least easy to pick up and clean :) ... not like a St-Bernard's mess :rotfl :hidechair
