Is that normal??? should i try and splint the bad leg. should i be useing my heating pad underneath him on low? PLEASE HELP! tonight will be the second night our fuzzy guest will be sleeping over.

could you post any pics?
A bit more detail as to how mobile he is?...
can he move his back legs, front paws?...
what's his tail like: limp, moving, curling etc?...
how did you find him?... you said he was stuck somewhere?...
What do you think might have happened?...
exp.ppl will be here soon

yes he is peeing and pooping just fine! he just hid his little face beneath the towel ive left him on, at the foot of the bed. is it normal for him the not mind me touching him? he lets me feed him water by hand. and lets me pet his head lightly. oh and yes he is an adult size guy.

It can be considered ok/normal because :
a) he could be someone's released squirrel, used to human contact
b) some injured animals instinctively sense when someone is trying to help them and cooperate to the best of their ability
c) some wilds can be surprisingly trustworthy, too, although, very rare.
You mentioned you gave him a towel?... Loopy fabrics, like towels, can be dangerous because their little claws get caught up in the loops, resulting in injuries.
Do you think you could find something that's not loopy?...eg., t-shirts, fleece, even solid cotton shirts?...

front paws work very well his eyes and head movement seem sharp and alert. the right leg is hurt but he can move is slightly. sometimes he streatches it out. his tail and left leg are all limp. does the spine run up the tail? im not sure what happened. i just found him yesterday with his back legs wedged between a small metal rod and the main stalk of a bush!

oh boy! Poor little one! Must have been so terrified when stuck!
Thanks so much for rescuing him.
I don't know squirrel anatomy in detail, but tail can be affected by spinal injuries. It can be anything. He might have just pulled his left leg when stuck, he might have broken it, he might have hurt his back and that's why he got stuck... could be anything. It would be great if a vet could examine him, do x-rays, maybe... any chance for a vet?... just a trustworthy one, because I don't think squirrels are legal in your area....
Keep checking here, because most likely, there is a person or two here who might be close to you and be able to help.
For now, just keep him quiet, warm, hydrated etc.

I would definitely try to get him to a vet or someone else in your area that's experienced to get him checked out. Can u post picks of the little guy so age can be determined? Also making sure he's eating the proper diet as well as, peeing and pooping is important.

LMAO! Sorry your post made me laugh. You have a baby boy there and yes they have big balls.
Get some Esbilac puppy formula to ensure he will get the proper nutrition he needs.
Little boy squirrels are a hoot and you should have fun raising him :)

The size of the balls might be quite normal as this is about their mating season (some areas a bit earlier, other areas about now etc)
Well, corn and cashews are better not be given. Among nuts, almonds and hazelnuts are best, walnuts are good, too. Srawbrres are fine. You could also give him apple slices (no apple seeds), banana pieces, avocado slices (flesh only, skin and pit are toxic), orange, grapefruit. If grapes - peel them, Even though adult squirrels know to peel them (they don't eat the skin), just in case, to be on the safe side - peel them for him.
Of course, for a couple of days this food should be ok (but you would not feed a squirrel like that long-term - this is just for future reference ;-), in case you end up with another squirrel or a baby squirrel, who knows ;-)).
If you would like to, you are welcome to read the Nutrition section.
Try giving him veggies: cucumber pieces, zucchini, squash, broccoli, lettuce, endive etc.
Just make sure he drinks and stays hydrated. hydration is even more important than food.

I would like to respectfully suggest to hold off on Esbilac. They changed their recipe and recently Esbilac has been causing various problems with squirrels.
If you do end up with him long-term, you will need to read Nutrition section and most likely get a rodent block and/or Fox Valley formula (but if he is adult, he might not take to formula, although, some adults do, surprisingly).
But if someone ends up taking him, they will take care of that.

I am glad he does not mind you touching him. Maybe he likes you
While obviously on the other hand, he needs see vet, get x-ray done, and see what the doc got to say. Any thing that could help this guy get better...
From my point view, this definately one non-releasable. Perhaps you can get him to rehabbers or someone who would keep him as pet, since he get along fine with humans..
Bless your heart. :thankyou and :Welcome to TSB

He can eat Ensure - the nutrition drink for humans - they sell it in all drug and grocery stores. It is very high calorie and sweet, so they usually like it and it's good in a situation like this.
You can also give him infant ibuprophen. Get some INFANT formulation of ibuprophen (Motrin is one) - make sure it is the infant type - it's a liquid. He is a big boy - if you can get an accurate weight in grams if possible I can give a more accurate dose but on the low side, you can give him 0.12 cc of the infant motrin every 4 hours. That is based on a 1+ pound squirrel - he is probably biggers than that. It will help with any pain. When at the drug store, as the pharmacist for a couple of 1cc syringes, and use them to give hydration, food and meds instead of the eyedropper.
If you can make him a little nest in a smallish container out of old t-shirts or sweatshirts - fabric without loops that his nails won't get stuck in - but plenty of them so he can burrow down in them and get comfy, and put that container half on and half off of a heating pad set on low so he can seek the warmth if it feels good, both of those things will help until you can find some local assistance.
Thank you for helping him - so many would just walk by...

:Welcome Mike668 I'm so glad that you and George have found us.:thumbsup
I will not tell you that you can't not care for George because with the right help you can.
George is in need of someone that can give constant care. He needs to be in a smaller(not tiny) cage to restrict his movements No Climbing. He needs X-rays/meds and you need advice from someone with spinal/pelvis/broken bones experience.
George will have to be kept clean and DRY. No easy feat.
I can see from the video that George wants to live so lets help him to recover as much as possible. Just because he may never be able to run the trees again does not make him a candidate for euthanasia.
A word of caution be careful of vets you do not know with wildlife. I do not know your state laws. You need a vet you trust or a rehabbers vet.
For now feed him ensure warmed up vanilla or pecan flavors work great. Cut veggies into smaller pieces. And he must be kept dry and clean. A bath may become necessary. Absorbent cotton materials and/or paper towels help.
:grouphug :grouphug for you both.

the Audubon is pretty strick and may just want to euthanize, so maybe try the others first. It is possible George may heal and be able to walk again:)

Audubon in Portland WILL euthanize this squirrel. The fox squirrel is non-native to Oregon as is the eastern grey and their policy is to euthanize non-natives.
Most of the licensed rehab facilities in Oregon will only take native species.
George looks like a very sweet squirrel and could make a wonderful non-releasable pet :grouphug It's amazing how injured adult wild squirrels will take to captivity and actually love the attention. :grouphug

if they (i.e., any wildlife organization) find that an animal requires too much help and his chances for recovery are slim (ie., recovery meaning his chances to be released in the wild), they WILL euthanize him.
If there is someone who could take him, maybe, there is a way to organize a train or something?...

Just checking back to see if any word from Mike :grouphug hello squirrel People! George is doing a little better. the little guy has lots more energy today than yesterday. im still worried about his right leg and tail. still no movement in those! in the morning first thing im gunna call the number you guys gave me to call for help in Portland. the good news is that his left leg is healing very fast! im feeding him strawberry's apples and oranges. and lots of nuts and seeds. and im monitoring his food intake. he is eating lots. he is living in my bathtub because of last nights incident. when i was at the store buying George and my girlfriend some things. he climbed down my floor lenght comforter and decided to hide away underneath my bed. when i got home i was scared for George. i thought my cat had somehow managed to get into my bedroom. if that ever were to happen George would not live more than a few seconds. She is a stone cold KILLER! so i tore the place apart until i finally found him safe and sound. i went to the store today and got a water bottle. ive set it up duct taped to the bathtub eye level with George. im trying to get George to drink out of it by baiting it with peanut butter. A bath tub is very bad. Squirrels use a lot of internal energy to to help themselves heal. George needs a heat source to aid in his recovery and something soft to lay on. Cold porcelain:nono :nono :nono For water a small bowl will do or even a jar lid. Please refer to our nutrition section, he needs a diet high in calcium a lot of nuts and seeds will deplete his calcium reserves. This will lead to even more health issues.

I agree on the bath tub, oh, and please keep the toilet seat/cover down. Squirrels need lots of places to hide too, they love getting under tons of blankets, old flannel shirts, fleece whatever is soft, warm, and something that their nails don't get caught in.
Hopefully we can find somebody to help you out with your little one. There is a small window of opportunity sometimes with injuries where, if given the proper meds, they can make a full recovery.
Thank you again for taking this little one in, and helping her....there are just too many people that don't value their lives, and I am thankful that she found her way to you. :grouphug :grouphug
Yes George needs a heat source on low, and also a place to crawl off too if he gets too warm...:thumbsup So a heating pad without the automatic shut off would be ideal, and if you could put him in a cage put the heating pad under half of the cage and put the setting on low...:grouphug

Nancy is very right, with these types of injuries, there are specific meds that if given in time can help significantly, but the window of time is very small. If the meds are given later, they do not have the same effect.
This will be a very long haul for this little one to get better and he may not recover fully. One of the big issues will be, are you prepared to care for this little guy for the rest of his life if he can't recover to be released? Squirrels in captivity can live up to 15 years if given proper diet and care. It's a HUGE commitment and a LOT of expense. You'd have medical issues that require vet care and in Portland, OR, that will be a hugs challenge if not impossible unless you know the right people. Then there's caging expense, proper diet, toys, bedding and so on. Just trying to give you some information on what a big deal it is to take on a squirrel like this. It's not at all like having a cat or dog.
We all stand ready to help you, just want you to know what you're up against and the challenges ahead for both you and George. If there's anything I can do for you, please let me know. Good luck with George and give him a kiss for me. :grouphug :grouphug

I agree with Lil, a shallow bowl would be best for him at this point. A bottle would the most unnatural thing for him to drink from and you want to encourage him to drink. Once you get him drinking from a bowl, you can switch him over to a bottle if you prefer the bottle. I could never get either one of my squirrels to drink from a bottle. Both use little ceramic bowls :grouphug

I work with injured squirrels and would be very happy to assist you in any way I can or direct you to other TSB members with experience to help you and George.
My strongest best wishes for you both :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug no worries George is been in the bathtub thats true! but i forgot to tell every one he is in a comfy cat bed lined with towels. i also have the heat in the bath room turned up high. so the little fella is nice and warm!
ive been feeding him nots and seeds as well as banana bits, apple slices(with out the seeds) and orange slices. feel free to pass along any advice that comes to mind thanx. i have a question. this is day 3 of my having the little guy and his tail and right leg is still not working. there bout all limp. does his leg need some kind of a splint?

I agree with Lil, a shallow bowl would be best for him at this point. A bottle would the most unnatural thing for him to drink from and you want to encourage him to drink. Once you get him drinking from a bowl, you can switch him over to a bottle if you prefer the bottle. I could never get either one of my squirrels to drink from a bottle. Both use little ceramic bowls :grouphug
ive offered him a shallow bowl as well. every day ive put it into his kitty bed with him as well as fresh food. he has peed and pooped every day so far. i just havent seen him drink from the bowl. but i leave him to his peace and quiet because thats what i think he likes. i may not be seeing him drink. he could just be taking his water when im not stopping in to check on him. it still worries me.

Thank you Smoknbunny! If anyone can help George, I know you can :grouphug
I just spoke with Mike and gave him some needed diet info, so he's off to the store for some healthy veggies for George. For right now, George is eating, peeing and pooping and he will also have a heating pad on low underneath half of his kitty carrier. I'm hoping for an update later tonight. If I get one, I'll post it.
Thank you Mike for helping sweet George :grouphug :grouphug

You need to correct his food a bit. There is a section for healthy food. If he is eating I would rec. something with calcium and a rodent block. I use the blocks that one of the board members makes. But there are others out there for him to eat. Less fruit as it has a lot of sugar. More veggies and calcium.

Mike thank you so much for caring enough to give George all this love and affection; that little angel was so lucky you rescued him. I do hope and pray that you can get George the proper help he needs so that you can either learn how to help George rehabilitate into the wild again or... his long term care. Please keep us posted because everyone in here has a squirrel, or 60, that they love with all their heart and you will find that you will be no different from the rest of us here. To love a squirrel and receive the love from a little wild fuzzy-tail is infectious and never far from your heart. but to me Mike...It looks as though little George needs expert, medical attention and if you are worried about money I will help you with what I can send. It won't be much but sometimes ( and I have been there before ) the cost of caring for any animal is just outrageous. PM me once you have decided what route you need to take for George so I can try and help you a little bit if you need it. Peace be with you Mike and kisses and neck scratches to sweet little George.

I called Mike on my way home, but he was holding George. I asked for him to call me back. Then I talked to my contact who saw George last night. She said that George looks comfy and not terribly stressed or scared. Kinda looks like a little king laying on his bed. She took him a cage to use since he has a cat and dog and if he recovers to the extent he can crawl around when Mike's not there, he'll be protected by the confines of his cage. She gave George a shot of Dex and will probably go back in a day or two with another shot. It may be too late for the Dex to work, but it can't hurt. Mike will be be watching for signs of dehydration although my contact didn't think he was too dehydrated if at all. Mike is doing much better with the diet.
I believe another squirrel rehabber is going to take a look at George tonight to give her opinion and thoughts for care.
As soon as I hear from Mike, I'll post again :grouphug

OK, just talked to Mike. The other rehabber came by tonight and told him George was a little dehydrated. I didn't get to talk to him long, but I assume she told him how to work on that. She also showed him how to clean George to keep him from getting urine scald. I have a packet of stuff to get to him including some supplements that might help George, so I'll do that tomorrow. Mike said he thought George was doing a little better today than he did yesterday. Apparently George put his teeth on Mike's hand at one point, but didn't bite. Mike took that as George didn't like whatever Mike was doing. Mike seemed tickled that George didn't bite him but got his point across. It was pretty cute. He's being totally taken in by George, like we all do. Who can't love a little squirrel like that? I'll post as I hear more :grouphug

I just wanted to let people know George is getting the best help i can give him. He is getting lots of love.Peace/Quiet/ tomatoes/strawberries/apple bits/ hazelnuts/zucchini/mushroomes. and slices of oranges. tomorrow im gunna try and cut out most of the fruit, and go with lots of veggies. Ive had 2 house calls from 2 wonderful Squirrel saints! who will remain anonymous. ide be lost without you guys! thanx so much! and thanx to the squirrel board. ive ben washing his but and balls to avoid urine scald. via a Squirrel saints advice. the little guy is dehydrated some so ive got to try and get the electric salt fluid in him. he gets a tiny bit better each day. today when i picked him up to do one of his tummy washes. he lightly bit my finger. not in anger or fear. more like well, i dont really know why he did it. but he did not hurt me. it seemed more like licking me. That was strange! wish me luck. its time to get out of bed and offer George fluids now.
Thank you All

OH fantastic.:thumbsup im just posting to let People know how George is doing. he has more energy to day than yesterday. fyi ive fed him 6 cc's of electrolyte fluid last night. Today he had about 3 cc'd of electrolyte. Plus another 3 of honey water. he took a liking to honey water almost right away. in a few minutes im gunna try to give him more. im thinking of combining the honey water with the electrolytes. i bet thats gunna work.
he still is willing to let me handle him as long as i move slowly. there's still little change in the lower body. i think the dex is helping him. im looking forward to the day his tail works. it breaks my heart to see the little guy in pain. his breathing looks a little fast. but im no expert. well thats about it
thanx to everyone

AWWW he looks really good, and his demeanor is still so very sweet, you guys are doing great with him!
I wonder if something like this would help with the urine scald..being absorbent and all... I have never used anything like this with dogs, but I thought I would toss the idea out...maybe with his injuries he would actually be ok wearing it and not tear if off,and would keep the salve on the sore area. What do others think?

BTW, you know that those water bottles are meant to hang on the outside of the cage with the nozzle sticking in, yes? :) Then you wouldn't need the tape.

i know about hanging the bottle on the outside of the cage. but my leg kept bumping it when i walked by scaring George. so i moved it the the inside. the doggy diapers are cute as hell. but the good part about Georges tummy fur falling out is it make his urine easy to clean off his little Squirrel body. the little red bumps are much better now. im happy to report.
